M.O. Round 1 - The Hound of the Baskervilles (LB Junior)
As soon as I saw the categories for the MocOlympics, I knew what I wanted to build. The story "The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is definitely my favorite Sherlock Holmes book.
About this creation
My entry for Round 1 in the 2012 MocOlympics.

Category: Hound Dog

"He said that there were no traces upon the ground round the body. He did not observe any. But I did - some distance off, but fresh and clear."

"Footprints?"
"Footprints."
"A man's or a woman's?"
Dr. Mortimer looked strangely at us for an instant, and his voice sank almost to a whisper as he answered:
"Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!"

This creation was something very different for me. I have never made an animal out of LEGO bricks before, but I think it turned out well for a first. It was very hard to get the right expression and cram it all into a small size. What do you think?

The blood gushing out of Hugo Baskerville's neck.

I made the hound very highly pose-able. I'm especially fond of the way the face and tail turned out. I haven't seen the technique I used for the tail anywhere else. It's the most flexible part of the whole dog. Unfortunately, the clips I used are rather rare on Bricklink, and black ones are even rarer than the gray ones; the stores I ordered from didn't have black ones, so I just had to work with what I had.

I had several ideas on how to build Hugo Baskerville and the girl. I eventually settled on miniland style figures. The girl (particularly the hair technique) is loosely based on one of my brother's Miniland Figures.

Thanks to the judges and may the best build win!

I like the beast s stance over it s victims, it looks natural, accurate from an animal in this situation, I would have used minifigs, if just for the sake of making the beast bigger and more frightening, but, minilands are more original, as we don t see them as often, and you did a fine job with them, cool scene!

Quoting Lego Builders How's your entry coming along? Mine is about 30% complete. -LB Jr.
As of last night, I think I'm about half-way there. Having said that, I've taken a fairly sideways approach to the category and I'm still not sure whether the end product is going to be worth the effort!! At least I'm fairly confident that we won't be building the same thing this time...

Quoting Stuart Lucas Who'd have thought it - we built the same theme in Round 1, then got drawn against each other in Round 2??? Just in case you haven't seen the thread yet, we've got to build something to do with the Bionicle Universe. This is going to be challenging as I've never bought any Bionicle. Judging by your homepage neither have you, so I guess that makes it a level playing field! Good luck and I'll look forward to seeing your MOC.
Strange, isn't it? My brother showed me the categories/matchups yesterday so I know our assignment. Haha it's lucky for me that you're not into Bionicle either because I've only built a Bionicle once and that was when I was 7 (if I remember correctly). Good luck. ;-)

Quoting Heath 'kik36' Flor One of my favorite stories! Excellent job on the hound and the figs! Good luck with the judges!
Thanks. I'm glad you like it.
Quoting Joshua Christenson For some reason dogs kind of scare me. But only the scary barking, sneering, and roaring kind. Nevertheless, that doesn't subtract from the awesomeness of this Moc!
Haha, I'm glad you're scared of my dog. ;-)
Quoting Annie Corder Very nice! Your hound is great. Good luck! :)
I hope I'll make it to Round 2.

Quoting Stuart Lucas I really like everything you've done here - the scene, the hound and the figures. I actually had the same idea as you for this round but based my build on a different part of the story; should be posting tomorrow! Hope we both go through to round 2!
Thank you. I have just commented on yours - it's really good. I'm sure you'll make it to Round 2.

I hated that story! Great Moc mate, and I still shake my head every time I walk past someone with two or so German Shepards or Great Danes off their leash. Neat figs also.

Quoting MortalSwordsman . Excellent build and an interesting twist on the category. Love the scene you have created here. The figures look great but the hound steals the show for me. The head on photo looks so evil, the white reflections around the mouth look fantastic. The leaping photo is also very dynamic. Good luck LBj :D
Thanks, Joe. I'm very pleased with the way the hound turned out, and I'm glad you like it too. It was hard for me to make the hound look fierce; eventually I figured out the face would need to be very angry-looking. Good luck to you too!
