SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOTTA SORT SOME BRICKS!
Well for anyone out there who was wondering what Iíve been doing for the last several months (with LEGO obviously) here you go. Needless to say sorting this many pieces was by no means enjoyable but necessary. At least the majority of the sets they came from were marked down so buying them didnít break the bank! Hopefully now when I finally build something it will be worth a ratís patoot but I guess weíll have to wait and see.
About this creation

Hereís an interesting note, for most of my life, all the LEGO I owned was contained in these whiskey bottle containers until only a couple of years ago. Coincidence? Maaaaaaaaybe!

From those four spirited tins the collection quickly grew to twenty 16 quart/15 liter bins. I decided to separate the majority into System and Technic first.

Next came sorting by color with most holding a single color while others holding a couple of similar shades.

Then I decided to use several of these smaller toolbox bins to hold some of the oddball parts.

Multi-compartment boxes proved vital to sorting all the different Technic pins and other smaller pieces which turns out to be quite a lot indeed.

Sadly, I also have a separate box for all the broken pieces too.

Most of which are socket pieces after a portion has cracked off. I still think theyíre using a lower grade of ABS but of course have no way to prove it so Iíll just rant as usual.

I even placed all of the instruction books in a bin to keep track of what I have. When I acquired multiple sets, I would write the number I bought so I wouldnít have to keep multiple copies of the same book.

Lastly we have our display center although it might be more accurate to call these builds the survivors of the LEGO apocalypse, for the moment! Actually since this was posted, the two larger mechs on the top shelf in each corner have both been scrapped for parts as well. So it goes.

It's helped so far with the time constraints of the MocOlympics. I can tell that much.

Oh the containers, of course. Sadly, I don't believe Canadian Club makes them anymore, chuckle! At least I haven't seen them in years. Besides, I had to give up the spirits to maintain the bricks budget. Tough choice I know but that's the way the coookie MOC crumbles!

Quoting Tom Simon GOOD MAN! I also would have accepted moss or weeds, but rocks is great too.
Yeah, especially when I can feel them rattling around my brain pan when a MOC simply refuses to come about in apleasing form. Yuk, yuk!

Quoting Hans Dendauw NPD Mike, I have one word for you: Craigslist; search 'lego' and 'legos'. The great thing is that people will actually list them on garage sale posts, saving the time of having to go search them all. Over half of my collection is made up from garage sales and Craigslist finds. I've scored hundreds of dollars (if not a couple thousand)worth of sets for a fraction of the cost and in shockingly good condition. Granted, I've noticed that E-bay has started to inflate the perceived value of the bricks and some people are asking WAY too much for what they have, so you may find yourself passing on many. The key is to check daily, even multiple times a day and make immediate contact if/when you find something; if you're area is anything like mine you will be competing with other locals trying to find that mega-score!~H
I'll keep that in mind my friend. Here's a tip back. If you shop at Target stores, keep an eye out for red clearence tags on the boxes. They actually tell you how much the discount is whether it be 15%, 30%, 50% or even 75% off. I've only pulled a 75% score once but 30% and 50% deals are fairly common.

Quoting El Barto ! Nicely done! I've been doing some sorting, too, not to that extent, but still...Then again, I usually find some pieces I don't even remember seeing before, so it's worth it. Now get to building, Dude!

Quoting Chris Phipson Oh how I love behind the scenes posts of collections. Looks like you had a LOT of fun sorting all that (can you detect the sarcasm in my voice here?). Personally, I just finished sorting my White Queen's castle (mostly) from Brickworld... man that was... well, you know. Looking forward to seeing where you go from here! ~ Chris.
Sarcasm, from you? Naaaaah. Perhaps I should let the overlords of the MocOlympics choose my next build, or maybe not. I haven't chosen quite yet.

Quoting Hans Dendauw NPD Ahhh yes, sorting, the bane of any LEGO collectors existence! I recently scored a HUGE garage sale deal; a lot of newer, pre-built sets that needed to be broken down for sorting, on top of my BrickWorld and Super Hero Contest builds that still needed sorting. Most of it's done now, but there are still a few of the sets that need breaking down; unfortunately, there is just too much building to do! LOL! I look forward to seeing what new projects you have in the works!~H
Really? I never see Lego at garage sales! Maybe one day I'll get lucky but until then it's discount sales galore for me. As for the next build that remains to be seen!

Quoting Parrington Levens don't you just wish you could hires someone to do that for you... Sorting is a must occasionally, but takes hours!
Yeah, or in my case every weekend over the past several months. I'm almost wishing those old containers still had some whiskey in them cause I sure could use a drink right about now! Now I find myself in the dilema of do I start building again at my own pace or do I risk my sanity once again and enter the MocOlympics? Cheers my friend!

Thanks, and it's fairly good sized now but now the new challenge is where to store it when I'm not building something. There's always something to deal with.

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Well done, that's quite the collection to sort. Now it's time for you to start post some excellent MOCs, perhaps you could enter the MocOlympics. ;)
Posting some works will happen soon enough but the MocOlympics leaves me uneasy. To be honest, I don't fare well in contests. Last time I was in the M.O. I got taken out almost immediately. That will require some serious consideration before I commit to that kind of punishment again.

Quoting Tom Simon Sorting is a required chore. I worry when I'm more motivated to sort than build. I also worry when I'm more motivated to mow the grass.
We already solved that problem. We tore out all of the grass and replaced it with rock. It really saves on the water bill too!

Quoting Cody G Nice work! The smaller spaces are very well-organized, and the larger ones are probably pretty easy to sort with.
They are finally, compared to what they used to be. Now I have to decide what to build next. Any suggestions?

Quoting Thoy Bradley This is great, its also nice to see someone else using similar sorting methods. My only change here would be to mix all the technic pins together, they are usually in large quantities and so easy to find when needed. Still, you have done well, now its sorted, its easy to maintain :) ~Thoy
A valid cosideration but I'm too much of a type "A" personality where my feeble old mind wouldn't that much mixing of pins! If I had the space and storage my supplies would even more sorted and I would have a studio akin to what I have seen in Kenney's or Kelso's postings. One can always dream.
