About this creation
Finally, the Institute of Thermal Technology is proud to present to you the latest development of the Topol-M Mobile ICBM Launch System to be put in service with our Strategic Missile Forces: The Scorcher-13 Mobile ICBM Launch System!
The system consists of The main launch vehicle and a separate radar support vehicle. As a new feature, the support vehicle also functions as medium-range air defence in case of incoming attacks during operation.

First we will show the main launch vehicle features. Below is an overview of the left side.

And the right side.

The rear end. Notice the squadron markings. This particular vehicle is from the dragon squadron!
Rear light panels and ICBM exhaust outlet are also seen.

An external control panel for the hydraulics functions, located on the left side.

Here we have pipes for fueling the initial stage of the ICBM.

And these are missile countermeasures. Optional smoke or flares available.

Here we have an inlet for a cable linking the launch vehicle to the radar support vehicle. A cable means no jamming of signals, no enemy intrusion into datastream etc.

The front end of the vehicle. A nice height and plenty of lights! The vehicle's engine exhaust pipe can also be seen on the left side of the vehicle.

On the right side we have the hydraulics motor and service ladder.
Of course there are missile countermeasures on this side too though they are not shown here.

The vehicle itself runs on diesel by the way. Wow, those really are some big tires eh?

Next we have a couple of overview shots.

Front/left:

Front/right:

And front/top:

Now, let us take a look at the inside.

Here is the Launch Officers seat. He raises and launches the ICBM.

And the drivers seat. No point in explaining his job!

And here is the Commanding Officers seat. He tells you where to go and wether to launch or not!

Here is a close-up of the control panels. There's that Big Red Button again! This time with an 'ICBM Launch' warning light placed near it..
Behind the front seats are also a bench row with seats for 3 soldiers. This is not shown here for purpose of ease.

Though it will take a bit longer and the launch is done blindfolded, the ICBM can be launched by a single crew member and without the use of the radar support vehicle.

Now we will move on to the ICBM compartment.

Doors open.

A closer look at the ICBM in its sleeping position.
Notice the fuel hoses connected to the ICBM. Fueling up the initial stage is a matter of seconds! And the whole system can go from on the move to ready to launch in a matter of a few minutes.

Here, an overview of the compartment with the ICBM out of the way.

Here, the hydraulic pistons to raise the ICBM are shown.

These are the hydraulics tanks.
The top hatch to the control compartment can also be seen.

Here the top hatch is shown again, for clarification of placement.

..But like i said, the Scorcher-13 Mobile ICBM Launch System consists of two vehicles. We will now move on to the thoroughly redesigned radar support vehicle.

Unfortunately a lack of parts problem has led to some design difficulties that may be evident if you look closer. Those will of course be solved when the shortage of parts ends!

Here we see the right side of the vehicle with missile countermeaures and the cable to connect with the launch vehicle.
The left side is similar and has no exciting features so we will leave that alone today.

Let's take a peek at the Radar Officers seat. As you see, all computers nowadays!

And the drivers seat. He also has a radar screen as he also functions as SAM unit controller.
There is also a seat for one soldier behind the front seats.

A quick look at the rear of the vehicle. Not much to see here!

So now we will move on to the features of the vehicle.

First, here is a demonstration of the SAM unit. This is a new feature of our radar support vehicles!

And now we will unfold the radar. This delivers target data to the launch vehicle via the cable.

Radar and AA missiles ready!

An internal shot of the radar/AA missile compartment showing the cable when not in use.

And here's how mobile the SAM unit and radar are. The radar actually rotates full 360 degrees.

Here we see the cable connected and the radar in operating mode.

So i guess that means we're ready to launch!!

Just for show, here is an overhead shot of the system in ready state and with AA missiles ready.

And now we will Launch the ICBM. For purpose of proper view the radar support vehicle is not shown in the following shots.

Here's a view of the closed top lid of the launch vehicle when the ICBM is ready to launch.

