Homage to Classic Space Set LL918
Aged 6, birthday money in hand I bought what I then thought to be the coolest spaceship ever: Lego LL918. Aged 38 I'm still thinking about it.

I've got the LL918 sitting next to me on a shelf right now and it still looks just as good as it did back then.

Quoting Stephan N that looks really great. And takes up one of my next MOC projects anticipated;).
I just wish I hadn't taken such shoddy photos.

That is a great tribute!! The studless build and the design give a perfect neo-classic space design. Love the details you added. Excellent work!

Very nice job. When I was little I had one LL918, now I have three ;-) I think we took the same inspiration for some re-imaginings but yours were really whilst mine sadly remain virtual. Great job, but now let's see you do the Galaxy Commander 6980 my all time favourite...

Quoting andros tempest This brought back memories. My brother had the LL497 Galaxy Explorer set and I was always a little jealous (mostly because he wouldn't let me steal the parts to make better transformers) I just had some random creator set that was all yellow and black bricks, which at the time I thought was pretty lame by comparison. I've seen some neo-classic space designs, and I think this is one of my favourites.
Thanks Andros, glad you like it, but I have to note it is a thin imitation of Peter Reid's stunning work: http://www.flickr.com/photos/legoloverman/collections/72157606905237156/

Quoting Justin M Very impressive! It's funny to see all you AFOL's thinking back on the past and remembering those memories from long ago:)
I sometimes wonder if CS is the amazing genre I believe it to be, or if it is a case of nostalgic rose tinted spectacles. It would be interesting to find out the younger builders on the site think of it.

Quoting Tim C You? Classic space? Weird. This one really takes me back. I actually owned this particular set. When I brought my childhood collection back out, the original canopy was broken beyond use. I weep. A fitting tribute. I love the improvements you made from the original, especially with the SNOT wings. Great work, David, and thanks for the nostalgia.
Not many people seemed to have this one, the bigger sets were obviously the major draw. There's a review on Bricklink that argues perfect form in this set, whereas its larger siblings are somewhat unbalanced. I tend to ageree,

Quoting Nils O. Yeah, cool! I didn't have LL 918, but it's two "big brothers" LL 924 and LL 928. That was so cool! When I first saw a picture of LL 928, I said: "I must have this one!" Well, I got LL 924 first and then for christmas - tadaa - there it was: My all-time favourite LEGO spaceship, the allmighty LL 928 Galaxy Explorer. I didn't build LL 918 until I built the whole Classic Space fleet with LDD in January :-)) ... Oh, where was I? Oh, yes, your new LL 918! Sorry, I was getting a little nostalgic... Your new interpretation of this classic model is excellent. It has the spirit of the original inside, but also a modern design. Great job! :-))
Those early sets really trigger some big emotions. It was actually Parrington's recent cs build that got me all worked up and wanting to build this - http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/343266

Quoting David Roberts Ah, happy days. This was the first ever CS set that I had and my first ever minifig too. I still have the instruction book and I suppose all of the parts. A great re-imagining.
I wanted to put the LL918 logo bricks on the sides, but somewhere over the years I've lost one of the pair - I can feel a brick link moment coming on.

LL924 was a beauty too; LL918 will always have a special place though for me, it being my first larger set.

Quoting El Barto ! Wicked! But maybe you should put the little yellow and black pieces in the wing to replicate the stripe on the original?
Nice idea, and I did think of that, but thought I'd stay true to LL918 which was the one ship in this design that didn't have the stripes; http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=918-1
