This is my entry for the BCBS July 2012 challenge build - "Alien zone"
About this creation
In the year 2153, a shocking discovery was made on a planet known simply as M33: Civilization. This, in itself, was not shocking to the scientific community. What baffled astrobiologists was that this civilization was formed from about twenty distinct but closely related species, all of which also existed in the wild.
Recently, the answer to this puzzle was discovered in the form of a parasite called the brainwyrm. Brainwyrms are highly intelligent but but their body structure makes them incapable of forming a civilization. Instead, brainwyrms infect less intelligent animals and take control of their brain.
In their larval stage, brainwyms will feed on other aquatic invertebrates such as copepods, flatworms, and roundworms. Once they have grown to about a centimeter in length, they will begin looking for a host. Typically they find an area of moist ground and lie in the mud until a large animal steps on them. Then the brainwyrm attaches itself to the foot of the animal and burrows into the skin. To prevent detection, they secrete anesthetic and seal the wound with new skin. Next, the brainwyrm will follow the nervous system until it reaches the brain. Once inside the brain, the wyrm will enter the adult stage of its life cycle. During this stage, they grow their own brain and will extend neurons into the brain of the host. After they have incorporated themselves into their host's brain, they can control they host's brains and will begin using the host as a vehicle for their own ideas.

It has been shown that brainwyrms are highly adaptable and can infect any species, not just those native to M33. Due to eggs being carried on spaceships visiting M33, brainwyrms have spread to other civilizations, but the full extent of their range is not known. It is probable that they exist on earth, in fact, some scientists believe that up to 30% of people are infected with a brainwyrm.

One of the best uses I've seen this year of the inverted tire as segmentation. Menacing, disturbing; creepified goodness all over. Especially like the maw and tentacle cluster, CHEERS ;) |

Why, that's preposterous! There's no way it could go undetected like that! Someone would notice! What a stupid idea! *wyrm peeks out of nose* |

Not sure what's creepier: the backstory, or the organic-ness that this thing actually projects! ;-) Really cool! |

Freaky scary beast. I'm sure I'm not infected--or is that my brainwyrm talking? "Nope! All clean. No need to disinfect THIS brain." |

Very well done, but the eyes (or eyelike organs) seem kind of moot, as worms like this would not need them. Very interesting biology, though. |

Very interesting idea, and I like the "scientific" story you made for it! The tires around its mouth are fitting very well, and I really like his overall design! Good luck in the contest! |

I second the emotion. Great build. Could it infect a half-organic half-plant? Like a Coconut being?
Only if it had a brain. |
