For the next couple of weeks the world’s eyes will be on London. I mean England. I mean Britain?
About this creation
The name of the British nation can be confusing to Brits and non-Britons alike. So in this instalment of SG Explains I will explain to you the difference between England, Great Britain and the United Kingdom and make sure you never make that mistake again!

Tony: So guys, I’m going on holiday to the island of England this year…

SG: Arrghhh!!! Get it right!!!

Tony: Noooooo!

Naïve Young Girl: Mr Gypsy, why did you kill big bwother?
SG: Oh, child. He didn’t know the difference between England and Great Britain. It’s a common misconception that can annoy many Brits.

Naïve Young Girl: Will you teach me the difference, Mr Gypsy? I don’t want to be killed.
SG: Of course child. Hahaha. I’ll teach you in a simple way.

SG: Welcome to the British Isles! The British Isles is a small archipelago in northwestern Europe containing two main islands and many smaller ones.
One of these islands is called Great Britain and three people live on it. The other is called Ireland and two people live on it.

SG: The people who live on Great Britain represent the countries on Great Britain. Scotland, Wales and England.

SG: The guys on Ireland represent countries, The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

SG: Each one of the countries on these islands have a different degree of independence. Only one of them is recognised as a nation in the United Nations. In fact, you’ve probably only heard of three of the five nations in the British Isles.

SG: However, at one point in time they were all united together in one country.

SG: But that’s a long story.

SG: Now, these five guys can be organised into groups.

SG: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland go together to make the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Or more simply, the UK.
The UK is the country that some may know as Britain or Great Britain. Sometimes it is just referred to as England. But this is wrong and offensive to the other nations (constituent countries) of the UK. The UK is officially a country as it has it’s own Head of State, Embassies, and is recognised in the UN.

SG: The Republic of Ireland remains out of the UK and is it’s own nation. Also recognised by the UN.

SG: I have taken the liberty of making a diagram to summarise this MOC.

SG: If you’re American an easy way of remembering the difference is this.

SG: But it is important not to consider the political structure of the UK and USA to be the same. Because it’s not. So be careful when using this method of remembering the difference.

SG: So, there you have it, the difference between Great Britain, England and the UK. A complicated thing to get your head around the first time. But once you know it you will be sure to avoid embarrassing mistakes and causing offence to some Brits.

Naïve Young Girl: So now I know! Thank you Mr Gypsy!

SG: No problem, child. But remember, if you need something explained, just come to Space Gypsy and he’ll tell you!
Yeah, I know the builds were a bit slack, but that’s because this MOC was more about getting a message across and less focussed on the builds.
Thank you for viewing! And if you want something explained, just ask!

Will you do a SG Explains for the governments?
Probably. A little more difficult to explain. But I was thinking along those lines. |

I wouldn't quite agree with your equivalent table, as Britain would not be the equivalent of America as America could refer to (I think) North or South and both are continents.
That's a fair point.
The reason why I said that is becuase alot of people refer to the USA as America. Though it is wrong, it is vaughly correct. |

You explained the difference perfectly and with a lot of humor. I love the pictures where SG turns evil and kills the man and then explains everything to the girl with much patience, it's just to crazy, hehe! :) However, I don't really get it why every part of the UK has their own soccer team, every other country has only 1, (haha :P). Excellent MOC, this one will definitely stay in my mind. :)
Hehe. Thanks, Michael. I think there are individual soccer teams becuase each nation within the UK value their independence. Some more than others.
The current Scottish government wants to pull Scotland out of the United Kingdom. |

You're right, it can annoy many Brits, especially me, especially when it is other Brits who make the mistake, especially the fact that our our olympic team is 'Team GB' instead of (the correct) 'Team GB & NI' or 'Team UK', further spreading the ignorance.... oops, too much 'epecially' :P
I think the reason to why it is called Team GB is because athletes from Northern Ireland can choose to either represent Britain or Ireland.

it also annoys people from the ROI when Ireland is referred to as a part of Britain or the UK, but that of course is what rocket launchers are for >:D |
