I joined the Doughnut competition and the round was set as a scene from Lord of the Rings. I almost pulled out there and then, as I thought I had no way of making a fantasy MOC with the pieces I have. Then I thought what about the Balrog, I might have a go at him. My collection is pushed to the max here, but I achieved what I wanted, the Balrog stepping menacingly up onto the bridge. The biggest problem, no suitable Gandalf mini-fig; I'll lose points for this I'm sure. Well I didn't worry that much, considering I thought the MOC impossible before I started.

Quoting LEGO DOUGHNUT wow not bad i like it!!!!! and without gandalf i think the balrog is the character :D your score is : 4/5 overall build, 3/5 picture quality,5/5 for the awesomeness of the balrog(i think he the charecter without gandalf) and my opinion 5/5!!!! overall score is : 17!!!!! im really liking the build although some more pics would be nice
Also, if you are interested check out my Nautoloid MOC as I posted an appendix set of pics of my Lego collection there; I'm really not joking when I said this was a serious push for me.

That's so much better than I thought I'd do! Thank you, you just made my day. Agree regarding picture quality - this was shot on an Iphone 3GS camera, and was the set of photos that pushed me into thinking about gaining access to a better camera. My two new MOCs are shot on a lovely Cannon digital SLR (which I've been able to borrow). I wish I had it available for the Balrog, before I dismantled him.

Quoting Jon B Top stuff! You'll be needing those new bricks soon, you've just about tackled every theme so far, whatever next? Keep 'em coming =D
I've got two off beat MOCs in mind; let's see how the weekend building progresses!

Quoting Parrington Levens Hehey! Great Vig dude, really shows the epic size diff between combatants so simply and dramitacally. Great!
Thanks, that was the idea. What I lacked in pieces I hoped to make up for in composition. The side on photo where you can see the Balrog stepping onto the bridge walkway is just what I wanted to achieve. Messing with the heights was also important, so as to get the feel that the 3 mini figs are all climbing at different heights, and yet the Balrog, who is only at torso height on the top step, is still considerably taller than the highest mini fig. It was also an artifice to get the mini fig closer to the Balrog's head, so as to imply that it is roaring at him, and him recoiling from the roar.

Quoting Mihe Stonee looks sweet! nice to see someone else is out there who only use what he have! My Collection is a little bit bigger i think, but i also use what i have and try to make the best with it i can...
Its not all bad, a great training exercise. Sometimes I feel like pulling some full on OULIP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oulipo) experiments in Lego. I thought the other day about setting up a group which had the premise of building according to constraints which push creativity; the fifty piece competition I entered was halfway there.

Quoting Cath Bailey The next time you make something, you should take a shot of all the parts you're working with, really curious to see.
I might take you up on that, and post the pictures as an appendix to my next MOC. In short I have four cake tins of Lego, one for slopes and bricks, one for plates and strips, one for large elements like wheels, cockpits and windows, and one for functional elements like hinges and pins and decorative pieces. My main problem is that I only have a reasonable number of slopes in red; I have some functionality in blue and grey, but not really. Even in red I have some obvious scale limitations. I would have bulked out the Balrog here for example, especially in the upper arms and chest regions.
