Finished MOC

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...(Yeah, I know it's a Star Wars reference for a Halo topic, but the phrase seems appropriate given how bloody long this project is taking!)

...I had stopped construction on the Eye of Chaos to join with MOCpages own illustrious Chris Phipson in building...this:

Of course, after displaying a creation it gets recycled, right? With Phipson that often means a very dramatic tear down involving the launching of creations temporarily into low orbit, to where they land several days later with an earth (and Lego) shattering explosion! Inevitably, my portion of Minas Tirith ended up in several garbage bags...like this:

So, now you might be asking yourself what does this have to do with the Eye of chaos ship that I've been so excruciatingly slow to produce? Ah...glad you asked. This brings me to my latest (and perhaps most pathetic) excuse for taking so long. See, once you tear down a Lego creation, you need to sort it...like this:

And yes, I'm STILL sorting! Add to that a move last winter, a huge creative slump, and the most challenging year I've ever encountered with my business (self-employed artist for those that don't know me)...and the Eye of Chaos lay dormant for a full twelve months. But, you can't keep a good Lego addict down! With that, I rolled the 3 inch layer of dust off the MOC like so much dryer lint and got back to work...which brings us mercifully to the end of my long-winded excuses, and on to this post:

We pick up with continued work on the bottom portion of the ship. Given that this will have to be mobile, I'm attempting to make some elements modular. Here I've attached a couple blocks for a modular section to fit over...

The new portion then slips over the permanent blocks...

...Pins lock the section in place...

...The bridge section snaps in over the new portion, helping to secure it...

...and finally, a panel snaps over the pins and exposed substructure to finish out the modular element.

Here I've included a couple close-ups to show some of the detail work, including interior docking bays in the right close-up image...

...and a shot of the detail work on the top (which will actually be the bottom, since the whole bottom half of the ship will eventually get flipped over when displayed).

The next portion, which is shown here, is permanent. In the process of taking some creative license from the Spirit of Fire - this being a sister ship, after all - I was toying around with some detail to add to a relatively simple area of the ship. Nnenn's notion of the "most useless Lego part ever invented" came to mind, and I couldn't resist incorporating it as a tribute to Nate. Hopefully, I can find some place as well, for a small tribute to Heather Braaten. Both she and Nate are no longer with us, but certainly not forgotten.

The arrow points to space left for the next modular element...

...I attached a modified plate with handle to the permanent section, then the next modular portion fits into place, and the modified plate locks it down.

And so the journey continues. Here's hoping I can avoid the pitfalls of last year...especially Phipson (just kidding pal - nothin' but love!)...and keep up the pace into the fall. If so, one more WIP entry, and then we should be just about ready for the final show and tell.

Thanks for all who've hung in there with me for soooooooo long. And to all who stopped by here...thanks for taking the time to have a look!

Cheers, gang!

Quoting Mihe Stonee Hello Mark, sorry that i have to ask again - how is the state of your "Chaos" ;-) ? Sometimes, if i'm on the page, i look forward to the finished MOC - but it seems again that you meant late "snow"fall ? I'm really anxious about this and can't wait to see it complete :-) ! Even i know how long a journey could be... I started the USS Sulaco some weeks ago for the 3rd time in 2 years, because i wasn't happy with some sections.
It's still in the works, but going smoothly at the moment. I had to tear apart a LARGE portion of the underside in order to make adjustments for a different display stand. That's finished, and I'm now working on the engine section at the back. I plan to debut it at Brickworld Indy in early March, so it will...I said IT WILL!!!!...be completed by then. It's been a couple of years since I've been able to build consistently, but these last few weeks have seen daily build time, and it's been great! I started another smaller ship, as well. Hope to have that for BW Indy, also. Thanks for checking in from time to time...won't be too much longer!

