My modified Lego 10220 VW Camper Van
About this creation

This is my version of the Lego 10220 VW Camper Van.

I wanted to modernise it and take it from the 1960s to now..

I built this out of the box in right hand drive, I live in Australia and we drive on the left hand side of the road. It took approximately 4 hours to complete.

I have left the number plates on so that people don't think I have taken mirror image photos, I intend to make custom number plates to match what they have here.

I put new wider wheels on, just don't tell the Ferrari owner down the street, his car is on bricks!! I had to pump out the rear guards due to clearance issues, I can't drop the height of the v-dub without it rubbing against the wheel arches..

I also put on a louder exhaust, it needs to be heard as well as be seen. I might see if I can get the rims chromed, might cost a dollar or two.

The interior is standard for now, need to put a PS3 or X-box in there and a roof mounted TV..

Oh, the box on the roof.. That is a Fabuland treasure chest and the chains do hold it down. The chains have had the rail pass through them and if I turn the last link, it tensions up the chain.

I am hoping to get some real chrome pieces to bling up the v-dub, say, the door handles, the rear mirror and the exhaust too.

One last thing, Lego, can you re-release the Lego Technic figs, these vehicles cry out for a driver.

Hope you like it!!

I really want one of those Technic Figs too. My camper van has been modded too but only subtly. It has retro bumpers, accessories for the luggage rack, a step below the side doors, reworked dashboard to accept the flower vase holder, radio and colour coded, horn button, carpeted floor, larger shelf unit in the side door like the real campervan and a few other small tweaks. I tried to make it as close to the real thing as possible. The best feature is the custom Westfalia trailer I made for it.

nice subtle mods, I also built mine in right hand drive (for the uk) was going to look at some steering mods but needs a full rework of the chassis to make room for a steering rack.

I thought about steering too, but the new wheels are too big to consider that. I thought also about putting a diff & drive shaft on to turn the motor but you don't see the motor.

I'd love to see pictures of your VW, saw your trailer and it looks great. Like to see it hooked up to your Camper..