And a side view showing the full height and placement of the prepared ICBM.

Launch sequence complete.

Here's a shot of the ICBM alone. Notice the connector pegs for the fuel hoses. This ICBM has a range of 12000 km and carries 4 250 KT (0.25 MT) Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs) and 4 decoys - or a single 1.5 MT warhead.

And finally, here is a composite photo with shots of the main vehicle of inspiration.

This is the Topol-M (RT-2UTTKH) also known as the SS-27 Sickle-B. This vehicle carries one ICBM With a range of 10000 km armed with a single 800 KT (0.8 MT) warhead. The vehicle can also be used to launch a sattelite into orbit. The smaller vehicle in the lower left corner of the photo is the radar support vehicle. Videos of the Topol-M in operation are viewable on Youtube.

This concludes our presentation but here are some technical data of the build for those interested.

Cost of complete build: Unknown, but in the neighborhood of 7-800 Euro.
Number of parts: Unknown, but MANY!!
Time to build: Absolutely impossible to calculate.

Scorcher-13 ICBM Launch Vehicle stats.

Length: 76 studs.
Width: 12 (14) studs.
Height: 14 bricks.
Weight: Around 2.3 Kg.
Version Number: 13
Crew: 3. Driver, Launch Officer and Commanding Officer. Also seats 3 passengers.

Radar Support Vehicle stats.

Length: 38 studs.
Width: 8 (10) studs.
Height: 9 bricks
Weight: Around 0.55 Kg.
Version Number: 2 (Rebuild pending, parts needed)
Crew: 2. Driver and Radar Officer. Also seats one passenger.

ICBM stats.

Width: 6 studs at lower engine section.
Height: 57 bricks.
Weight of ICBM included in Launch Vehicle weight.
Version Number: 4

Notes:

A lot of time has been put into avoiding over-greebling. Personally, i think i succeeded but i did go a bit overboard inside the ICBM compartment of the main launch vehicle.

Every single lime or green piece in my pile except window shudders has gone into this build! And some extra 60% or more green and lime pieces has been added to that as Pick-A-Brick orders over the course of the build.

Both vehicles in this build are quite sturdy and will take some rough handling if they ever need to. The radar, SAM unit, ICBM and launch ramp should be handled more carefully though. Especially the ICBM!

The host is not my sig-fig (i don't have one - yet) but a guy i call Vit, after a character in the movie 'Lord of War' named Vitaly. He's a nice guy but in the movie he's a bit in over his head!

Version 1 of this build was an SS-12 Scaleboard, the IRBM mobile launcher type that were involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Version 2 was the first attempt at building the SS-27 but it went horribly wrong. The first posted one - version 3 - was only slightly better than version 2. And now, almost 2 years and many versions later i have finally posted the remake.

For a comparison of bomb yields, the 'Little Boy' bomb dropped on hiroshima Japan in 1945 had a 130 KT yield and the blast levelled an 8 square kilometer area of the city taking anywhere from 70.000 to 80.000 civillian lives instantly. 'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' - the latter being the bomb dropped on nagasaki - are the only two nuclear devices ever (officially) used in war.

And finally if you would like you to know my view on nuclear weapons, it is that although they are awesomely destructive spectacles to behold they are simply unacceptable to use. They should all without exception be abolished - TODAY!! Wether it is from bombs or accidents, nuclear fallout WILL travel around the globe. So basically we are ALL downwind..

