He had his orders. He turned and strode out of the room. The automatic doors clanged shut loudly behind him. He marched proudly down the corridor, the note tucked into his helmet. Past the training area he went; he could here the shots ringing out from the rookies assault rifles, followed by Commander Clift’s shouts of either approval or disappointment.
He sprinted into a lift as the doors were closing.
Callum was in there and he took one look at the wide grin on his face and slapped him on the back cheerily. Callum left the lift at the next stop.
He listened to the cheesy lift music until it was replaced by a gut-wrenching sound of metal scraping against metal. The lift screeched to a stop and the lights flickered and died. He was thrown from side to side as he pulled his revolver from its holster and slung it into a tactical position with a flashlight.
He swung the gun around the enclosed space but nothing had changed.
Then, as quickly as it had begun, it was over. The lift glided smoothly down its shaft and the power returned to the lights and, to his annoyance, the speakers. The lift reached a stop and he walked out.
He looked around the corridor and saw that the same thing must have happened there too.
He walked down a flight of steps to the lower most level of The Calm Before The Storm then moved along the passage, the doors sliding open eerily as he past, then closing again.
He came to a storage room and tried the handle of the door. Typical, he thought, the one door on the ship with no automatic capability. He forced it open and read the note.
He looked for the package it described but another one caught his eye. It was not unlike the others, metal and new. This one was brown, rotting cardboard and something was seeping out of it.
It looked like some kind of gas; smoke maybe. Dark purple smoke. Suddenly the lid popped off the box and the smoke filled the room. He blacked out.
A short time later and news of the smoke had spread, as had the smoke itself. On the bridge people were running about wildly.
"No one leave this room!" Iadsgb yelled. “Get the other leaders up here NOW!” he shouted to an officer. “And Biosnake too!” he added as the man ran from the room.
"Sir," asked an officer, "What’s happening?"
"I don't know. But I bet I know who it is.” He replied. “How many have we lost?" he called to Jamie at the other side of the bridge.
"The only confirmed loss was a young soldier in the hold." The second in command called back.
Iadsgb gritted his teeth, knowing he had sent the boy on the mission that had taken his life. Just then Stallion, Fixer, a new commander by the name a Rogue and Captain Biosnake walked in. “Lock the doors!” Iadsgb shouted.
“Eve?!” he then bellowed for his personal assassin looking around and suddenly she was there next to him causing him to jump back in surprise. “Don’t do that.” He grumbled and she grinned cheekily.
Jamie and Callum ran up to them.
“It’s The OvaSeers isn’t it sir?” Callum checked.
“Yes. It has to be.” Iadsgb replied. “What happened?”
“We’re not sure yet but it was defiantly an attack.” Jamie answered. “But why?”
Iadsgb bit his lip.
Rogue heard a hissing sound and looked round. "Sir!" He yelled as he found the source of the noise.
"Oh god." groaned Iadsgb.
Deep purple smoke was seeping into the room under the door.
"That's not possible. These doors are airtight.” Callum gasped.
Iadsgb answered Jamie’s earlier question. "They're at war."
He ran to the window, followed by his comrades.
A massive ship with ornately carved wooden armour had just jetted out of hyperspace. There seemed to be no engines, only purple smoke issuing from the back.
Iadsgb thought of The Desolation and of the other leaders. He pulled out his blasters. “PREPARE FOR BATTLE!” he bellowed and at the same time the first of the OvaSeers started appearing onboard.
“Open the doors!” he shouted.
All over both The Desolation and The Calm Before the Storm, OvaSeers were appearing in clouds of smoke and attacking the F.I.S..
Callum fired his blaster into an approaching OvaSeer. The two bullets hit him square in the head and chest. He reeled back in pain and a third bullet hit one of his comrades.
Stallion blasted three rounds into a control panel that blew up a group of OvaSeers that were drifting towards him in a haze of black and purple smoke.
Suddenly he was blown of his feet with a sound almost like a gunshot and backwards onto the floor.
An OvaSeer waded menacingly through a cloud of smoke towards him. He was holding a long staff and wielding a gleaming sword.
Stallion growled at him. "Die freak!" and slung a throwing knife at him but the OvaSeer casually knocked it away with a flick of his hand.
"You will kill me? Really?” The OvaSeer sneered. “You have fired six shots. You have just one left. One bullet will not kill me." He turned away but then Stallion shouted,
"Ya think?!" And fired at the closest window. The glass shattered and the cocky OvaSeer along with a couple more were sucked into the vast unknown,
before smoke covered the gap and another, powerful looking OvaSeer drifted in.
"My name is Spillicof. And you must go to my master." The smoke engulfed them and when it cleared they had vanished.
