Seismovore, Titan of the Diamond Wastes - Somniferrian Terrestrial
Welcome back, all to the ongoing Somniferrian Archive Initiative. Here is our newest discovery, a denizen of the arid central climatological zone (designated the 'Diamond Wastes' by our newest batch of translations); this equatorial band, territorially the largest, due to its length, had hidden a massive, disturbing secret...
About this creation

...the skyscraping colossus known as 'Seismovore'. This name was recovered from the translated archive dug from a ruin deep beneath the equatorial sands of the planet's main continental landmass; a city the data designated as Sivatagi Vros - now, no more than blasted black glass, sand, and skeletal jutting girders that once crowned now-buried skyscrapers.

We must report with some embarrassment that... well...

...our scientists... can't determine how BIG it is.

It's far too dangerous to view except from stationary orbiting platforms, and the creature's anatomy seems to be exuding some form of distorting field, baffling sensor data from even amplified probes...

...it's not Stealth tech - far from it; the distortions are hardly unnoticeable, like typhoon-scale radiostrophic STORMS. They broadcast the creature's approach even into the upper atmosphere, visible without telemetry even from space.

To compound matters, the numbers keep ...changing.

Increasing.

...Even as data streams real-time.

*thumps*
*muffled, off-mic*: Are you SURE, Nigel? These numbers can't be right ...can it really be growing that fast?

Additionally, the monster (and the anomaly field) disappears and reappears altogether frequently, which should be impossible. Until we realized that, barring visual contact, thermals and magnetic holoscopy, we had ignored SEISMIC telemetry.

It burrows, you see.

Horribly far.
Horribly fast.

We've read the records through.
They had no warning.

By the time they realized the city was under attack, it was already too late. Somniferrians had long-since retreated below the surface as the War of Ancients raged on, but even their underground bunkers hadn't escaped Seismovore's appetite.

Sivatagi Vros never stood a chance.

And it was only the beginning...

The beast was already megalithic. And it was very, very hungry.

It is clear that, while the creature's primary nutrition is derived from Silicon (namely sand, and refined silicates, like delicious industrial glass)...

...nothing beats a hot meal.

Beginning 4thwall Commentary: Welcome back, all! Thanks for looking, as always, and feel free to Rate/Comm/Crit. Here's my newest Somniferrian: the Seismovore!

4thWC: Knowing I'd created lifeforms for the majority of the planet's other climates, I needed a dominant lifeform for the Somniferrian deserts: we needed an Alpha Predator for the scorching sands, something that could thrive where all else suffered. Seismovore was my answer. I thought about what it might mean to have a creature that lived on the only resource the desert could the truly supply - the SAND itself.

An inexhaustible Silicon FEAST.

4thWC: For body structure, I wanted something that evoked pure Brute. Very Dinosaur. Lots of shoulder and upper-bodymass. Mastiff. Bull. That sort of thing.

Digging etymology was an idea present at the beginning, so I wanted big foreclaws. Burrowing presents a problem with Energy Absorption, though, and the cosmic radiation is the staple for all Somniferrian biology. So I couldn't have Seismo just dig deep, hunker down, and sleep beneath the sands when dormant.

SO: I came up with a colorscheme for an animal that would have to use an entire OASIS as camoflage; snoozing while soaking up rays.

4thWC: I'd been wanting to try a green MOC, but this biology would need other colors: the yellows of reflected sands, greens for sheltering vegetation, the orange-trans were meant to be evocative of the unusual clays of Somniferrian shale and buttes, like the Mesas of the Grand Canyon and Yosemite.

4thWC: Even selecting this scheme, I ran out of pieces I wanted for purpose after purpose. As I've disclosed in the Comments section, there were many things about this Build that frustrated. Least of all was weight, and that was a big issue (but more about that in the Metrics section).

Mostly, it was about running out of the COLOR I wanted for certain parts.
Either I hadn't enough, or Lego doesn't mold in that color.
Endlessly. Lots of teeth grinding.

