My entry for Round 3 of the MOC Olympics. Category: Black and White
About this creation
Link to MOCOlympics homepage here.
Link to Adam L's homepage here.

Category: Black and White: Build a scene using black, white and shades of grey (No, not all 50 of them) to give us an "old movie" feel. Seriously, no "colors" in this one. Feel free to use old movies and TV shows as inspiration (and copy if you'd like) but the idea here is to have the picture LOOK LIKE it was taken in black and white.

In my honest opinion this has been quite a cool category to build in. I'm not sure how I managed to land a category that allowed me to use 75% of my normal MOCing bricks - but I did! I am up against Adam L, while he only has a handful of MOCs uploaded, it is very clear that Adam knows exactly what he is doing. I want to encourage you all to take a look at His builds by following the link to his homepage :)

The idea for this build came to me about half a second after I read my category (I'm not exaggerating either), I knew which elements I wanted to include and the composition with which they would make up the scene. I had a scrimmage through my Minifig draw and managed to find enough pieces to create two greyscale minifigs :) Half way through building the greyscale didn't really have too much affect on the visual appeal of this build, but as it came closer to being finished the effect grew - until now, where I think the scene looks like it came strait out of a black and white TV.

The Proposal, a time when momentarily, everyone else fades into the background, there is just you, the person in front of you, and your surroundings.

God Bless Everyone and I hope you enjoy this build. I have tried to include photos showing the insane SNOT-work used to create both the building name and the painted lines on the road. The car is the first minifig scale vehicle I have built in about 15 years. :)

A brilliant Moc. Only from gray, black and white so as to build a multifaceted Moc must paste it into the next round.

Well, that right there is SNOT work, folks. Just gorgeous. I can't begin to describe it so I'll try to condense into one sentence: beautifully done. The details here are so incredible it blows my mind. (Oops, I went over. It was worth it.)

Ouch, trans light blue tiles are painful. I was blessed to get 1000 or so of them at an incredibly cheap cost. But then I look at the prices on bricklink, and they are pushing close to $.50.

Thank you Tom. I agree, once the build was complete and the pictures were taken it blew me away how well the scene worked. It turned out exactly how I had hoped, but never thought it would. Cheers :)

Quoting Mike Johnson This is very elegant in its design and execution. I would love to see how you assembled this scene just for the chance to learn how to build something like it for myself. Magnificent, quite literally!
Thanks Mike. I might have to look into it for you, though if you stick to the 6x Greyscale colours there isn't too much that can go wrong. Balance is the most important part. Very rarely do objects convert to Black or White when in Greyscale, this is why I've kept those two colours limited on this build.

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Hey Thoy, I saw your comment on Mark's MOC, is that speed builder by any chance yourself? ;) In any case, I meant no disrespect, as I do realize that there are many builders who hands are a blur while MOCing. However, those people don't advertise their time-frames like Mark. Don't worry though, I know that you and manothers are very fast builders, I just don't know exactly how fast...
Would it help if I said this particular b&w build took me between 8-10hrs over two evenings? I'm just not sure the time taken is a relevant measure of best. Without comparison 'best' is very difficult to determine.
