About this creation
The Dromedary class starfighter is a Canadian starship for destroying space stations, large starfreighters, satellites, and orbital bombardment platforms. It is designed so that a base to launch from is not necessary, thus making it a valuable guerrilla ship. Armed with a nuclear missile and a pair of machine guns, it generally performs hit-and-run strikes then flees hostile starfighters. This is a creation for the Real World Starfighter Contest. Here's a run-through of how a Dromedary starfighter would carry out a mission...

1. The fighter extends a collapsable helicopter rotor. Fed by the ship's fuel, it spins fast enough to lift the vessel away from Earth's surface to an altitude of at least 4500 meters.

2. The rotors are then turned off and returned to their compartment.

3. Before the ship falls too much, the engine kicks in. This rockets the Dromedary into space.

4. The missile is cradled to the ship by two magnetic clamps. The missile has sensors that register when these clamps are disengaged, and upon disengagement it activates its rocket propulsion system and jets forward to deliver the payload.

5. Upon firing the rocket, the starfighter will generally flee planet-ward. However, the machine guns can be used in a pinch if other starships are on an intercept course.

6. After atmospheric reentry, the fighter releases a parachute to slow the descent.

7. Once velocity has reached a reasonable level, the rotors are used to further slow the vessel and go to the landing site.

8. Landing gear in the sides...

... And front/bottom fold out to protect the starship's underside.

The cockpit is situated to give the pilot superior visibility.

The Dromedary with the parachute and rotors out. The parachute is 100% purist, being Darth Vader's cape from a technic figure.

The side, with many greebles... er... crucial systems.
Thanks for stopping by!

Cool shape and I like all the different functionality you've added to this. But I have to ask the question: What does this have to do with a one-humped camel?
Thanks, the compartments that contain the parachute and rotors form a slight hump shape. |

It's overall shape reminds me of the Humpback-freighter from Freelancer.
It looks quite nice but I'm concerned about the window: Do you know how much trash circles the earth? One microscopic piece hitting the window and your mission is over. You would not build a tank with a panorama wind shield, would you.
At last, a nuke might be somewhat overpowered for some simple bombing run. The EMP would surely fry your ship's electronics before it would out of range. Normal explosives might be enough.
I'm not sure that I'm familiar with that ship, I'll search it up later. Thanks, I agree. Perhaps there's some sort of magnetic shielding to protect the cockpit and circuitry. Besides, you never know when you'll need a ridiculously over-powered missile... |

All that sport going on a few miles down the road from me has me thinking about the coming MOC Olympics. If we meet in the second round this time I'm the one who's scared... This is gorgeous.
Thanks Nick, the games are certainly approaching fast. If we do face each other, I'd pray that the category's not cars or architecture... |

You obviously put as much effort into thinking this ship through as into building it. You know how much I like that, therfore, this is a rather special creation. The parachute and the rotor are dangerously close together during the landing process, but I think the pilot releases the parachute completely before he uses the rotor. Very cool design and ideas. Good luck in the contest (in case it's not over already).
Thanks, I'm glad you like the idea. I would have released the parachute, but it's held on rather well so we just have to imagine it detached. ;) |

One other thing I want to mention, and just ignore if you are using a different technique for masking the image for a new background, but on the edit points of the mask, you can set the points to be either linear or smooth, if you set them to smooth, then you can really tune in the mask around a radius like the cockpit. If you don't have that capability, then you have to have about 3 times as many edit points to create a perfectly smooth cut. Z
I don't think that my program has that capability, but I'll check. Thanks for the tip!

The rotor should really be larger. But otherwise it is a nice starship, although I am not sure how gunpowder-based guns fire in space...
I knew that someone would say that, which is why I mentioned that the rotor is fed by the rocket fuel allowing it to spin far faster than normal. As for gunpowder, we Canadians have a few secrets... ;) |

Awesome, Luke. Another great starfighter. I like how you went all white on this one. The cockpit is fantastic. Some real top-class problem solving to get that canopy in there. The extra compartments for the rotor and the parachute are a nice real-world touch. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
Thanks, chances are you'll be seeing some castle in the coming weeks, but you never know. ;) |