4thWC: A Color version of that mean ole' Teaser Poster. Wanted to show you enough to not be boring, but not give too much away.

4thWC: Some basic Metrics. That middle number's not a typo. Yep - he's basically the size of a Housecat. =)

Now, is that a big deal? HECK, no. Hundreds of you have built MOCs that large, or bigger. Why was it a big deal for me on Seismovore? ...He's bloody HEAVY. And at seemingly every turn, the parts (remaining in my supply) that I could have used as proper supports would invariably force YET ANOTHER COLOR into the mix. Ug. There goes the idea. I didn't want the Silver or Grey, but I wanted the rounded pieces, and needed pistons to support the rear legs. So, in they went. Much to my dismay.

4thWC: For the sake of promoting stable stances, I will be seeking some green bits. And for the first time in a long while, I think I'll be rebuilding a MOC. I just can't live with the open gaps, even though I WANTED the MOC to have a brutallistic, crude, and overall unfinished look; the results didn't please me much - particularly in the limbs.

So, storywise, I left myself an 'out'. =)

Our research, looking for a weakness, has grudgingly concluded that, like the Carcharodon carcharias, the 'Great White Shark' of Sol III, the beast is a creature of simple, yet sinister compulsion:

It destroys.

It consumes.

It grows.

And it's awfully good at all three.

The more it eats, the larger, the hungrier, it becomes. Growth by proportional Mass Conversion. Like a snowball rolling down a winter hillside that never, ever ends.

The question this poses, then, voiced nervously by one researcher here, is thus: Where will this end?...

Will it?...

4thWC: And that will serve as justification, should I figure out a better way to re-construct the legs and forearms, hopefully with greater incorporation of the colors I wanted, rather than substitutions.4thWC:

4thWC: The length (of the forearms), I liked. Very Leonine. But I still wanted a massively 'muscled' shoulder haunch - like the Mastiff morphology. And a raised dorsal ridge, like a boar's.

And while I may be able to innovate a way around it in the future, for now my only gripe is that the friction b.n.s. joints just aren't resistant enough to support that extra bulk without having to force a lean onto the rear haunches to stand on its own. Not good enough for a permanent fix. Revisions are due.

I'll noodle upon it awhile.

4thWC: While simple, these talons are all mod'ed to points from the HF 7156 Corroder set. I liked the flexibility in this simple joint set. Made a good set of claws for a creature specializing in digging.

4thWC: Except for the carapace from Ben10, I was pleased with the, admittedly blatant =), homage to Godzilla I was paying here, with the dorsal collection panels and spine array.

For that piece, I think I might be able to arrange a satisfactory paint job to obscure that horrid pastel green and omnitrix. We'll see what I can drum up.

4thWC: Originally, there were little 'hatches' to enclose the green trans elements, but I had to remove them to reduce weight. If able to reinforce the arms, then I might return them to enclosures.

4thWC: Here's another location where plating had to be removed to reduce weight, not for the leg assembly, but to close the gaps from the navel area all the way back to the second tail segment. Alas.

4thWC: The yellow vents were actually there for a Story element (but I liked the way they looked) that went like this - and brace yourself here for some Somniferrian Pseudo-Science =P):

While clearly a beast in every sense, our researchers had to grudgingly admire the Seismovore's elegance when they discovered the specialized adaptation it made somewhere in its Evolution.

Cosmic radiation, collated in the large dorsal sphere shown, is focused at the molecular level into microwave pulses, the alternating polarization relayed into specialized crystalline wafer layers within the orb, resulting in supercondensed vibrations in giant thoracic resonating chambers, like the pipes of a Cathedral.

These pulses are conducted down hollow bones in the arms, and into the solid biosteel talon arrays on each forepaw, like gigantic tuning forks.

These dispersals are released as almost solid sonic super-pulse wavelengths, right through the ventral talon surface, erupting in concentric blasts concentrated enough to create spontaneous seismic anomalies: Super-quakes..

