26. MOCing the 80’s
Ah the 1980’s, the good old days, Dennis Price’s favorite decade! Build us a MOC that shows something iconic from the 801’s. It can be a famous movie such as Breakfast Club or Terminator, a popular TV show such as Magnum PI, Simon and Simon, or Dallas; or famous music, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Motley Crue, Duran Duran. Anything you want, just make it 80’s!
Rio is the second studio album by the British rock band Duran Duran, originally released worldwide on 10 May 1982. It reached #2 in the UK and #1 in Australia.
The album was re-released in the United States in November 1982. It earned a Gold disc on 1 March 1983, and went Platinum on 26 April 1983, eventually reaching Double Platinum status. It peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 album chart in the US on 12 March 1983, and remained on the chart for 129 weeks.
Being that Duran Duran is my favorte band, I just jumped on the chance to make Rio!
TO THE MOC!
Another picture with the Duran Duran poster. Vintage 1983. I own 2 of them.
Here is a picture of the whole mosaic.
The "Rio" lettering. I didn't have enough room to put it on the top of the mosaic, so I had to go with the side. Judges, is a little thing like that really worth that extra point?
The main part of the moc, which I spent a good 4-5 hours building.
It's Rio herself!
The lower half of the mosaic, ahem, her chest.
The face.
Here is a personal favorite from me. Here my mosaic is shown next to an ORIGINAL vinyl from the band Journey's "Escape" album that was released in 1983. The size differences aren't that bad, I just wish I could pull a record out from my mosaic....
Another shot of the comparison, this time in front.
The texture of the mosaic. A real pain-in-the-arse to build with my available pieces....
The "eyes" of the mosaic. I used LEGO string to make them, and I think I failed miserably. I know it could be better, but I only can use what I have.
Here is a picture of the actual album cover I based the mosaic off of.
Finally, we have the artistic (sort-of) shot. I like that angle, reminds me of some other things....
4TH WALL: Whew, my first mosaic. Maybe not the best time to build one in all, but I feel like I actually did pretty well. Not my best or my worst, so I suppose it will have to do.
The proportions of the face are a bit off, I'm afraid. But, I have to give ya credit for really tackling a tough subject, particularly if you're struggling with parts limitations. The execution was a little rough, but a nice try. Score of 3.
Mosaics are tough. I'm personally not a huge fan of doing them myself, so I give you lots of credit for challenging yourself. To me, that's what the true nature of these contests are about. It's always good to step out of your boundaries, and try something new. With all that being said, there were some parts of your build that didn't quite live up to the original. Score= 3.

I wanna know who the artist that did the album cover! Who is the artist, if anyone can answer within the few days, you will show your age!
This isn't too bad of a mosaic. Thou I think you could have pulled it off better if you had just built it like most mosaics, where are you gonna find purple bricks, other than off the Harry Potter bus. HOWEVER! I wanna know who the artist that did the album cover! Who is the artist, if anyone can answer within the few days, you will show your age!
Mr. Peckham, I really like your choice with this. I especially like the use for strings around the eyes. I would've liked to have seen some varying degrees of shading across the body of the mosaic. I also didn't find that the final image really represented the original as closely as I would've liked. However, I understand the challenges inherit with these type of builds. Your Score: A solid 3

Love it! And the eyes are perfectly fine. Good luck in the contest! And, I have to say, I love your group name. Its amazing. By the way, you're in my spot...;)
