Great Balls of LEGO! A long-term WIP - #1
About this creation
Ever since I spotted wonderful work of Akiyuky I thought it would be fun to have a go at creating a Great Ball Contraption. I've started simple, but hope to learn and develop it as I go - something to do in between greebling sessions. Here's how it stands now;

I've uploaded a video of the above in action here - please excuse the quality, I'm no cameraman it seems :)

The next objective is to get the ring spinning and feeding the balls into the tippers.

Above is the latest module - my current favourite - there's a vid here.

This will definitely be a long term project, I can't drag myself away from sci-fi builds for long it seems :/

the ball contraption is a great way to push the medium s limit of the enveloppe, adding real water inspires me too, I still have regrets about not being able to pick 4 indy mine carts kits to make a roller coaster, very cool experiments, lol! hny!

WHAT AN AMAZING WORK OF ART. Great colour contrast, style and form... You sit up there with the Master Moccers. With all the malfunctions with getting it right comes BRILLIANCE when solving the issues. Well done.

Quoting Aidan Bryant Ah, these things are always neat! Makes me want to try some, once I get some motors and such.
They're great fun. You can start without motors tho, it's often best to hand crank them before adding the motor - it can help avoid spectacular 'explosions' ;)

Quoting Tim C Man, Jon! Okay, so, as you know, I'm a fan of yours. I've always thought that you are an excellent builder. I did not, however, know that you are a genius. I went to YouTube and watched this thing in action, and I watched Akiyuky's work as well. I see why you use his work as a muse, but what you have here is astounding, especially the element with the five spinning wheels. Incredible! I have loved LEGO since the first day that I touched them as a child, and yet I still see new things that can be done with them every day. I cannot wait to see this WIP completed.
Cheers Tim, glad you like it. I have a long way to go in this field, there's some ridiculous GBC stuff on youtube - trying to come up with something completely original for the next module, but sadly lacking the required engineering degree ;p You're right - LEGO is a very versatile medium/toy!

Thanks Brody - it is a good escape from the cold of space ;) It's not too addictive yet, I can only take so much scrambling around under the desk hunting for escapees...

Cheers Luke! Frustrating to build, but fun when it works. I can keep adding modules ad infinitum, so it may never get finished. Well, until the other half tells me it 'has to stop' anyway ;)

Quoting Senator Chinchilla . Super clever and well built! Really cool, I like the last module too. It creates a cool affect when cycling through.
Cheers! The last module has also created some spectacular 'explosions' too - the first version kept jamming and ripping itself apart. That's when I learned about timing and clutch gears ;)

Quoting David Alexander Smith This is so cool. It's a Lego ''Great Egg Race' (a link for those who don't remember this gem of a show http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/great_egg_race/). I love the final module; strangely hypnotic to watch. I'd love some behind the scene footage of the mechanisms, perhaps when the piece is finished finally. Brilliant as usual!
Thanks David. The Great Egg Race - now there's a memory. Professor Heinz Wolff =D I'll put some pics of the mechanisms up at some point, all basic stuff so far though. Planning on introducing some NXT soon, that stuff is great fun :)