Cruelly-efficient, custom earthquakes. Focused like no natural event could ever be.

The monster seems to prefer its meals pulverized.

4thWC: A full Dorsal top-down view.

Slamming its giant talons down, the Seismovore literally shakes targeted solid matter into dust.

And then, the feast begins.

Silicates are digested immediately, waste ablutions eliminated, the beast's exponential hunger drives it ceaselessly.

Certain factions within our staff have made inevitable comparisons to the cranial structures of Dominael (see: Dominael, indexed archive), but any evidence is purely circumstantial, no conclusive link has surfaced, at the time of this report. The nascent savagery shared by both entities, however, is undeniable.

Perhaps there is a link to the Tenebrian half of Dominael, but if so, then this behemoth is little more than a mindless brute, utterly bereft of the cold and calculated intelligence that Ancient possesses. It's base needs are all it knows.

...not that this makes it any less lethal, evidently.

4thWCDefinitely wanted that barrel chest-look, to emphasize the smallness of the head - a nod to Saurian etymology. Was thinking, Ceratosaur, Godzilla.

That disproportion to show how SMALL the creature's brain likely is.

Not much room in there for anything beside bloodlust, rage, and hunger...

The lumbering giant does not display much in terms of agility, either.

But when one swipe reaches that far, when one step covers that much distance...

...does the monster really need it?

4thWCA simple profile shot mid-stride...

4thWC...in both background colors. I liked the serrated, Japanese-Monster-Movie-looking spikiness for the dorsal ridge.

Our team was lucky enough to witness the use of a secondary Somniferrian Radiation Conversion Ability (dubbed 'Somniogenesis' by one of our staff members with a dry sense of humor, pardon our little joke - unfortunately, the term caught on quickly. It's being used alot around the Lab, now): after sufficient charge from the main absorption battery on the dorsal peak (shown charging, here)...

...the creature deploys a pair of armatures capable of ranged attack, much like the retractable blade arms used by the Umbravores . Their presence is rather baffling, seeing the threat this leviathan poses solely with its Melee prowess.

Perhaps even this monster has a natural enemy in the Emberhawkes , should they harry the beast in sufficient numbers to pose a threat?

The pods produce concentrated beams through Somniogenesis (again, pardon our use of the slang, but the term has proven useful) capable of medium-range punishing blasts to airborne foes.

4thWC A profile shot, blasters aloft, and mace-like tail able to swing forward with crushing force. I imagined it using the seismic blast to disintegrate buildings, then a single tail-slam to bring his powdered feast raining to the ground in glittering piles.

4thWC Striding, deployed and effaced.

It seems the creature spends most of its ravenous life on the move, always in search of its next meal. Roaming the surface, soaking up radiance from Lumen Prime whenever possible, and burrowing with astonishing strength when spotting prey.

Preferring the chaos its approach invariably inspires, it prefers to arise from beneath prey already wild with fear, gleefully bringing the city down, cutting off escape.

From there, all that remains is sweeping up an easy meal.

Woe, unto Somniferria of Old.

4thWC 3/4 effaced, with titles.

One wonders whether or not it would have been better, to perish under the trod of the great Angels, as they made their War during the end-days...

...or to wait, cowering in the dark in their last strongholds, as the rumble of something huge grew nearer, and the walls began to crack...

4thWC ----------'Happy Halloween, Ladies.'------

4thWC And finally, by request, here's one specifically unedited shot, above (admittedly one of my favorites), to get an idea what it looked like before Photoshoppery. Thus was the 'Before'

...and, below is the 'After':

4thWC Well, that's it! You've reached the end! Thank you so much for your Feedback thus far.

Edits are already underway for the next Somniferrian, look out for the teaser this weekend, with time allowing; hopefully, it will be making an appearance by the next one. Summing up, I think this MOC is my strongest candidate thus far for future revisions. Who knows how this beast will change as it grows? =)

Thanks again, and Cheers!

