I was assigned the genre 'landscape' for this contest. A complete nightmare for me, being limited by pieces as to what sort of landscape I might make, and by experience regarding techniques. I don't think this is that bad an attempt.

Scratches add character. Who ever saw a pristine lighthouse anyways. Kids these days! |

Some of those pieces are scratched, almost all are scratched on the light house, and some on the water. Your score = 3.
I'm almost 40, and most of these pieces are from my childhood (read my homepage intro); in fact the lighthouse is mainly built from red bricks which were part of my very first set given to me for Xmas 1977 - it's not surprising they carry their scars. |

Score = 2. Don't mean to be the tough judge here, but there are a few things you could do to improve this MOC. First, eliminate the grille pieces and use cheese slopes instead on the rocks. They would give it a much more jagged, rocky look. Or at the very least use 1x2 grey tiles. Then you could also eliminate the 1x1 round stud in the water and the green one on the rocks. They just look funny because they are upside down when the ones by the lighthouse are right side up. Choose one or the other in such a small landscape. And everyone else already mentioned the front of the water. You would want the studs facing out. Overall though, it's a nice coherent build.
I agree with most of your comments. I would however note I couldn't fix most if them. I'm working with a tiny collection, and most times it's the best ir rd for the job rather than the perfect piece. I posted an appendix of images of my collection in this moc if you want to get a sense of what I mean http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/318921. Don't get me wrong, your comments are really helpful. |

No not me. Saw your like appear though. I suspect you used a word that needed to be moderated, and the comment will appear later; this has happened before. |

What a lovely little scene! I can just hear the waves lapping on the shore ;-)
Thanks, that means a lot coming from such an impressive builder as yourself. |

I love this simple and clean build. Good luck. Limited pieces = more creative building. In fact I really enjoy building with limited pieces. You would make an excellent alternative builder. @ Brody - looking forward to yours.
I've got my eye on a bit of alternative building - watch this space. |

I love lighthouses! I used to use one for a demo when I taught chemistry... perhaps I'll post mine now?!
Love to see it, and why does it not surprise me at all that you taught chemistry. |

Nice work David. The transition from cliff to beach to water is great. I like the cheese slopes in the water. It adds texture and where light houses are needed typically isn't smooth water. Good Luck. Hopefully I will be posting mine tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks Brody, I'll keep an eye out for your piece later - I'm expecting good things. |

That's a cool vignette with nice landscape and a cool lighthouse. The combination of SNOT and studs up design works really well. Great job! :-))
Thanks, getting a smooth transition between the studs up and snot was the trickiest part of this. I tried to do a lot of off setting so you don't easily notice the transition. |

Nice work, David. I admit that this is one of the few times that I didn't recognize you work. There not being a cockpit and all. The overall look of this MOC is very convincing. I will always be impressed by your SNOT work. Some pretty nice rocks and I like the little waves in the water. Good luck in the contest.
Thanks as always. |

Not bad at all. It's a simple but clean build. I like it! The only thing I would change would be the water. I don't think the cheese slopes are really needed. I would also have the studs of the water facing out, not the opposite way. Other than that, good work!
-LB Senior
I was undecided about the cheeses myself, perhaps you are right. The studs inwards was a pure piece compromise (I only have inverted tan slopes and no pieces in blue or tan for inverting ahead of the point where beach meets water). I agree totally, In an ideal world the studs would be the other way around. |

Nice snot on the rocks and water. But there is not a lot there besides the light house. Maybe you could add trees or a fishing boat out on the sea.
Fishing boats are a good idea. Next time perhaps. |
