The legendary Kanohi Avohkii - the Mask of Light!
About this creation
My entry for Round 2 of the MOC Olympics 2012.
Stuart Lucas vs LegoBuilder JUNIOR - see his excellent entry here.
Category: "Bionicle Universe"
Build something related to Bionicles, whether it's part of the official storyline or your own fiction. You may use as much system as you want, but your creation MUST have something to do with the Bionicle universe.
The continuing saga of the Mask of Light...
Following the final defeat of Makuta Teridax, the original purpose of the Mask of Light had been completed. Under the bright sunlight of Spherus Magna, the mask gradually turned from its golden hue to a pearly white, which seemed to glow slightly from within.

Takanuva, the Toa of Light, realised that he too had fulfilled his destiny and that it was time to bequeath the mask to a new owner, who would wield the power of light to help shape the future of this new world. He found himself drawn to an idealistic young Matoran, who on donning the mask was transformed into Mikanova, the new Toa of Light!

Armed with the Avohkii and his Mors Astra staff, Mikanova's duty is clear: to protect his fellows as they build new lives on Spherus Magna, and guard the Mask until the next time it is needed to defeat the powers of shadow!

But in the short-term he has a more immediate problem - can he protect the mask from his little brother Boohu, the Toa of destructive curiosity...?

To Be continued....
Commentary: Given my miniscule Bionicle collection (exactly 1 small set), when I saw that I'd drawn this category I thought I was in big trouble. But reading the wording carefully I realised that I didn't have to build a Bionicle, just something from the Bionicle universe... so after a bit of research I decided to try and build one of the most iconic objects in the Bionicle fiction. I also thought it would be a fun challenge to make it big enough for my older son to wear.

Here's my version alongside the image I used for reference while designing the mask.

Back view: for a MOC with no moving parts, there's a lot of hinge bricks. The (now slightly warped) structure for keeping it on a child's head is also visible. It was wearable, but very heavy for a 5-year old!

At 112 studs, the staff is the longest MOC I've built to date.

Look! There's some Bionicle parts right there! In the head of the staff!

Hope you've enjoyed my entry, especially if you're a Bionicle fan! Good luck to my opponent and everyone else in the contest.

What a fantastically sculpted and easily recognizable entry. I look forward to board gaming against you, and I too am nervous, for you are always able to bring forth great builds. It should be a good round! |

Now this is what I was looking for! A non-Bionicle builder, using their system talents to create something along the unique Bionicle storyline. Spot on, good sir! You've got my vote! |

Oh Stu I love it! I'd have been in the same boat with this category and lack of parts (and knowledge too in my case!)
Everything I know I picked up from reading the Bionicle Wiki last week. That's 2 hours of my life well spent (?!) |

I really like the staff too: nice to see the Death Star being used creatively!
Thanks for starting the trend on that one! The name of the staff is a Latin pun on 'Death Star' too (that's what you get for marrying a Classicist...) |

you have my vote - i was expecting a bionicle build but seems neither of you have much or any of it. So by sticking with the theme this is the most recognizable - good luck with the other judges!
