Rockin Rory Spaceman and the Astro-noughts are a band formed of the members of the Outer Reach Research Team. Primarily at first a Devo cover band the group have formed their own unique sci-fi straight-edge sound (being spacemen, only a straight edge ethic fits with their tough physical regime). Commander Rory leader of the band takes his vocal style from Leonard Cohen, whispering sweet melancholy space lullabies coated in gravel. Simon on bass wears his instrument low in homage to Mr Peter Hook. Sam on synth aspires to the high works of 70s Jarre. Ben on drums is simply called the robot.
This is my entry to the out of your comfort zone contest moc-off round. The theme - humour. My talented opponent is Sir Balamorgineas (http://www.mocpages.com/home.php/40411)

Score = 3. Nice job on the build. I'm not crazy about the classic space figs for the band members though. |

Cool! I like your ideas for the instruments and the stage is really nice and detailed too. Great idea with the retro minifigs by the way :-) |

Hmmm, the building is pretty good, but the figs could use some work. Score = 3.
Thanks, I'm not sure what you mean by the figs need more work; the joke is that they are classic space mini-figs, playing late 70s early 80s lunar rock. |

Haha, great stuff! I'm guessing this is not a case of 'In space no one can hear you rock...' ;)
More a case of who needs soundproofing when the nearest residential area is several light year away. |

As nice as this is, your creations don't reflect the drawings you showed me. I desperately want to see you make something twisted. It's gotten to the point where I search for it in anything you make, the drum set looks like it's about to devour mister Ben.
Thanks for this Cath, you won't find the artist David Alexander Smith in my Lego at the moment. I've thought about doing something similar to my paintings with the bricks but have so far kind of resisted this (there was one piece which I didn't post of a seated figure holding two tiny dancing figures which might have filled your brief). I think the pure escapism of the Lego is what makes me happy at the moment. Although I have started drawing again, which I haven't done for a while (I'll take some scans and show you if you like). I'm still avoiding the chapter of a book I'm supposed to have finished though, which is bad of me. |

This is Great! All the insturments look amazing along with the stage. There is something about seeing classic spacemen in a band that just had to make me laugh!

This is great, David. Well done on the instruments. Is this some kind of reunion tour of dead spacemen? It reminds of an odd 80's band. Excellent.
I was thinking of bands like Devo, Man or Astroman/Servotron as the template for the group; perhaps they sound a bit more like Black Strobe when they play. Image them rockin out in the mess hall of the orbiting Venus research station. |

Haha, Very cute. The drums are obviosly meant for looks not playing, although it would have been nice to have them facing inward.
4/5
Don't worry, the drums are adjustable (attached with robot arms) and can be set for playing. Clearly this is the publicity shot ;). |
