Modded Lego 9398 4x4 crawler
mods I made to Lego 9398
About this creation
when I got the Lego 9398 built I was a little disappointed about details like the front push bar, the flimsy mirrors, no opening hood, and the sturdiness of the cab so after playing with it for a little while I went to work on it. I added a roll cage on the inside of the cab, overhauled the front pushbar and gave it smoke-stacks and duallys. then I realized that the 4ws would twist the axle in-between the 2 tires so I changed it to 2ws. for those that want to change theirs to 2ws I will show you how to do that further down the page.

How to change from 4ws to 2ws it is probally easier to follow the picture than to follow my words but you will want to take off the body and the rear wheels. make sure that the wheels are in the straight ahead position and pull the 2 pins out that are in front of the shock absorbers and then pull the shocks off of the rear axle then you will pull off the two ball joint links and push the rear axle assy. down prying apart the ball joint. THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!! if the u joint and 3l axle come off and are on axle side of the joint you will need to get the u joint and 3l axle off of the 4l axle without pulling the tan 4l axle out completely. try using screwdriver to help you get them off by putting pressure on the 4l axle and pulling out the u joint.after you get that out you will need 6 additional pieces(shown below)and then you put them on the rack and pinion to block it from moving on its own. then you put the axle assy. back on the truck frame, attach the ball joint links, and the shocks and put the two pins back in front of the shocks and then put the body back on. then you can put the u joint and 3l axle on top of the rear shocks or somewhere else. I f this made no sense look at the pictures they should help

see ya!!!!!

more to come tomorrow!!!!!!

I like the duallies too. This could be one capable off road recovery vehicle! All it needs now is a tow boom. Not too crazy about the positioning of the trailer hitch though. It really cuts down the departure angle. Great build.

The original was very good but I am not a big fan of 4ws and I am a big fan of duallys so I disabled 4ws and gave it duallys. one thing that you will want to do if you will be doing some rock crawling with it where it might flip over is add a rollcage on the inside of the cab(as shown in pics above) I am thinking that when I get back into legos again I am going to make the entire chassis black and make it a 6x6. hope you enjoy the set, it is a really well built one. ~Ma$on Mc]{echn!e~
Quoting MortalSwordsman . Crazy mods - I like them. I am building this at the moment so maybe I will try some of these out. What do you think of the playability of the original?

Nice! The 9398 really needs mods like this. I really like the stacks. Duals look a bit wide on this, but pretty cool. I like how you changed the 4ws to 2ws. I think you should take out the front diff tho. Very nice mods. 5/5
