Citroen - Kegresse
An ordinary looking 1920s car with extraordinary abilities.
About this creation
Before the advent of practical four wheel drive systems, vehicles needed heavy tank-type tracks to go off-road. Then a chap called Adolphe Kegresse had the bright idea of a continuous rubber belt, making it suitable for use in lighter vehicles. Andre Citroen saw the potential of this idea, bought the rights, and together they created a great success.

Various larger Citroens of the 1920s could be bought so equipped - this is a model of a B4 with open utility body. It's fully remote control, using 2 XL motors for drive and an M for steering. Those XLs also turn the four cylinder engine as it drives. There's also suspension all-round (period-correct sliding pillar at the front and live-axle rear).

Double-hinged bonnet sides lift up to show off the engine...

... on both sides, though not at the same time...

To publicize these cars, Citroen organised various daring feats to demonstrate their ability, including the first ever crossing of the Sahara desert by car in 1922. All 5 cars made it across in 22 days unscathed. Better put the screen back up unless you want a faceful of sand...

Interior in all it's basic, err... glory. The steering wheel is connected, so it moves by itself as I drive it around remotely. It looks like it's being driven by a tiny ghost !

The independent sliding pillar front suspension, a surprisingly compact and effective system - with the sliding toggles and elastic bands I can tune it very precisely. There's a good dose of negative camber and a small degree of toe-in. It's stiff-ish but works very well. Strong, too.

The rear compartment with not very cunningly concealed IR receiver...

The 'engine' might be in the proper place but the motors aren't - they're mounted low, in the middle for that, er, sporty feel (!)

The battery box lives under the rear floor - easy to get at to change batteries. I drove it around the garden quite happily for a little while until it came to an obstacle it couldn't clear and stripped the gears on the motors - wish I'd have made those as easy to get at !

A little mod on the controller to make it feel more intuitive...

And that's it. My first attempt at an RC car. Now to strip it down, change those broken gears and play with it again :-)

I knew that in the old days the only tractor you could get was the tractor with tracks but I never knew this existed at all. Great work and I think I can speak for others when I say that we all enjoy your blocky models. They bring the old school LEGO designing to the modern days in a great style. Love this one, man! Keep it up!

Quoting MortalSwordsman . Wonderful stuff Nick, full of technical skill and style, I would expect nothing less from you. The front end looks so good especially the arches, bonnet and engine. I love the colours too, it is reminiscent of 853 with the yellow seats and red bodywork. An excellent addition to your growing collection of Citroens. Rebuild time :)

Quoting Lego Builders Great RC MOC! The functions are cool; would like to see a video though. :) Your timing was perfect concerning the "likes." I'm hoping they'll restore the likes that were made during the "likeless period" since we've got a few MOCs without "likes." :) Of course it's not that important - just nice to have. 5/5 -LB Jr.
I can't believe my luck - I didn't realise the likes were back when I posted so it's a pleasant surprise. As for a video, I will do one soon. Thanks for your support :-)

Quoting Ape Fight Saw the thumbnail and immediately knew it was a 'Nick Barrett' model : ) However, the RC Power Functions were a big surprise! With 2 XLs this'll have plenty of power - enough to strip gears it seems. Alas I know that feeling, and when the chassis is over engineered as our old 'studs up' techniques tend to be, what a pain the gears can be to get to as well. Anyway, a beautifully engineered and presented model, could only ever be a 10/10 : )
Thanks Ape. You're right about motor accessibility - it seems like I built the whole thing around them! It's got loads of torque (I underestimated the torque of these new motors and geared it to go quite slowly. This gives it great off-road ability at the expense of an occasional gear...)

Quoting Tom Simon Lovely job Nick. Superb, in fact. Was the uncleared obstacle your own foot? So, in the Sahara crossing, did they have to bring along replacements for the rubber belts? Then again, I'm not sure why I'm focusing on them any more than the front tires. I have this feeling that the belts would experience more wear, but I'm not sure if that is well founded.
Hi Tom. Not sure about belt wear. The obstacle was me being over-ambitious about what it can clamber over. (It went over my foot just fine :-) )
