Ice Age
About this creation
Built for the MOCOlympics.
Blake Baer vs. Thoy Bradley(His Entry)
Category: "Melt Down" : HELP! It's so hot everything is melting ! The sidewalks, the buildings, the pigeons... This one may be a bit tricky
but build us a moc where everything has melted.

I wasn't very happy to see I was matched up against Thoy Bradley. My mentality with the first round was to do really well so I would have an easy opponent in Round 2. Not the case. Thoy, being the trickster that he is, naturally underplayed his talent so he would end up in the lower end of the top 64. I have for a long time been a large fan of Thoy's creations, so it is an honor/horror going toe to toe with him. He's a brilliant builder and I would've liked to have seen us both perform to our limits instead of our talents being removed by this category.

Like many of you have likely noticed, Thoy and I received a doozy of a category. In some ways it leveled the play field for us both, so it made the "match up of the century" into more of a mud puddle (pun intended).

The Build

This creation presented a ton of challenges that most people wouldn't normally catch (take note judges!). Some of the more perceptive viewers will note that the base trim is actually angled conically. This gave the tiles on the trim the ability to overlap inward. In addition to the water, the characters were also challenging, not only for their personalities and faces, but because each one's essence needed to be captured. The ice was simply difficult because all my white slopes were in piles of unsorted Rivendell.

I approached this category from the standpoint of the movie title and content. I thought the movie "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown" would give me tons of challenges and opportunity to present my skill in a fun and animated way. I may end up doing a series of animated MOCs for the MO (assuming I move on). Anyhow, for those who aren't familiar with the movie, the heroes are escaping out of the iceage because everything is melting (I think that's how it goes. I haven't seen this movie in a long time, and I don't recall being blown away by its quality either).

This creation was one of the hardest that I have ever done to date. I kept getting so frustrated with my sorting system because I was continually digging through bins to find trans blue tiles and white slopes that were in leftover Rivendell. At this point, I am glad this is done. Win or lose, I am content to see this one go.

Anyhow, thanks to you judges who selflessly sacrifice for the good of the community. I know how it feels to be in your shoes.

Best of luck Thoy! Win or lose, you're still going to be one of my favorite builders on MOCpages. It has been an honor!

Enjoy!

Sid the Sloth, one of the major characters, is known for his lishp and indefatigable personality.

Manny the Mammoth, and Diego the... Tiger.

Scrat, in his relentless pursuit of the acorn.

This shot gives a good perspective into the intense water design. Honestly, that is where the majority of the creation is. Few people in the world have had the opportunity to shade water (especially shade with trans dark blue) though my opponent is, ironically enough, among them. There were about 10 different LEGO colors used as the shading behind the trans tiles.

This shot should give some perspective on the type of base that I was working with here. The outward angle supplied a ton of tough challenges that all had to be surmounted.

Here is a picture of the brick built logo.

Ice Age: The Meltdown
...And one more for the road.

Well fellas, there she is. Awesome job on your entry, Thoy! Best of luck with the judges and God bless you, mate!
And as always, SOLI DEO GLORIA!

No need to mention that those animals - or better, the main actors - are brilliantly transformed into brick versions, but the real highlight for me is the water surface. A truly realistic piece of nature.

Sorry you didn't make it :(. Great build though! That shading on the water deserves a 99,999,999,999,999/5, and the characters are great! The acorn is genius, I've got to say. I also like how you used what looked to me like basic rock work techniques in white to produce the slab of ice. Incidentally, would you mind checking this out?: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/342495

Hi Blake, like you, I have been eliminated. I think that for both of us did not deserve to be eliminated. This your creation is truly a work of art, and I think the judges this year they are making a huge mistake to eliminate the best from MocOlympics ... I just think for friendship, not for judgments objectively right ... I am very sorry for you and for me. I am very indignant. If you can see my Round3, i would like to know your opinion. With great respect, your friend Riccardo.

It's getting to the point where I can't imagine you getting better. How can there be any more room for improvement with you technique, then you come out with something else and you blow my mind all over again. This is no exception. The shaping of the base, first off, is a feat of brilliance I don't think I've seen on this site. The characters are perfect. What has really caught my attention is the water. At first I thought everything about the base was photo editing until I got a better look at it. Your use of color on the base to achieve the illusion of the ocean is quite simply the best I've seen. The absolute best. I have to be honest, it's not always your ability with LEGO that astonishes me, (though, let's face it, there are few better in that regard), it's your abilities as an artist. Your MOCs are so artistically sound that it makes me want to see what else you're capable of. You are undoubtedly adept in other mediums. Anyhow, let me end my little dithyramb here by saying, well done, yet again, sir.

Well Blake it has truly been an honour facing you. You are without a doubt a builder who I feel speaks the same language as me through beautiful scenery. I think had we been given a more landscape oriented category your minor darkage would have been postponed for a good 10 weeks more. You really are a great bloke who does everything you can to make people around these pages feel like they should be here. I pray that where ever God does lead you, He will allow you to use those marvelous talents for blessing others, the same way we have all been blessed by seeing your amazing inspirational builds. This R3 category looks to be a lot of fun and I'd love to be able to throw ideas accross at you, Skype? God Bless mate and I look forward to the next time we are graced with one of your builds :) ~Thoy

All of your characters are amazing! (except for scrat but that's really too much to ask for for such a small guy). And I agree with Phippy, if you are going to go into a bit of a dark age then this and your MOC before this are definately great ones to temporarily leave off on.

Quoting Shannon Ocean
No worries Shannon, thanks for your comment! I know how sometimes a judge's decision rests on a blade of the subjective knife, easily falling on either side by a mere breath of wind. As for me, I'm not too terribly upset. Aside from a really hurt ego (never a bad thing!), I have been intending to recede into a dark age of sorts. Can't really say when I will be back. Thanks to all of you judges! Congrats Thoy, best of luck in Round 3 man!

Back again for another look. This could well be MOC Of The Year for me - even though it's in a category / genre I usually have little interest in. Sorry to hear you didn't progress to Round 3 of the MO - your opponent's MOC was fantastic - but if I were a judge this would have got my vote : )

  October 11, 2012
Phew, ok, judging is WAYYYYY harder than playing!! I'm sorry Blake I gave my vote to Thoy by a very thin margin. Your moc is a WORK OF ART and captures the style and fun of the movie and category perfectly but Thoy scrapes ahead because his idea came from his own imagination. Which takes nothing away from your moc, this was a very hard choice. Thank you so much for playing mate!!

yeah, the shading of course. But I mostly notice the sheer skill of PU in Sid, the basket upside down between Manny's eyes (genius!), the towering of the slices of white as the main iceberg. Scrat is not that impressive, but I'd hate to take the challenge on to make him better. Brilliance on every level, Blake! Oh, I pitty them judges on this one...

Thanks for all your comments guys! I chose to work for quality over quantity. I was hoping that my smoothness and cleanliness would contrast against Thoy's rougher style (I only say rougher because I know that he has another amazing project on the way, so a lot of his smoothing pieces are used up). Here's to hoping for a positive result from Shannon and Cody!

I think once you get to the nitty-gritty parts of the MOC, the animals let it down slightly. while they're excellent, still, they just seem a little too calm, and aren't quite realistic enough. I know how hard it would be to get them so accurate, especially with a short timeframe, but I'm not a fan of the charicters here, sorry. I love the base - excellently done! also, I love how you built the Ice Age logo!
