The Bell Aviation AV-26B Hammerhead is a ground-attack VTOL designed to provide air support to Marine units. It first entered service in 2077.
The aircraft mounts four General Electric F-760 hyperfan engines on 360-degree swivel mounts, allowing for extreme levels of maneuverability and precision landing.
The pilot's controls in the aircraft are extremely simplified, with most data being fed directly into the Heads-Up Display (HUD) on the pilot's helmet.
The waist of the aircraft has bilaterally-mounted General Dynamics M260 Zeus 30mm cannons on gimbal mounts. By mounting the cannons along the waist, the Hammerhead can linger on-site and perform attack runs without directly approaching the enemy position.
For close air-to-air engagements, and attacking armor on the ground, the four MBDA Missile Systems Arapahoe rocket launch tubes are guided to their targets by laser designators coaxially mounted with the Zeus cannons.
The AV-26B. When you need to clear a hot LZ, protect an advance, or level your student loan officer's house, accept no substitutes!
This gunship rocks! It is very refreshing to see a VTOL aircraft with engines that actually look big enough to push it straight up into the sky. You nailed the thrust to weight ratio on this thing perfectly. It results in a very credible design. All of your pictures are clear, focused, and well lit. While this beast has buckets of thrust, I would love to see a version with short wings. With wings, you could mount more weapons, and it would fly more efficiently over long distances. Also, the two aft mounted guns seem a bit rushed (as compared to the rest of the MOC). Could you try putting one in a chin mount (like on a Cobra or an Apache) Again, this is a great VTOL. Cranks out a Mod 2. Attack!
Wow, guys, I didn't know I'd be seeing comments from some seriously great MOC builders praising my work! Thank you all for your great comments, and keep an eye out for the troop transport that this ship's built to defend. :)