Dave I am most pleased you like it. I absolutely DO intend to create more Somniferrian Terrestrials, but the one terrain I haven't populated is her Oceans, and am a little stumped how to pull off a certain idea I have. I'll see what can be done. Thanks for the review!

Quoting Clever Crowe Stephano: (sorry about randomly choosing one of as-always-excellent-MOCs to reply but..) consider your Invite to the 2012 Bio Cup the HIGHEST honor, but must decline, and wanted to explain WHY before I did. I never make deadlines, Sir. I'd LOVE to try, but hardly ever manage to get more done than a MOC-a-month; just too much going on in AFOL-Land for me to do more while still being a Mgr. @ my biz, a good Dad, and good Husband. I will watch with awe and wonder EACH and EVERY entry, but must cheer from the sidelines. THANK YOU for considering, me, Sir, and CHEERS!!!
That's rather aproppriete since it was I the one who invited you to this competition. I planned on making a formal invitation to you, but you beat me to it,hehehe. First off, let me thank you for your comments in some of my creations, specially on Vassadar. You're most kind. Also I can simpatize with your condition, I'm not a father nor a husband, but what I have been lately is without time, hehehe. But even under such circumstances I urge you to reconsider. You are quite a skilled builder, with some impressive work here, and I must say it wouldn't take you much effort to pass through the first couple of rounds. Perhaps if you take off the photoshop and story stage of these mocs for the competition, you would save up some time. Because the quantity of writing and photshop on them is big and I know that that's a great part of your "moc posting" process. Also,as the mass progresses in the contest, the more time you will be granted, and I really think you have what it takes to get to the last couple of rounds. It would be an honor to have you with us! If you really can't make it, then I guess we'll meet on the battlefield, I'm sure that you would be able to participate on smaller contests. Quoting Noah the Lego Apprentice Yet another "clever" MOC from Clever Crowe! Although there's just one thing I gotta know, how long (on average I guess) does it take to make one of these guys?
Thanks for the Review, Noah. Before I answer, let me qualify by admitting I'm a SLOW Builder (Daddy Duty, Work, Life, etc ;P), but I think Seismo was tinkered with for a couple of weeks, irregularly on-n-off. On average, well, depending on Size - LONGER, mostly (the MOC I'm editing right now took about a month). Sometimes, you can crank one out fast (Ember was about 3 days), but mostly, I Tinker Over Time. Cheers!

Quoting Ro Garcia As always Crowe, another master build here. I do find it strange that, knowing your not a purist like a number of us, didn`t paint over the color parts that you didn`t like. Then again, it`s always best to figure out the best structure before pretting it up. Hope everything works out.
While I'm not averse to Paintmodding at all, I will only resort to it under three basic conditions: 1) if I HATE the color the original WOULD have injected into an otherwise intact colorscheme 2) had a color in mind, but don't own, can't wait for, or can't afford the real thing, and 3) if the Piece doesn't exist in the color I had in mind. Pretty simple. For Seismo, as I've said; I wasn't crazy about many of the original PARTS I used, but the colors were essentially an Oasis palate: clay, sand, vegetation - the only anomaly is the same shared by all Somniferrians: the trans Somniogenesis elements. Cheers for the visit, Sir!

Lol, my new favorite Comment. =P Thank you, Sir. I was inspired by one of the late '90's Godzilla flicks from Toho, Ltd., on the blast, pulverize, and vacuum technique. Vs. Mechagodzilla I think. Anyway, listen: I CAN DEFINITELY USE that Pic you sent. It's in good shape. Give me a lil time, I'll slide it into the set of Edits I'm working on already. Then we need to make a way fore me to e-mail it to you. Wish there was a better way INSIDE MOCpages, but, oh well. THX again!