Quoting Mihe Stonee I looked through your built again and can't still wait for the finished Eye of Chaos... ;-) ! But to your last thought: *Infinity has some awesome details, but it's a bit boxy in it's design. I think the next ship might be something with a bit more variety in it's form.* How would be a ship from Eve online ? Maybe the Megathron :-) ? http://pozniak.pl/wp/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/megathron_retribution.jpg - i think if you would built this => it could get really beautiful... ;-) !
Thanks so much for the nice comments, and the suggestion. That's got some potential. Right now, I'm just trying to find the time to finish up the Eye. Once that's done (if it's ever done!!!!), then I'll start giving some thought to potential new subjects.

LOL. Yep, still lurking about. I'm no longer all that active with building, but still doing some when time allows (mostly for VLUG), and definitely visit and comment on MOCpages from time to time. And of course, I'm still working with Chris and Sean behind the scenes doing general moderation of posts and comments, trouble-shooting, etc. Hope to post the finished Eye of Chaos some time in late fall or early winter.

Quoting Mihe Stonee Dear Mr. Kelso, I don't know if there are'nt enough people out there who said that this will be one of the best ships ever seen. But... it is nearly mai and we are all waiting for this! So what Brickworld Indy did you mean - 2016? Choke aside... How is the state of this masterpiece ? Or do you have to clean it first from meters of dust ;-) ?
LOL. I figured the world of Lego had forgotten about me by now! BW Indy's a done deal, but right now I'm in the midst of a collaboration with Phipson for BW in Chicago (June). Sooooo, it'll be July at the earliest before this beast sees any more action. I'd planned on having the *insert explitive* thing done years ago, but like someone said, "if you want to give God a good laugh...make plans." Here's hoping the summer will see the end of the long, long, looooong journey!

Truly awe-inspiring SHIP. I love the close-ups of how you made all the little details. I'm not sure I could even render something that size in a LEGO CAD program, considering RAM limits... BTW, it's me, I'm back on MOCpages after a long absence.

Thanks for the nice comments, Jacob. To answer your question, I'd say Bricklink is my primary resource. Hard to beat a site that provides multiple sellers, lower (than PAB) pricing, and custom selection of parts. I'll use Lego's on line PAB every now and then, if the parts are cheaper than BL (rare, but it does happen). And ebay is no longer an option for me, personally. Lego has become too popular to buy on ebay and get the bulk deals that used to be available.

VERY impressive. Your work is extremely inspiring and well done, and I find myself returning to my roots as a child every time I see the amazing work you and fellow MOC builders have put into your LEGO projects. To satisfy a curious builder though, how do you get your parts? Do you order bulk randoms from sellers on places like eBay, or do you use a site like Bricklink to special order X amount of each part? Also, do you have a plan built on a program like LDD or do you just build from a pile?

Thanks, Jon! It's been really tough. First we moved, and now I'm doing a full kitchen renovation (gutted it, re-wired, re-plumbed, new everything...it's been insane!) Still, I'm managing a bit of Lego time on the weekends, and hope to finish this by Brickworld Indy in March...FINALLY!

Quoting Ryan Chevalier Can't wait to see the final product. This creation is slowly but surely pulling me out of my building slump. I'm hoping to do a unsc destroyer in the style of the heart of midlothian. I have to ask if you know where i can get lots of grey for a good price. That's all that's holding me back at this point.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any place these days where you can get Lego for a "good price" - not like a few years ago, anyway (when you could get POUNDS of it on ebay for a song). Lego has just become too popular, and the demand for it is too high to easily find deals. I'd recommend going with BL and perhaps PAB, as you can get exactly what you need in parts and volume. Best of luck!

Well, I've seen your paintings (been browsing your web site lately because my wife and I finally moved into a house so now we want to decorate. I'm thinking of getting the 2 birds chasing a Redtail [don't remember exact title] and it's no wonder that is your business. I think I've been spending more time looking at your paintings then here). Speaking of which, I'll get those measurements to you probably within the next two weeks sooo... enjoy the (Eye of) "Chaos" before the chaos! Do feel free to send me hate mail now HAHA ~ Chris.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only slow (snail?)-builder of Mocpages... I agree with you, a lego addict is never put down!! Very interesting to observe how you manage this huge creation. I appreciate more an more all kind of WIP. Thank you for sharing!! No pain, no gain (even for Lego... ^^)

