Also, since I've seen your previous animation, I would have mentioned a tripod, but it seems you already have one. Get a better one, or use duct tape or even a solid gyroscopic frame made out of lego. Anything to ensure it stays where you want it to be when capturing.

I'd offer a number of suggestions on how to deal with your relatives. Truth usually works, but may as well keep them out of sight, out of mind. As for things to help you on animations, I'm going to presume they'd be stop motion animations, so any software that puts individual frames together to be composited and have post processing effects would generally be After Effects, for something free, that is open source, you can try http://www.virtualdub.org/