Quoting Talonmagic ~ Oh, I totally agree on the non-purist thing, it's just on dominael I up to that point had seen a FULL bionicle MOC painted, so I guess that's what kinda threw me off. I'm a non-purist myself, So I know what you're talking about. I SOMETIMES find hardcore purists kinda..... well, I don't want to say annoying, but that's kinda what it is. Anyway, great work, and go NON-PURISTS!!
I can respect that. At this point, I kinda obey Function; if the situation dictates, I paint single Pieces (that way increasing the chances they COULD be re-used). Again - stick to what you LOVE, Sir. If you stop having fun, you're prolly doing something wrong. I respect ALL Walks Of MOCs: all philosophies with what we do have their place. Cheers! =)

Quoting Chopperskull Jon Some places he looks sloppy and skinny, but this is a really monstorus moc, and I love it ! Looks like something you'd see in Infamous 2 ! :D Really Amazing !
You know Chopper, I hadn't thought of that, but the scrapmonsters from the first game have alot in common with the look I wanted. Good insight, m8. Cheers!

Quoting Yuri Fassio I love how your MOCs keep getting more complex, without being reduced to unplayable sculptures.
Yuri, I fight with that concept all the time, Sir. >>>O.G.R.E. has come the closest; And that's probably why I keep eyeballing him and chuckling maniacally. His days are numbered. LOVE your new ArcheoGenis "Zector", and I owe you a review, Sir. Still trying to catch up, and am trying to be fair by Reviewing in the order they were received. CHEERS!

How did I miss this? Dang, you sure have a lot of toxic reapas, but I suppose you've justified that :D Amazing as usual, somehow you made lime and yellow look good, something I've never managed to pull off (and a lot of other people as well!) My dino's head is from some stupid old dino sets I got when I was a wee lad, here: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?S=6720-1 First time I've managed to use any of that crap, too! :D

As always Crowe, another master build here. I do find it strange that, knowing your not a purist like a number of us, didn`t paint over the color parts that you didn`t like. Then again, it`s always best to figure out the best structure before pretting it up. Hope everything works out.

Awhile ago I asked if you could make me a poster. It took me forever to give you a picture, nut I finally got one I'd like to see you work your photoshop magic on. http://www.mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?mocid=321827&id=/user_images/68318/1336077833m It doesn't matter what you do for the background, just so long as it looks cool.

Quoting Owl The Owl INCREDIBLE!
Thanks, Owl! Appreciated =)
Quoting Daniel Jani Really amazing!!! His arms are very nice, I like how you use this Toa Lewa masks. Try to limit colors on his body. Good job, again!!!
Thanks also, Daniel. I will gladly switch out a number of bits, if they become available in proper colors. ;) (hint-hint, LEGO, if you're listening). Even I don't feel brave enough to paint Lime Green. But I might do a custom Dry-Brush job on that Omnitrix dorsal plate... hmmm.

Quoting Huss Q. Varna Lookout, Mechagodzilla!! - AAUUUUUGGHH! - Pure city-stompin' fun. - Huss Q.
My Favorite Comment thus far =). The Story on this fella holds a few neat comparison, there - and I've already admitted I'm a huge Gojira Fan. Cheers!!!
Quoting Talonmagic ~ Amazing!! I love how all of your creations have that almost organic look to them, something most of us can't acheive. Great work all around, espically since u didn't use paint this time, last time that was kinda cheating on Dominael
Lol, sorry Talon - I'm NOT a Lego Purist. I've been told I'm an 'Innovist Rebel' (whatever that means =P). I think I'm just a Pragmatist; it's YOUR LEGO... it should do what you need it, how you need it, and when (NO ONE has mentioned the Mod'ed claws on Seismo's front paws yet - not ONE =) and I thought it would be the FIRST issue anyone had with it: ironic, eh?... I Mod, I Paint, etc., when the situation seems to call for it - I'm not trying to rock the boat, just trying to MOC with a sense of freedom, and I fully encourage anyone else to do the same. FUN is the name of the game.
Quoting Chronos Omega I love the sheer size of the MOC! However, I don't really like all the colors like white, silver, trans-orange, and grey that seem to be just thrown into the mix. And also, the head is freakishly small. :P ;)
Thx for the Feedback, Chronos - again, Parts Availability forced my hand. Trans bits will feature largely into ALL my Somniferrians- Terrestrial or Ancient, alike: they represent Radiation cores (storage and conversion) but the other colors used will abide by whatever Function their MOC requires (camouflage, intentional threat displays, 'good' or 'evil' thematics, etc.) This brute is a creature of wholly aggressive purity. It's my hope that by tomorrow evening I'll be able to add much of that Story to subtext the Shots. Thanks, Sir!

