MocOlympics-Round 1: The Pyromancer's Last Stand
About this creation

All across the kingdom of Bardavve, demonic undead coalesce from the darkest shadows. One man, The Pyromancer, stands strong against the menace. Wielding a ring of fire, he patrolled the local villages, burning back any threat. Now he faces his greatest challenge yet, the terrible Shadow Strider. With the head of a hellish insect and a giant man-like body, Shadow Striders are the most dangerous of all undead. Even the flaming ring of The Pyromancer may fail to stop it, indeed, The Pyromancer won't likely leave with his life. No longer will Bardavve be safe, no town can withstand the might of the shadowspawn.

As you probably inferred from the title, this is my 2012 MocOlympics entry. I chose the category "Ring of Fire," and interpreted it as an actual ring that grants its wielder the ability to conjure and control flames. (Perhaps even form "rings" of fire...)

The Shadow Strider. This guy was a challenge, and while he's not made of Bionicle or technic pieces it's still close enough that I grew to respect the pose-able figure building genre more.

An overhead view. Last year I really stepped up my game for the first round, and I tried to do that again this year. At 48x64 studs this is my largest MOC yet, and it was a fun challenge to complete.

It's just not a LukeClarenceVan MOC without some rockwork.

Possessed by the Shadow Strider's evil aura, a horse is the first member of the monster's soon to be massive army. On the right there's a well.

The Pyromancer realizes that he can't win, but he's determined to do his best to at least harm the demon.

I rather like this house, it was a fun experimenting with the new profile bricks.

The evil horse again.

Another building didn't fare so well. Not only was the roof scorched, but the interior has caught fire. (Good old light bricks.)

A back view.

The final shot.

Thanks for stopping by, and best of luck to all my competitors!

the scene is great, but, the concept of a giant creature attacking falls right in my alley, I d love a big scene with siege equipment a la gulliver against a giant monster, ropes, stakes, ballistas, catapults and all, hope it happens some day. awesome scene!

Cool build, Luke. The first thing that grabs my attention here is the demon. So well built. I like the black ribs, really makes this thing look evil. The pyromancer's "Ring of Fire" is also impressive. I like your take on the category. The thing that stands out the most for me is your work on the water. I like your use of those 1X1's, and the grouping of the different colors. Definitely adds a touch of realism to it. Great work and good luck in the MOCOlympics.

Quoting James Mckinnon Nice build. Is it just me or does that demon have a slight ressemblance to an enderman? I love the fire technique that you've done and it's a good take on the category. I like the first house that you've done it looks quite nice. Good luck in the MOs.
Thanks! Considering that I've no idea what an enderman is, I'll take your word for it. ;)

Quoting Chronos Omega Great entry, I like the whole thing. However, I feel that the landscape off to the side (the river and trees) feel sort of tacked on, like they don't fit there. The action draws attention away from them... maybe if you had some undead trying to cross the river, or maybe a small boat? :)
Thanks! I agree that it's a bit docile over there, but I didn't want to draw attention away from the main action.

Quoting Nick Barrett Wonderful scene. For a non-figure builder you make great figures. And; Cutest. House. Ever. See you in R2!
Thanks Nick, here's hoping. ;) Of course, if I get a low score I may be stuck facing you...

Quoting Lego Builders The photography could use some work though.
Indeed, I unfortunately didn't have access to natural light and my indoor lighting set-up isn't exactly prime. I'll have to see about building a light-box one of these days.

Sweet build - I especially like the water and that awesome little well. It'd be nice to have a couple more close-ups of your shadow demon from different angles because you've clearly used some unusual pieces in interesting ways to build it.

An amazing MOC. The beast is so skeletal and quite scary. A great bit of building, with bionicle types bits inside it. The thing that really impressed me was the landscaping. All of those different slopes, at different stud angles. Its a great effect and quite naturalistic. Great work!