Thank you for viewing :-)

Quoting TF Twitch HI, BUILDER ALLAN! I was in the area and decided to drop by and say hi, and I realized that I have not commented on this yet. I am so sorry for that! But I can see how this is your most famous and popular MOC! The details and features are just phenomenal. And that goes for all of your MOCs. You put so much detail into everything to make it as accurate as possible and with more than enough playability.
Thanks for your comment :-) It took a long time to gather the parts needed to build it so i had plenty of time to find new ideas. I guess you could call it a reward for the frustration of waiting for parts :-D

Quoting sam shindig If you think fat man and little boy were crazy you obveisly hav not heard of....IVAN the most destructive bomb ever developed it was droped by russia as a show of power in the cold war. The plume rose I think 60 miles into the sky the heat turned rocks to ash the shock wave went around the world 3 times and shatterd windowes in finland. its total megatons was 100 but they split it in half i'm just glad they never made another one.
I do know it :-) The zsar bomba, though it WAS sixty KM. (Still a huge plume!) i have 'studied' this weapon too. It clocked in at 57 MT (by US readings!) and yes indeed it could have been twice that. It is to this day almost three times larger than the largest american weapon ever exploded. Time has run away from the massive bombs though. The catch-phrase of the day is tactical nukes, usually 250 KT - 1 MT in size. Sometimes even smaller. I used the japanese bombings as comparison to give a perspective of the scale of destruction if a modern nuke was to be used against a city target today. They ARE the only nukes ever officially used in a war :-)

Scary stuff but interesting :) The internal storing of the ICBM is really cool, using almost the whole length of the vehicle. No wonder the cost of this project went so far...this is why parts efficiency has become important to me to reduce the cost of each project. Excellent work on this!

Quoting Michael Rutherford Builder Allen, A very detailed MOC depicting a very complex concept. The entire system is thought through and complete. I am particularly impressed with your inclusion of the Command and Air Defense functions in a separate vehicle. System level thinking. All photographed well, and presented in a clear logical manner. That is a lot of good building and a lot of good planning. You might consider looking into this group: http://www.mocpages.com/group.php/19396 These guys would love to see you and your military stalking around on their map. Join the group and give them all something to lose sleep over! Attack!
Thank you sir! That actually means a lot coming from a person with your choice of career :-) Initially upon deciding to do the major remake i wanted accuracy. But i found that the silo with it's lifting mechanism was well beyond my level of skill, so i went with a 'my take on this'-version instead and I am very pleased that it turned out good enough to earn this comment from you! And thanks for the link to the group, it does look like a nice game :-) I am sorry to say that i would periodically be too infrequent a visitor to participate in the game on the level it's complexity deserves. But thanks for the tip! New stuff might turn up in a little while if i get around to making photos.

Thank you very much! Well a large collection slowly builds over time so if you keep on collecting you'll get there too :-) I sped up the progress of my own collection though. An adults privilege i guess :-D About finishing builds i think it might help to leave the build as it is for a while and then return to have a look at it with a 'fresh' set of eyes. That way it often becomes clear what went wrong with the build at first.

Quoting Scott Allen Oh my, this set is amazing. I love it. Ever seen the movie "Spies Like Us"? They have this launch vehicle. You've covered all the details and included so many cool features. Anyway, really great build. Your very knowledgeable on ICBM launch vehicles. ~cheers
Thanks :-) Well you're the second one to mention that movie so i got curious. I've seen it now (DON'T ask how i got it) and yep the one in the movie is an older version of the topol-m (which was developed in 1991). It's really cool to find out that this vehicle is in a movie and i didn't even know about it! Thanks for your thoughts on the radar but on the real ones the radar is square too. The small vehicle is up for a rebuild though, so the radar will be redone with a smoother surface soon :-)

Thanks, I'm trying to make my work look better than my Previous Work, which I was told was all ready pretty solid compared to most LDD work, but that's not enough for me. The Images for the Racers all use similar editing techniques but with small changes here and there to see which is better, but I think that all my Racer images need to be redone with the technique I came up with yesterday, http://breakingthelimitationsofreality.blogspot.com/2012/03/repetition-perfection.html, is superior.

Quoting The Lego Animal (Jay Rhum) Very impressive pics! This "Godzilla" Missile launcher is lot of great work! I love it, and its smaller support! Regards. Jay
Thanks man :-) Heey godzilla, that's a nice name.. Maybe i should use that as a nickname for the launcher! I'm glad you liked the photos too, i worked a lot on setting them up the right way :-)