Quoting Jacob Manahan This is really cool, the multicolored color scheme gives him a very alien look! Overall well done moc.
Thanks Jacob, appreciated. Wasn't s'posed to be so many colors, but as the 4thwall will spell out, 'hitting Parts Attrition pretty bad.
Quoting Max W. urm... HOW many legs does it have? I honestly couldn't tell for the first 20 pictures, and I'm only half sure it's 4... I feel like you're doing a lot of the same though- lots of ridiculously big creatures I personally would like to see a series of smaller beasties or a band of mercenaries, something with multiple people/beings involved.
It's a quadriped, sorry that doesn't show clearly enough in most of the shots. Yep - I build big, sticking to what I enjoy most, essentially. I tip my hat with great respect to folks like Yuri who can build across the gamut, but think that only practice will get me there, personally. Who knows what future projects hold - we'll see, eh? Thanks for the Feedback.
Quoting Pure Epicness Meh, not your best. I mean it's too colorful and when I saw that omnitrix on his back I was ready to shoot my computer.
Know what?- I don't think it's my best, either - but I still like alot about it. There ARE too many colors, but as the Lore bits will hopefully explain, I am hitting some of my supply limits. I wanted something bright and aggressive in coloring, borrowing from Insect color threats, and most of my choices stem from that. As for the Omnitrix; I wanted a rounded torso plate in green for the anterior dorsal area, and the only other one I have is on the BELLY =P (had great placements for the hidden technic pins) so: there you have it. Ben10 to the rescue - no need to Shoot Your PC. Thanks for the honest Feedback anyway - don't be afraid to be clear, and thank you for the respectful way you did so. Counts for alot, in my book. Cheers.

Quoting Gale Winthrope Well I see that Hero Factory 4.0 has been good to you. This is truly amazing, as are all your other mocs. Masterful job!
It really has. I'm not an HF-hater, me- lots of great bits in there. Thank you for the Feedback, Cheers!
Quoting Rennoc ~ You did a great job at giving it that organic look that is hard to achieve in mocs-- especially giant ones.
Thanks, Rennoc - I wanted this one to look blocky and crude, but couldn't help pouring in some muscle-shapes to give it that Mastiff look: more on that later. THANK you!
Quoting Cody G Very nice! I don't really like the thin, simple lower forelegs, but overall this is a very good-looking and well-built MOC.
Thank you for the honest Feedback, Cody. I have some very particular feelings about this one that I'll share as time permits, but there IS a bit of Lore-connected explanation that will hopefully cover this to the satisfaction of most. Love your Work, Sir. Cheers!

SOME of that Look is intentional - apologies that the MOC had to go up before the Lore was inset; I just ran outta time. Hopefully the scripts will explain this crude, brutish design a bit more. Cheers on the Feedback!
Quoting Dragonmaster 1027 Wow!
Ty, ty. Appreciate the Rate-n'-Comm!
Quoting Norrak The Last Toa Exelent as all ways. How many Toxic Reapas do you own? Can there be more pitures that aren't edited?
1)Thank you! 2) Too many. =) He's a cheap fig, and included many MOC-worthy Bits. 3) There were, and are. Again, something the texts will explain. The uploads you see represent the set after ALOT of culling. Cheers!

I feel like you're doing a lot of the same though- lots of ridiculously big creatures made with equal parts hero factory and bionicle. I personally would like to see a series of smaller beasties or a band of mercenaries, something with multiple people/beings involved.
