End of the World Battlescape: at Brickworld 2012
LIVE(ish) FROM BRICKWORLD 2012! To fit the "End of the World" theme for Brickworld 2012, we created an 18 foot long 3D display for all of my Bio-MOCs. It has a painted desert, volcanic, and Glacier sections. For now, I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy!
About this creation

Have you ever wished for a giant playground for your Bionicles? Well this is what we have at Brickworld Chicago 2012. The display was made by my god-uncle Glen VanAlkemade, who, being a train enthusiast, had experience building outdoor model landscapes. The volcano spews smoke and is lit from within. The hole in the ice is filled with water. We wanted to represent Bio-MOCing at this awesome event, so we hope we did you all proud. Comments welcome.

Quoting Clever Crowe He did fantastic work on this, Nate, and it was good to see your MOCs populating the landscape. What made the volcano 'smoke', one of those atomizers, orrrrr dry ice mebbe? Just curious. Cheers!
Smoke machine, M8! We used a lot of juice that weekend. It had a remote footswitch so that when we saw someone checking out the volcano, we could blast it. It was awesome!

Quite a few. Check out the picture on my home page to get an idea. I've been collecting since I was four...it's my thing.

Quoting Lego Obsessionist I love the new dark shots! BTW, Nannan took a video hightlighting Brickworld, and spent a minute admiring your display. It might be worth letting him know you built it, particularly since the video was posted on TBB. http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/328697
Thanks for the tip. My display shows up at 7:05 into the movie for anyone interested seeing the thing all at once. Also if anyone has any tips on embedding video on MOCpages, my god-uncle made a stop animation movie of my MOC Ten-Shei the Forgotten's last trip through the desert and a visit to the volcano. It features the MO Minis for any BCBS fans. Help requested on the embedding. Thanks!

Quoting L.A. Miranda I live in Spain. I have never travelled abroad. I really want to go at least once on my live to an event like this one, and meet some MOCers, but it's really hard to make this happen... It would be a pleasure to meet another gentleman like you, Nathan (;D), and see that AWESOME FLOWER on reality!!! *^* I hope you don't mind if I save the first picture on my computer...
That's fine, but I have to give the photo credit to Alex from Texas for the first two shots. I saw them and begged him for copies. He gladly agreed but asked for copies of my friend's music that was the soundtrack at our exhibit. His music project is called Millipede and it's dark and ambient and very Bionicle-ish! I have some cool grown-up friends. Also, if you put the pictures somewhere on the 'net, mention that I made it if you could. Thanks!

Quoting Chronos Omega Yeah, it would be great to see you (and a bunch of others of course) there... I live in New England so it's not too long of a trip to the Chicago area, but my family always has really busy scheduling in the summer. My dad says that some year we'll end up going, though. :)
Cool.
  June 18, 2012
I'm guessing everyone had a great time, which is awesome! I can't wait to see the other pictures from it. Wish I could go to one of these sometime, but Ohio, Lego central it is not lol. Chicago is an eight hour drive from here and my family would only sees all that money spent in gas as something to outweigh going to a Lego event, which they see as childish and frivolous.

Quoting Chronos Omega Seems like everyone had an awesome time, why do I keep missing these events!? I really hope I can eventually go to some convention or other, at some point.
This one is really friendly. If you can make it to Chicago, it would be great to meet you (and some of your MOCs) IRL.

Quoting Vorred 03 What a fantastic battlescape! It makes the creations look many times cooler, and the designs like the broken ice are amazing! This is the best diorama I've seen so far! Excellent work!
Thanks Vorred! We will seriously update this page once the convention is over and MOCpages uploads again. We have some night-lit pictures of the volcano that look unbelievable! Thanks again. BTW, LegoMETAL stopped by with some of his MOCs and we took some shots on the 'scape with some of our MOCs. Cool!

Quoting Cody G Excellent battlescape, although I partially agree with Dennis. The non-Lego landscape is a bit distracting from the actual MOCs, but it does give life to them in ways that wouldn't be possible without it. Perhaps not the best idea for a Lego convention, but for any other display, it would be fantastic. I want one. :)
We thought about this a lot. To brick or not to brick? We thought about how ridiculous Bionicles would look in a System environment seeing as how they were always portrayed in "real world" alien landscapes and not a land of bricks. To us this display was a way of showing others how Bionicles might look in their native environment. We realize Brickworld is a predominantly System event and so what we did was outside of the box. We got the comment of "that's not Lego" from a few people but mostly we got slack-jawed looks of wonder from people of all ages. At the end of the day, the environment was simply a display for the MOCs, and together, we thought they looked pretty cool. BTW, I have better photos (Amazing night time photos!) coming as soon as the uploader is fixed, and a MOVIE! That's right. Glen not only makes cool displays, but he also messes around with stop-action movies. Need to sleep. Check back in a couple of days. Thanks for stopping by.

Quoting Dennis Price Honestly, I felt your creations were great but I didn't appreciate so much display area in the main ballroom being dominated by a massive non-Lego backdrop. To me, it did a disservice to the creativity you showed in the models.
Sorry you felt this way. It was massive to be sure. We were hoping to inspire the BioMOC community to come to BrickWorld and see how awesome the event is! Last year we had our MOCs jammed onto one table in rows, and it was okay, but this year was a lot more fun for people. Perhaps if BrickWorld moves to a bigger space like they hope to next year, the size of our display won't be an issue. Anyways, glad you liked the MOCs. Hope to see you next year.

My only real complaint is the positioning of the MOCs. None of them are clashing, and some are just standing around. I think you could have done better with that in mind.
