About this creation
In the icy wastelands of the Forgotten Realms, strange and dangerous creatures have evolved to roam the hostile environment...

The Ice Scorpion. It's made with about six hundred 1x1 and 1x2 trans clear plates; ah, the marvels of Bricklink. I was inspired to build it after seeing some of Sean Kenney's recent creations, and I think it turned out pretty well.

The adventuring party. A human fighter, and Elven sorcerer (who would be my character if this was D&D), a Dwarven fighter, and a human cleric. Plus their horses. Winning the initiative, the sorcerer conjures a magical flame in an attempt to scare off the creature of cold.

Overhead view. The diorama is about 60 studs by 40 studs, and it has a larger footprint than any of my prior creations.

The cliff was a last minute addition as I wouldn't have had enough white bricks to build a flat landscape there. However, it turned out quite well and I don't think that this would have looked half as good without it.

A couple of people asked for some alternate photos, and here they are. A minifigure's viewpoint.

Scorpion on blue background. This way it's far more visible.

One last photo of the scorpion. Thanks for dropping by!

Brilliant, Luke! The landscape is very well done. Very convincingly winter. The depiction of a struggle has been executed perfectly, but what steals the show here is obviously the scorpion. A stroke of pure genius to build it out of trans-clear and the forming is so well done that you don't need a description to know what it is. Fantastic! |

What did you use for inspiration?
Well, having 600 trans clear plates arrive was pretty big inspiration. ;) Then all Sean Kenney's animal MOCs inspired me to make an animal, and I had just finished reading a D&D book that mentioned a giant scorpion from the elemental plane of ice. While I was building it I also looked at a couple of real scorpions preserved in acrylic that I got from Cuba a few years back. |
