City on the Undiri Moon (A Space Micropolis)
About this creation
Well, here it is. Iíve been threatening to build a space city for about a month and a half now, and, perhaps a bit slow on the delivery, I have finished.

So this was a fun but frustrating build. It was the first one that really tested my abilities as an artist as much as a LEGO builder. I decided then to go all out and make the main photo more about artistry and less about the MOC. The idea was to create a hazy, dreamy, yet decidedly science fiction setting. This background was done with GIMP, which, by the way, if you canít afford to drop a gazillion dollars, (I rounded to the nearest gazillion), on Photoshop, GIMP is a great substitute. It is free software that can be found through many avenues online and there are a plethora of brushes available online that made the background possible. I found my brushes at deviantart.com, which has a wide variety of brushes for GIMP, and is responsible for the sky. The landscape was created from three different pics from an image search. From there it was just cutting, pasting, cropping, resizing, and fiddling with opacity and color saturation.

Now to Undiri. At one stage of my life, immediately preceding the stage of changing diapers and washing bottles, I fancied myself a budding author, and put a lot of time into a science fiction novel following one of the many adventures of Tark Thysco and his talking spaceship, Almeisa.

HEY! Stop laughing!

Undiri was a planet that Tark visited and the planet had a moon. The moon had a city amidst the perpetual fog that rested on the surface and I modeled this MOC, as well as the main photo, after that concept. So please enjoy the pics that follow. I took a lot, deleted the ones that didnít turn out well, and couldnít decide which to delete after that, so I included the rest. Enjoy.

This MOC was blogged on Brickpop!

I think of this central building as being some sort of council building.

What would a space city be without a dome.

This was the last building that I built for this city, and really had to scrounge to find enough pieces to make it look good.

The top of the council building.

The council building's entry point.

This was one of my favorite buildings.

A few shots of what I think of as the city's welcome center. You can see the landing platform on top and the monorail track passes through it.

The landing platform with the space transport.

If you look, you can see where the passengers exit the monorail.

A few shots of the monorail.

This may have been the building that turned out the best.

Extraordinary stuff. I love the 'thumbnail sketch' aspect to micros, the clever use of parts to suggest much more complex things, and you have achieved that in spades with this piece. The monorail alone is quite brilliant...!

Awesome micro-scale here! Details make the difference between a good MOC and a great MOC, and every time I look at another photo I see another detail that I like. Probably the best micro-city I've seen, words fail me!

Its amazing how much detail you put into it at that sort of scale. I wish I could build like that.

Quoting Garry King What an incredible build. This has such an array of stunning detail and complexity. Loving all of this and I'm going back for another look.... Well done..
Thanks a lot, Garry. I'm glad you like it. This one was all about the details, but then, I don't really build any other way. Any chance we'll see you tackle one of Ralph McQuarrie's cities?

Quoting Andre Benjamin I'm wasn't too familiar with space microcities, but I think I'll be a diehard fan now! Those buildings, especially the one with the big SNOT arch and the death star-dome, are all pristine! Excellent work.
Thanks, Andre! I think the kid in all of us likes arches of SNOT, (Hee, hee). I'm always looking for an opportunity to use that Death Star piece, and with your skill, I hope you pour some of it into a city at some point, I'd like to see what you come up with.

Quoting David Roberts I've been loking at this MOC again. Are the mountains in the background Fiztroy (El Chalten) and Cerro Torre in Patagonia? I was on an expedition down there in November and those hills look familiar!
That's quite the eye you have there. That's Cerro Torre just to the left of center. I'm assuming it was the incriminating "ice mushroom" at the top that gave it away. The Patagonian Ice Field had the craggy look that I was really wanting for the shot. In fact, I even cut the mountains out of a shot that I believe shows an El Chalten pasture. Of course, I drained all the color out of the mountains and dragged down the opacity quite a bit for the sake of the picture, which must have made it a little tougher to identify. I'm impressed, good sir.

Quoting Daniel Mayhew This looks like it took a lot of time. Very nice. It looks like the main building could take off as a flying saucer.
Goodness, Daniel, did this ever take a lot of time. And it's funny that you mention the flying saucer. Those 1/4 circle pieces came from Alien Conquest, and they belonged to two different flying saucers.

Quoting Garett Smith Great build Tim. Say did you perhaps take apart the orion to build this city? I thought I heard you talking about that in the Mini Space (Micro and Nano Space Builders Group).
Thanks, Garett. Yes. The Orion was dismantled. When I could see past the tears, I started the city;) Unfortunately, it's still a bit early since the end of my dark age for my collection to be to a point where I can build something the size of the Orion and still be able to do much else beyond that. (I really had to scrape to build Dee-Derp).

Thanks again, sir. You are one of my faves on this site, so your enthusiasm is that much more appreciated. The premise of the novel was a race through space, where Tark encounters many different types of spaceships and characters, and yes, I do want to build a series of MOCs based on what I had completed in the book, especially Almeisa. At this point, though, I don't think I have the collection to do it justice.

Thank you much, Brody. I am extremely proud of this. I don't do enough to quell those artistic urges that I think every single one of us find ourselves plagued with from time to time, so this MOC demanding that side of me was challenging and refreshing at the same time. Hopefully, you won't have to wait so long for the next one.

Quoting George Staples I have to say, at first glance, this just looks like the space ship is the build. Then looking at the main pic closer, you can tell, it's a lego city. I don't know which is better, your photo editing skills, or your building skills.
What's funny, is that this is my first real photo editing that I've done. Everything else is borrowed photos with my spaceship set as a foreground, so I'm glad you like it so much.

Quoting Mr. Doo When I first saw this, I thought it was a poster board with a wimpy spaceship pose in front of it. When I clicked because of curiosity, my jaw fell off. (I'm still looking for it now) This is stunning! The council building REALLY reminds me of the Jedi Temple on Corouscant, and the buildings and little details all fit together perfectly! Couldn't have any more improvement, because it's so good! Keep it up! God Bless ~ Mr.Doo
Glad you like it. Thinking that my main photo was a poster is a higher compliment than I would expect, and I would be lying if I said that Coruscant was not a major influence for this MOC.

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist This is... insane. You must of spent plenty of time on every inch of this, and it shows. It actually looks like it could be a sci-fi microcity, not just bunch of bricks tossed together. The monorail's brilliant, the way its track weaves through the city looks excellent. The buildings are all superb, and your colour choice has many highlights among a strong base colour which looks incredible. The main photo is also amazing, I could easily see it as a book cover. Very well done, you certainly have a knack for micro.
Thanks a lot, Luke. Yes. It was a lot of time put into this. I don't have a lot of free time to myself, but this is pretty much what I spent it on. The monorail is one of my favorite parts as well. A book cover? I never thought of it, but thanks. That's a big compliment.

Quoting David Alexander Smith This was really worth the wait. There has been some serious time and invention put into the whole thing. The fact that every building is unique and stylically coherent gives a sense of a truly believable city. The top down view appeals to the inner-town planner in me. In terms of favourite pieces it's a hard call, but I'd have to rank the raised landing pad and the amazing tiered building/terminal as the most refined. Of course a monorail is always good, and I love what I refer to as Blacktron towers. Overall just a fabulous piece of work, I'm going back for another look.
Thanks, David. It was a lot of fun building this. My favorite buildings are the larger ones with the details put in. The scattered, mid-height, cylindrical buildings had to be there for the sci-fi look. As to the Blacktron tower: I added the yellow as an afterthought. Before I added it, it looked like it should have a fiery red eye floating over the top of it.
