The Lotus 49 Formula 1 Racing Car

I understand :) if only there was a smaller differential part (or a way to make a smaller one)
I was thinking about making a classic Lotus F1 car, is there one you would suggest? (one with the engine showing) |

i'm thinking a real car would have problems, maybe even more skidding than a solid without differential
Too right! But even at this small scale the wheel skids. It is very important to me that my mocs are playable. With all my cars, figures and animals I often sacrifice looks/aesthetics for function. |

Just wondering, did the car really have 1 wheel drive, or could you not figure out how to do the rear axle? (or some other reason) Hahaha! Because this moc has steering you can play/push it around. If I used a solid rear axle one of the wheels would skid/lock when turning a corner, I used '1 wheel drive' to avoid this problem. It is effectively a fake differential. Thanks for the interest.

Hi Mortal. ;0 I'm back for a second look. It looks much better at second glance. I particularly like the ultra-high (and ridiculous) rear spoiler on the main pic. I somehow don't remember it. That's odd. :-) Also a clever way of making the #1 on the sides. -LB Jr. Thanks LB. Yeah I changed the main pic to show off the ridiculously high rear spoiler. Oh to answer your earlier question. I love all the sports, but my faves are: Gymnastics, all the martial arts (including boxing), cycling, swimming, track and field and the list goes on and on. Can’t wait to see Usain Bolt and the Blade Runner. To coin an American phrase I am a real 'Sports Fan'. Hope you are enjoying the Olympics too.

Great work, as always. I like the overall shaping and engine detail. I agree with Lego Builders about the diffuser and the hood shaping though; the diffuser sticks out a bit too match from the front wing and the hood is a bit too blocky (perhaps some of http://peeron.com/inv/parts/61678 would work?). I also dislike the mix of studs and tiles; having just one or the other can look great, but mixing both is a bit hard visually. Nevertheless, a great MOC. Thanks Halhi, I totally respect your constructive feedback, my style is a bit eclectic (just like me) and is not to everyone’s taste. I prioritise overall shape above smaller details. Yes the hood is a bit blocky, and I did try those bowed 1x4 pieces but they made the hood to bumpy, they are also one plate too high. A longer sweeping bow which is only two plates high would be perfect. I also wanted to include the two V-shaped air vents (visible in the birds eye view photo). Also remember that there is a steering mechanism under the hood so there is not much room to play with, Thanks for your comment :D I always appreciate thoughtful constructive criticism.

3-D printers start from 800€ (gulp!). I am still not sure if one can use materials that are as strong as ABS is... About the helmet: isn't there any wheel that you can squeeze into the helmet, and so make connection with a technic rod?
haha I did try that but no luck. I even tried a technic cog with elastic bands wrapped around it, but that did not work well. |

Hi Joost :D, The first picture is the 49B. The big wing is so high to avoid ‘dirty air’ from the car in front. It was banned so it was replaced with the lower wing (the 49C). I did try the technic helmet, it is a perfect size but I can’t connect it to the axle??? I also tried to build a brick head but it looked funny. That 3D model thing sounds awesome – I want one :D |

PS: I've read an article about 3-D printers, they suggest to build your own Lego parts. You know anyone who has experience with it? (Which material is used in 3-d printing anyway?) |

Nicely done, Mortal. I particularly adore the suspension detail - something that I always struggle with in my f1 cars. To be honest I'm not a huge fan of the hose at the air intake but it's not bad. I'm also not too keen on the sloping on the hood. I think a more gradual, cleaner technique that used on my Ferrari 643. Still very good. I should try to finish up my transporter as it's finished save for wrong colors in some areas. I'm just too lazy to order it from BL. This is a great addition to the CRT group as is all your other ones. You live in Bristol right? How far is it from the Olympics? 5/5 -LB Jr.
Hi LB, thanks for your feedback. I agree about the hood area. I tried several different things but I am still not happy with it. I did consider snot, but I thought it would be too heavy (too high). I will give it ago, Shame you don’t like my pipe work, it is kind of a theme with my large cars. It is another one of my mocs that look much better from a distance. Hahaha.
