Steampunk Civil War: Retreat at the Old Mill
What if, near the end of the American civil war, the confederates had deployed a brand new super weapon? One that was such a game changer that it turned the course of the war? I give you the Confederate Airship Valkyrie!
About this creation
Bricks Used: 6938
Acknowledgement:
Anyone who made a steampunk zeppelin or walker. I looked at all of them when making mine.
The Zeppelin is stolen from my own build: the Blimp Bomber. This particular construct has now seen a lot of mileage since it was also used in the USS Anchorage: Submarine of the Future.
Background photo:
I got lazy and used the same photo I used for Ishii Castle: Building Instructions in HD.

CSA Valkyrie is a deadly 8 gunned monster, capable to out flanking enemy positions and raining death down on them from above. It can also go in for a low pass and deploy the two deadly War-Striders attached to the stern.

Captain Johnstone at the helm directs the battle.

War-striders come equipped with either a Gatling gun or a flamethrower.

The valiant last stand of Sergeant Blackwater and his bravest soldiers.

This was my first attempt to use explosion effects in LDD. I think it turned out ok, but I'm open to ideas about how to do this better. The whole project started out as a doodle using technic pieces that resulted in the war-strider legs, and then just sort of exploded from there. There were a lot of awesome steampunk builds on the pages last week, so I think that may have influenced my desire to make one of my own. There is also a distinct lack of any creations from the civil war era in the US... odd.

Cool! Though the airship is cool my favorite part of this has got to be those small walkers. They look deadly! The scene is well done too, with load of details. Great work :-)

I understand. The Union already had cool gadgets (USS Monitor for example) so you decided to give the other side one. Still a great build!

Quoting Dawn of Greatness Very nice build! I love the design! My only complaint is that this is defending slavery...
Oh no! My intent was certainly not to promote slavery! I just wanted to do an alternate history MOC with a steam punk feel and the civil war is a historical period that is highly underrepresented in LEGO creations. Besides, the union has Abraham Lincoln, vampire hunter, on their side!

I really enjoyed this build. Your landscape was great, your floating ship was unique, and the walkers added an extra treat. Excellent job here.

Quoting Matthew McCall Kind of silly, but it's really well made. Excellent job!
Yeah, this was definitely meant to be a more lighthearted and simple build. I like to alternate complex and serious builds with experimental and fun ones. That gives me a chance to expand my repertoire and rest a bit. This particular build was used as a chance to experiment with some landscaping and effect techniques as well as play with technic parts. They will all come in handy for my upcoming projects.

Quoting Brody Allen Nice work. I like the detail of the battle scene. The walkers are a great touch. As if seeing a flying ship come after you wouldn't be enough! I would change the head of the figurehead to a gray piece to match the outfit so it doesn't look like a person. I also haven't seen many explosions made from blocks. They arer most often editied in so your design looks really good.
I think you are right, the head on the figure head was meant to match the color of the arms, as if it were made with silver and gold plating, but you can't see the arms, so the effect doesn't really work. Thanks for your comment on the explosion.
