The Battle of Attu took place in Alaska’s Aleutian islands on 11-30 May 1943. Most people don’t know about this military engagement that took place on American soil. It was waged between the US military forces and the Japanese Imperial Army. Nearly every Japanese soldier that fought was killed. This vignette shows a squad of American scouts observing Japanese positions from their foxhole. As you can see from the snow, it was anything but warm – even though it was May.
