AFOL of the Year Trophy by Chris Phipson
About this creation
Moral with this story? You bet!

"LIFE LOVES IRONY!"

I'll explain...

Flash back to this time last year, and I was at the top of my game. I had just come off of a winning BW collaborative, "The Journey of the Fellowship" with VurtuaLUG, and was more than halfway through my most detailed and ambitious MOC yet. Then, to top it off, I was honored to have been the 2011 MOCie Awards AFOL of the Year recipient! Wow, was I flying high!

But, then life took over. About the time I received this beautiful trophy in the mail from Chris, my Lego world was shattered by the real world. We put our house up for sale, and suddenly every last piece of Lego had to go into storage. Meanwhile, the art world was plummeting and every last ounce of time and energy suddenly had to be dedicated to either keeping the business alive, or selling our house and finding a new home to live in. And just like that, everything Lego came to a screeching halt!

Still, you can't keep a true Lego addict down! So, let me introduce you to the new Legotorium. (Which, I might add finally started seeing some building action again this morning for the first time in over half a year!) On the left, I've added an entertainment center. I can now watch movies, tv series, or - a favorite of mine - the old Looney Tunes cartoons while building.

The arrangement is still very much the same, but I've got a bit more elbow room now, and a lot more space for display of some of my favorite set boxes. Still a lot of cardboard boxes, too. But, in time those should get cleared out as well.

And here we get to the core reason for this post...this beautiful trophy! My heartfelt thanks to Chris Phipson for his amazing creation!

It's become a tradition for the former year's recipient of the award - in this case, our own illustrious Chris Phipson - to build the trophy for next year's award winner.

So, now with the 2012 MOCie awards in full swing, it's going to be up to me to come up with the trophy for the new AFOL king.

I said at the start that life loves irony. The moment I'm graced with such an honor as AFOL of the year, I have to put away the Lego. *sigh* But, on the up-side, and ironically again, I'm back in the ring for another round just in time to build the trophy for the next recipient. It's going to be tough to match such a terrific design as this, and I can only hope I'm up to the challenge.

Meanwhile, let me take a moment to say it's GREAT to be back! My most heartfelt thanks to all who voted for me last year. And a special thank you to Chris for hosting this event each year, and - on a very personal note - for blessing me with this wonderful memento of the communities kindness and support!

Now get over to the MOCie 2012 group and cast your votes for the new king!

Cheers, all!

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 seems like I m not the only one 2012 has been hard to, I was on the streets from nov 2011 to march 2012, without any lego parts, a real nightmare! I got back to work now, and the boxes start to add up like you, lol, I m still impressed with your collecton, you re only 2 years older than me, but, it seems you ve been 20 years collecting...lol, 11 months without touching the ship, it must have been as hard for you than me with Cybercity, I soooo understand!!! well, now that you re back in buisness, good luck mark!
Sorry to hear that you've had such a difficult time as well. Shortly after posting this, I once again, had to put away the Lego (renovations to the new house this time). Let's hope 2013 is more prolific for the both of us! Cheers!

Amazing to see you back mate, glad you survived the change and back stronger than ever. The Eye of Chaos is still looking good, was hoping you'd forgot to pack away 343i's ref photos before you took these lol, maybe next time eh:D Also congrats on the award, well deserved. Perhaps after you finish this one you could better it with a build of Halo 4s UNSC Infinity, course it would have to be bigger, lol.

Quoting Marc dZ As an AFOL and concerned -just like you- by reality of life, I often wonder if building (and buying) bricks is worth it. Spending money in ABS plastic bricks when there is so much more usefull (?) to do with it... But I think I understand now: no matter what we have to face in our everyday life, we need and we have to dream. Dream and fly away. It's easier to be strong when you can still dream. That is what brings to us Lego. Cheers, Mark!! Greetings from France.
Well said! We live in a very different world from that which we came (ie the "natural world"). There are very few moments of peacefullness and stillness in our contemporary lives. Lego - for me, anyway - is that opportunity to still my mind, focus, and shut out the strife that seems so prevelant in everyday living.

It's great to hear you're starting to get back in the action brother! Everyone has to step back and take care of reality every now and again....such a shame really. :P Can't wait to see the new design!

And it is GREAT to have you back. As a company employee designer I've got a relatively safe job and I admire every amazing artist (like you), who is gutsy enough to be a freelancer. I know I'm not. --- Your new Legotorium looks very cosy, which, I think, is very important. Chris' impressive trophy goes very well with your new lair's interior.

When I built Chris his trophy, I sent it with a note saying something like, "Now you have to build an even better one for next year's recipient." Wow! Mission accomplished! That's a nice looking trophy. You've got your work cut out for you, but somehow I have a feeling you'll rise to the challenge.

Quoting Dave Kaleta The king is alive, long live the king! I see Kelso Shrugged in the old laboratory; hope you're still enjoying it, but not SO much that you've scavenged it for parts! ~Dave
Ha, good eye, sir! Yes indeed, Kelso Shrugged is alive and well, and a cherished part of my collection. Rest assured, that one will always remain in tact and on display!

Original Xbox, nice. Too bad you can't play the Halo Wars disc on it, that would be the easiest way to get some Eye of Chaos inspiration with the cutscenes.

Ya know, I considered waiting a year to comment on this... ;) Jokes aside, it's great to have you back on the pages. I know we always talk on the phone but having you active here again feels like you're coming back home. You're very welcome for the trophy, it was WELL deserved and I'm just glad I could come up with a design that won't damage the asthetic of your new lego room too much. Now get to work on this year's winner's trophy... you know... as soon as we figure out who it is and all... ~ Chris.

Wow. To go a half year without any LEGO, especially with a collection of that size just beyond your reach, must have been nerve wracking 0.o. Congrats for surviving this test of manhood, and hope to see you building soon :)

I can only imagine how hard artists were hit by the recession, I suppose with people cutting back on spending they wouldn't list paintings among their priorities. Hopefully business picks up again, and it's good to hear that the LEGO will be returning to use. I look forward to seeing the next trophy design, beating the last one will certainly be a challenge.

Congrats and good to have you back Mark. It has been strange around here with your seeming absence. Now I understand. I just tried selling my house and it really made it hard to do anything with all the open inspections etc. I can only imagine now actually having to move! Love the new set up, and it really is kind of cool seeing a builders Lego cave. Gives atmosphere. I should shoot mine one day. Good news, 2012 is only half over, you can still make waves this season!

Cool trophy. Tats got a lot of clear parts. More importantly, does this mean we will get some updates soon on the Eye?
