Alternate model to 2012 Ninjago set: Fangpyre Mech... A highly articulated *hic* mech errr robot.
About this creation
This year's Ninjago offerings have been favoring me. I saw many sets from
this theme practically choked with cool parts for my MOC need , just by visually
"analyzing" their box-arts. So finally I broke down bought my very first Ninjago
set.... (9455) Fangpyre Mech. To be honest... the official mech in this set is
literally a "meh" for me (aka nothing much to hoot about). But the ratio of MOC
goody parts vs conventional bricks and plates are over 60%. So I must get this
set. Finally I did.
ps: its the HUGE number of sloped 1x2 grill parts that sealed
the deal for me :)
After the customary build of the set one fine night, I put it aside for a
week or so. This weekend was a great time to dismantle it and since I got a few
hours to spare... let see what "magic" I can weave with this set. All
the parts (except the minifig and their puny weapons, banana) are used up for
The final output FangPyre-Bot , although looks pretty well-done and articulated... has a few weakpoints:
The chest plates easily fall off due to fragile connection techniques
(suitable parts are scarce you know)
Same goes for the knee connections. Attempts to bend his knee must be
done veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery gently..... or else the popping off leg will bounced right into my GREEN Ikea rug/carpet.
Its the same Ikea rug that made my life hard during building coz many
green parts "dissapear" into it when they accidentally dropped off my tray.
The intermediate green ball joints
are of no use to me in this MOC. But I still must connect them somewhere.
Thus is truly challenging since the mentioned ball joints doesn't have a single
stud nor connection points to other LEGO parts (except another balljoint, which
I have used all of them up to make the limbs for this 'bot). They end up
dangling at the back of the 'bot and rattles everytime I pick it up. :P
The torso have ball-joint swivel capability. This means this 'bot can
tilt his waist up slightly or bend down.
I'm just glad this is over. This green guy will be around for one month at
least I guess in my display shelf :)
Ninjago has been given the Exo Force treatment! Loving the huge range of articulation on this moc. No cockpit for minifig though? Anyway, a touch more SNOT on the shins would finish it off nicely. Fantastic job though. Love it.
