Three Robots (constrained building experiments)
These three robots were built to kick start the constrained building group I have established. I chose robots as they are quick and easy to build. The aim was to show how you might tackle several of the constrained themes on offer in the group. Details of each of the constraints used are noted below.
About this creation

I'm not expecting a huge amount of likes for these robots. They are as they say experiments. However, please do leave comments on the process and idea of constrained building, which was the main reason for this build.

This black robot was built according to the constraint - use only one colour. It was the easiest of the three, as I was still allowed to use symmetry and repetition. It has made me think about making some darker mocs, and helped me think about the use of holes in bricks as greebles or details.

This science robot was built according to the constraint - use no two pieces the same. I upped the challenge by not allowing colour as a differential (i.e. once I'd used a grill I couldn't use another grill in another colour). I had to find ways of imposing a semblance of symmetry by using pieces like the thruster for the body.

This maintenance robot was built according to the constraint use no two pieces of the same colour. This was really hard to do, and I made upward of 15 robots before I had one I was even marginally happy with. I would set this as a challenge for anyone wanting to do a quick yet difficult build.

I like the black bot I may eventually make a lime MOC for a big challenge...

Really like them all. I see the 'balance issue’ might be a problem. Love the multi coloured maintenance robot. I would like to build something for that category.

Quoting Scott Allen Nice. I like that you did this to show others the possibility. The chart on no two colors is great. ~cheers
It seemed crazy not to have any creations in the group, and seeing as I set the thing up, I thought it my job to give a sort of instructional intro. I'm hoping to see someone build some better bots than mine soon - or anything else for that matter.

Quoting StoveTop Creator To me the 'constraint - use no two pieces the same' seems the most challenging to build within. If you were building any type of creature/android 'balance' would seem to me to be the first goal? You seem to have achieved this. Anyhoo, each contraint brings new issues to bear1 This is what makes this type of building a real learning experience... and probably very frustrating for me! :)
What made the colour one actually the most challenging was that it also limited your number of pieces. In some colours you only have a handful of pieces and perhaps only one or two which are useful in terms of the type of moc you are building.

Quoting Tim C Very interesting, David. The first two are my favorite. The, "Not using the same color more than once," idea has had me scratching my head since you posted the group, so seeing it executed has solved some of the mystery for me. Nice job getting the ball rolling on this new group.
Thanks Tim. The black robot showed a lot of promise and the way towards a new aesthetic for me, which was kind of the point of doing these experiments. I'd love to see someone else build a no two colours the same robot, its a lot of fun, more like a logic puzzle or suchlike than a normal Lego building experience. Although my robot using this constraint is not the most appealing creation ever, I've certainly never seen anything like it before. And I'm itching to have another go to see if I can do better next time.
