I recently decided that I wanted to sort my LEGO pieces because it was getting near impossible to be able to easily find some parts.
About this creation
Part 1 of my sorting (sorting by color) is done! I started on Sunday, September 16, 2012 and I finished yesterday (September 20, 2012). I was thinking that it would take a lot longer that it did with school and all but it didn't!
This is what my LEGO collection looked like before I sorted it into colors. You can see why I couldn't find certain pieces that easily.
Random wing piece that doesn't fit in any bag or else it'd be in one of the bags with the white pieces
Almost all of my pieces with a sticker or have something printed on them
Minifig accessories and some specialty pieces
All shades of brown (except Old Brown)
Old Brown (pre 2004 for those of you who don't know)
Old Dark Grey
Old Light Grey
Silver (mostly Bionicle weapons)
I won't start the second part of my sorting process (sorting by part) for awhile. We're moving soon and I think it makes more sense to wait to buy the smaller storage containers that I'll need until after we move. That way I only have to move one box of LEGO pieces instead of several boxes. I have been looking for storage to see how much it will cost and I've discovered that Fred Meyers has a HUGE storage section and everything's a reasonable price. I will probably get all of my storage from there. In the mean time, between now and when we move, I plan to put together some of my old Designer/Inventor sets like Wild Collection, Wild Wind Up, and Mini Robots to name a few and build some MOCs from them only using the parts in each set. You will probably see some of those in the coming weeks.

Good work Kayla! This is about more what I have done... After building I don't sort once I tear down, And umber two I don't have bug enough bins for all my pieces! Good luck on sorting by piece!
Thanks! I plan to start that in about three weeks when Christmas break starts.

Nicely sorted! I'm one of those perfectionistic (to coin the new phrase) people that separates old brown from reddish brown too! :) Good to know I'm not the only one!
Yeah, I do that so if I want to put some of my pre-2004 sets together, all of the browns and grays will match. Separating old brown and brown and old dark gray and dark gray seems to be a lot easier than separating old light gray from light gray, but of course I do it anyway.

Nice work, sorting's no easy task! Good luck with the new house, hopefully it has plenty of room for LEGO. ;)
It will! My room's about 2 and a half times the size of the room I have now so I'm pretty excited about it. At the house I'm in now, I don't have any room for boxes of sorted LEGO, but I definitely will in my new room.
