About this creation
George G. vs David Wang in the 2012 MOCOlympics category:
"Famous historical figures: Abe Lincoln? William Wallace? Sir Edmund Percival Hillary? Who is your favorite historical figure? Give us a moc showing us your choice doing what they’re famous for."
As soon as I read my category, I knew exactly which Famous Historical Figure I wanted to do... Isambard Kingdom Brunel!
Brunel is my favourite historical figure as he was the father of the Industrial Revolution of Britain and was born ever so close to where I live :)
He was a genius inventor/engineer, whose projects never always successful but the ones that were changed the country! He constructed the Great Western Railway, built many bridges, dug loads of tunnels (including the first under-river one!)and invented lots of revolutionary steam ships.
In my model, I wanted to represent most of his feats in one scene, and I did so by creating a ship building dockyard, featuring a railway bridge. Look on and enjoy!

Brunel himself riding on his personal micro steam-paddler.

In the ship building hall 2 new steam-paddler boilers are being lowered in ready to be installed into a brand new ship.

The paddling wheels of the ship are also constructed at the yard.

Someone really should have got the chimney sweep out of the funnel before they lit the blast furnace up :P

"I" for Isambard ;) I tried to spell out "IKB" but the letter "K" was not playing along...

In the blast furnace room they're smelting some iron to form the inner sections of the paddle-steamer wheels.

The steam engine is based of Brunel's 2-2-2, "The North Star". Please take notice of the tyres used for the chimney, the C-3PO head used as a dial, the helmet used for the safety valve and the red heads and hair used for the front buffers.

"Paddle-steamer away!"

The final word:
I found it quite funny how I just finished a LEGO model depicting the life's work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, creator of the Great Western Railway, and tomorrow is the UK's largest LEGO event - The Great Western LEGO show - held in STEAM, the museum of the Great Western Railway which holds lots of Brunel's items including The North Star......
...... and I can't attend!
Good luck David!

Amazing George, I love your choice, Brunel is exactly who I would have chosen had I been in the MOC O's and got this category lol Being from Bristol Brunel played a huge part in my cities heritige. It is my dream to build the Clifton Suspension bridge one day! An amazing entry my friend and I hope to see you progress, I love your creations!
Well he was born in Portsmouth, then to Bristol :P I really wanted to build Clifton too, I'm thinking of collaboration for the GWLS for next year B) |

Wonderful details throughout. So many great and interesting things to look at. I love the compact layout you've designed and how everything is all happening at once in the same little scene. You are a real threat to most of us competing ;) but at the same time I also wish you all the best of luck and can't wait to see what produce in future rounds. |