Great to see a new entry of the Eye of Chaos, I was sooo curious to see how the SHIP developed. I can understand it took a while for the new post as sorting Lego Bricks is breathtaking :-), I spent last year 4 months each day doing nothing else than sorting after I teared down the Seterra, so welcome in the club of tired Legobricksorters. The way you have created the details of the SHIP are brilliant and inspiring! Good luck for the next steps, hope to see soon the final post. Thomas

It's a little sad,y'know? you're building this thing thats been undergoing construction for ages and then when you do finally get it together,it'll be destroyed in months time. Also,I'm sure you'll say yes but, have you ever bumped your head with that thing hang over you all the time (like the wife that never goes away XD)? anyway,I cant wait to see this thing together.....kind to think of it,I wonder if lee ever finnished the Pillar Of Autumn...?

Well well... the home-stretch is finally here! I've been waiting for this a looooong time Mr. Kelso. I've been through the "Dark Ages" just recently, and now I am baaaaack... with ideas all flowing though my head. Sorting is getting better, skills may be a tid bit rusty as they say. I myself have not been on here for about well, the whole year. Next month will be my 3RD MOCiversary! I know I've restarted my account a while ago (2010), but the memories of joining still remain. I plan on TRYING (yes it needs to be in all caps) to do something BIG. I don't know what, but something. I'm about to clean up my page by removing MOCs that I don't seem very worthy, changing my title and stuff. I should be in college by now, but I've decided it would've been too much. So... more free time to build and post on here. :D With all that said, here is one thing: Almost over, the pain is my friend. -Col. Biscuit.

Quoting Mr. Xenomurphy I've been reading your journal almost as long as I'm an active member of MOCpages and you managed to surprise and amaze me with every new entry. Each entry is a cornucopia of details, techniques and ideas - and each of them ready to be stolen by me for my own creations. Your endurance is exemplary and enviable. I consider myself being patient, but you are the king of patience. Your tribute to Nnenn is such a kind addition. All in all, this is probably the most interesting LEGO® creation I've ever seen. Oh, and don't forget to send me the instructions as soon as you are finished ;oP
Thanks for such kind words. Anything YOU deem worthy of thievery is nothing short of an honor to the victim! As for instructions...you don't need instructions from anyone, pal. And it's a good thing, cause I'll be lucky to finish this madness, much less create instructions!

HOLY GOODNESS, MARK! The suspense is killing me on this one. You know, it's one thing for a person to have a gazillion LEGO pieces, (anyone can do that with the right amount of determination, a bookmark on bricklink, and in most cases, maybe a touch of financial irresponsibility), but there are few in this world that can put them to such use as you have here. The design is absolutely brilliant. The details are stunning. The techniques that you've used here are in a different zip code from what most of us can reasonably aspire to. I'm sure when it's finished that it will be my all-time favorite SHIP, and I will undoubtedly be asking permission to feature it on My Current Favorites. Well done, and can't wait to see it completed.

First of all this thing is amazing, second, if you get fed up counting all your bricks, you can always give them a good home and send them to me and finally, is it going to take as long to download the thousand photos (when finished) as long as it took you to build this beast? lol. Great work, looking forward to the end product, maybe we can get 10,000 votes for cuusoo and get lego to sell it.

Looooong gone - all but the bridge. I kept that just as a sort of keepsake. The rest got recycled, and in fact, rises from the ABS ashes in the form of this bohemoth. Much of the interior is made from the bones of the Invisible Hand.

Top work Mark. As ever, it looks excellent. Once completed, this will be your Sistine Chapel. I finished my own behemoth (The Doomgiver) about two months ago, but I've not got around to photographing it yet. As I also fitted a move in the middle of building, I can appreciate some of the the heartache you're facing. I think DBG is probably the best colour to build a space ship in, I like it so much, I've started on another ship in the very same colour. Looking forward to the next update.

lol. Yeah, I can see how these entries would feel very repetitive - and in fact, they are, since each entry includes everything from previous posts. The goal with the WIP's is to illustrate each addition, how it fits with previous work, show growth, and to go behind the scenes to show how each section is tackled.
