A 1970 era photo shows Shamrock's Ladder, Citizen's engine and now defunct Union Engine Company's engine at a structure fire in downtown Ticlaw.

During their monthly meeting this past Thursday night, members of Shamrock Ladder Company voted to retire their 71 year old ladder truck. The 1941 American LaFrance 85’ aerial arrived late in 1941, and has participated in nearly every major fire in the past 71 years. Shamrock assistant fire Chief Gary Dunnett, said that, "we have kept old truck is in excellent condition, but over the past couple years insurance liabilities have sky rocketed because of its lack of safety devices for the firemen."
"The truck will remain in active service until the fire department can acquire a replacement. After that, the old girl will be retired from active service. We plan to keep the truck for parades, benefits, musters, and for demonstrations."
Dunnett did say they are in close communication with the RNT Fire Apparatus company to help in locating a replacement. "We just don’t have the funds in our department to purchase a brand new aerial, which can cost anywhere from $500,000 up to near $1 million." he said, "We hope to locate a suitable used truck that will meet our needs."
Other company officials said it could take up to a year or more to purchase another ladder truck, so in the meantime, the "LaFrance" will be maintained and used on a normal basis, and stand ready to on the front lines of the next conflagration.

71 years is a long and faithful time for the truck to serve. I'm sure many will miss her. She did her duty well. Hopefully she finds a good home in a museum or as a parade truck. |
