"At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge."
About this creation
(Sigh) Darth Maul...... Where do I begin?
Probably my second favorite Star Wars character just behind Boba Fett. The thing that made him stand out from the others was the fact that he was a quiet, mysterious figure that the audience knew nothing about. All we knew was he had an awesome double-bladed Lightsaber and that he liked REVENGE.
Up until now, I never owned a Darth Maul minifig, so I was very excited when I recieved the special edition "shirtless" Maul that LEGOŽ started handing out at Toy Fair 2012. I recieved mine from volunteering at LEGOŽ Star Wars Days at Legoland California and was impressed with the great details on his body tattoos and new horns piece.
As I understood it, this version of Maul was based on the new Clone Wars episodes in which Darth Maul returns for...... you guessed it; REVENGE. I went home and found the two episodes in which he appears and was actually a little disappointed with his return. I sort of feel that his return is a bit of a stretch to the Star Wars continuity, even though there are plenty of Fan Fics that include Maul after his unfortunate demise on Naboo. I was not a fan of his crazy new behavior; it totally ruins his calm nature in Episode 1.
The part I did like about him, though, was his mechanic, spider-like legs that he is found with on Lotho Minor by his brother Savage Opress. The official LEGOŽ minifig only included regular black legs, which did not fit the robotic legs in the Clone Wars show, so I thought I could improve that a bit...
Enjoy!

The lighting is very well done here |
|

Well, I think the lighting is very good, but the creation is probably good too, so I think you should have taken a picture or two with normal lighting revealing the techniques and shapes. Sadly though, this would still not be an amazing creation, because most people don't know what's the point and because it only has a small build portion with little or even no action at all. If you put it on a vignette or even a diorama, it would be awesome, even if the people hadn't seen how good the Maul is. Remember - you build for yourself, so why not make yourself a scene that you may enjoy even after you build it? A fig, even a good one, is not really much. |

The lighting here really hurts your presentation. It looks like the legs are black, but it's hard to tell because the background is...black. The dim lighting does at a sort of truck stop bar feel to the whole presentation, but I'm not sure that was your intent. I would really like to get a better look at those legs of his. "his brother Savage Opress". Really? I thought Savage Opress was the albino anorexic sith chick. Shows what I know. Attack!
I mainly chose the black background to create a sense of darkness and mystery, however I must agree with you about the difficulty in seeing the legs. The main pic was purposely darkened with a mist effect to lure the viewers in to this creation and see more. Guess they couldn't see much, huh?
Also, the "albino anorexic sith chick" that you speak of is actually Asajj Ventress. I can see how her and Savage Oppress get their names mixed up :P
Anyways, thanks for the advice :) |

You lucky dog. Darth Maul is my favorite character, and I liked his return. I actually didn't ming the spider legs too much, and I really don't like his new legs. They make him way too tall for the proportion to be right with me. His arms are too short now and his legs are too beefy looking. In my opinion, he should have just had Darth Vader type legs. And I know he really has no need to wear cloths now, but would it kill him to have some sith robes intead of that awful neck thing and just gloves? He looks naked without any sort of cloth in that area. You did a nice job with this, though. I just had to get my rant out. |

Very nice! I haven't taken the time to watch the episode, but he still looks pretty menacing. Btw, a few years ago there was a comic that came with two action figures (Darth Maul and Owen Lars). In the comic, Darth Maul had, not spider legs, but legs similar to General Grievous'. Just thought you might want to look into that. :)
I have read that comic a while back; I think it was in one of the Star Wars Tales volumes, but I don't remember which. In the Clone Wars episode, Maul eventually has just two robotic legs, as seen in the comic, but he is first found like a spider by Savage Oppress. |

While your right that the new crazy feel they gave to Maul doesn't work with the old character, it makes total sense. It's been a round about 10 years since his "death" and now he lives allow on a junk planet killing people for food and knowing that his life used to be great! He was apprentice to one of the most powerful Sith, he had a promising life and he had legs :P But now all that's been taken away from him and he's gone insane. All he wants is revenge because his life has been ruined. Anyone would do the same if they lived like that for 10 years! Anyway you've done an amazing job on upgrading him :D Nice work ;)
Yeah, I completely understand his that isolation caused his insanity, I just feel that it ruined Darth Maul's image of being a chill Sith Lord ;)
