my first MOC no longer up! :(
About this creation
this is my first attempt at a large scale castle MOC.
it is in very early stages yet, but i cant add anymore until my next few purchases arrive!
i know the best builders on here tend to landscape their MOCs but as im a student nurse and funds and building time are tight, thats not really an option for me at the moment!!
so this is what ive done so far. my aim is to increase the outer wall, and behind this will be several houses in a similar style to the one i have made already, and this surround the main keep that will be roughly 4, 48x48 baseplates big. and to compromise the lack of landscaping, there will be a raised courtyard within the keep which i think will a cross between some of the norman keeps in france and england, with aspects of some of the crusader castles in the middle east such as belvoir or krak des cheavallier.
i am also aiming to have a fortified harbour entrance in the same style as the gatehouse you can see in these pictures and also some sort of a port aswell.
i know this isnt much of a castle compared to some of the class acts on here but id be grateful for some feedback anyway!!
and with regards to BGW syndrome that a lot of people tend to dislike... as im putting plenty of details in to the gatehouse, ill be leaving the outer wall plain, and then breaking up the keep with arrow slits and things like that!!
i will be adding updates with every order i get and then add to it. (probably one a month just after pay day haha!)
this creation is currently entered into a competition in the christian group: http://www.mocpages.com/group.php/21281

the finished inn, and neighbouring property

view down the inside of the outer wall with the new watch tower on the left (replacing the old large tower)

stalls empty until market day

a thief and deserter about to be put to death by the Black Falcon elite archers

Blacksmiths shop and house

overview of houses

inside the updated blacksmith

wenches converse outside the inn

empty market stall yet to be rented out

inside the gatehouse

the blacksmiths house

the inn again (this is module like the walls of the castle, the rear half will be made when i receive my next order from bricklink!)

over view of phase 2 of the MOC

market stalls inside gatehouse

main new addition is this large building. im having second thoughts about it at the moment but ill see if looks alright once i start work on the keep. i might keep design the same but make it a smaller watch tower. thoughts on that people?

Hey, I didn't know you'd posted updates! Maybe you should create a new page each time you upload new photos so people who've marked you as a favourite get a prompt to check the new photos out.
This is looking great. I don't think there's a problem with BGWs, although if I might make a suggestion or two: maybe consider breaking them up with a couple of tiles on headlight bricks. It doesn't take many (although I burned through heaps in my last build!) to make a difference. Also I'm a big fan of tiling/paving floors - and an added bonus is that it then doesn't matter what colour the supporting structure is, giving you a bit of extra flexibility to use parts you might otherwise not use. You can get 2x2 plates in bulk for next to nothing on Bricklink. I've just discovered that yellow and blue look great together!
Anyway, this is looking like heaps of fun. I especially like the little yellow tudor building on the floor against your bookshelf in a couple of the older photos - wish you had a close-up of that!
Sorry about this mammoth comment - and thanks for your recent comment too by the way.
- Rom.
Cheers for the feedback Rom appreciate it!!
i never thought of adding a new page to be honest, but it doesnt matter now as ive pulled this one down and started a new build. im just using one 50x50 baseplate, and as its a lot more compact, the BGW syndrome isnt as apparent! im waiting until payday til i can order a few thousand 1x1 tiles for the floor and a few more roof bits then ill be posting a new folder so keep your eyes peeled as my new one is so much better than this one! only obstacle ebing is finding someone with a top notch camera that i can use to take some decent pics!!
cheers!! Chris |

First off, wow! I think you're really giving Jackson's castle a run for it's money, Chris;) Accuracy: 5. This is simply stunning. Creativity: 5. I like how there's no area of the build what's missing detail. (You don't see that to often!) Photo Quality: 3 1/2. A bright light always makes for better photos. Overall build: 4 1/2. This build was exceptional. Your score comes out to be a big 18! Congratulations Chris and thanks for competing.
thanks for the score my man!! im suprised you scored me as high as you did for the picture quality as the pics were taken on a 3 year old camera phone so ill take that 3.5 no problems haha!!

haha yeah it did take a while mate. many hours over many weeks, chopping and changing this detail and that!
this MOC no longer exists now, as ive broken it up and ive started work on a smaller fortress, just using one of these grey baseplates. keep checking my page as ill have pics of the new one up soon!!

That gate house is really great! You put a really great amount of detail into it! You're right, landscaping is important but you can get to that later. I used to build very large spread out creations that weren't particularly good. Then I started building them more concentrated and on smaller bases and they started turning out a lot better. If you were to do that you might have more detailed better results, and landscaping would be easier because it would be a overall smaller castle. Just my thoughts! And I'm glad my castles inspired you to build such a great work! |

The size of this is very impressive. The towers and the wall look absolutely great. One suggestion: Cover the streets with plates and tiles (of course with different colours), so it would look more realistic then just a grey plate.
How big will it get?
not entirely sure how big it will get yet mate. initially when i started it, my intention was to make it modular and build one 48x48 baseplate at a time and see where it takes me, thinking it would end up on about 15-20 baseplates but that will take far too long as i dont have enough parts to make it that big!!
landscaping is a big issue for me, coz in my opinion the best MOCs include landscaping but i just dont have the parts for that at the moment.
im thinking of knocking it down and putting the 4 baseplates i have in a square and making a smaller castle but cramming as much detail into that as i can but im not 100% sure yet.
at any rate, itll have to wait until after my exams at university haha!!
cheers for the feedback!

Yeah man, adding details to the wall will be the last thing I do to it I rekon, because when there are more structures ie the keep and more houses then I'm thinking it might look a bit too muddled but ill see how it goes!
Check back soon mate coz as I've mentioned in previous posts, I've improved the blacksmith (combined it with the house) and started work on an inn, as well as adding to the outer wall and adding a large tower in the style of the gatehouse. Pics should be up within the next week or so!

Thanks man appreciate the feedback! Really liked the colours in your builds! I'm not really in a position where I'm saving bricks! My dad threw out my childhood lego when I first moved out so I started ordering bricks last year and what's used in these pics is more or less all my lego! Definately going to add variation in colour when I get nearer the end! And a better camera will show off the 'brick' look as apposed to a seamless slice of grey! Pay day can't come soon enough for me to order more bits haha! Cheers for the comments man, really like your builds!

You should check out a few builds by me (I'm not fetching for comments or likes at all!) )in which it kinda shows you can use many different colors in your walls. -greetings, Elderon

Thanks man, I'm pretty pleased with it as far as first attempts go! You're spot on with my plan aswell! I'm going to eventually add arrow slits to the outer wall but get those parts later as I'm concentrating onthe big building first then the subtle touches later on. I think I'm going to add some contrast in the walls with some small dark blue grey plates as apposed to bricks as I feel that using different colous bricks won't be as subtle as I'd like! Thanks for the feedback mate!
