Zombricks – Zombies in the shopping mall
About this creation

This is my entry for the Bricks of the Dead - 16 x 16 Challenge . It was a lot of fun, especially since I’m a huge fan of Shaun of the Dead . This MOC is also my homage to the godfather of all zombie films Dawn of the Dead , George A. Romero’s (and Dario Argento’s ) masterpiece and 2nd film in the ‘Dead’ franchise.

My MOC is loosely based on the mall and some of the scenes and actors in the film. Let’s start in the basement and work our way up.

In the film, the boiler room floor is actually above the shopping mall, but I preferred placing the boiler room in the basement, otherwise my tower looked a bit strange.
I realised almost too late that the contest is more about some sort of destruction, like broken windows or crumbling walls and not so much about zombies. So before the poor zombie guy got decapitated, there had been a little shoot-out, in which some of the pipes and vents got damaged. We also have some typical technic brick bullet holes in the wall.

The ground floor – or first floor – features a fast food restaurant which also was not part of the film, but I liked the idea. Broken windows and bricks, food all over the floor. This strange scene is actually taken directly from the film. Special horror make up master Tom Savini played the role of the lead motorcycle raider and he and his gang had a lot of fun with the zombies and a pie fight.
The main task for me was to fit the moving stairs on the 16 x 16 plate.

The next floor contains a movie theater, also not part of the film. The entrance is barricaded, probably to lock some zombies in the hall. Didn’t work too well, some zombies are still free and found a pretty snack. The poor guy shot his brains out, because he couldn’t stand the pressure. By the way, his eyeballs also couldn’t stand the pressure (when he pulled the trigger) and popped out. Don’t try that at home, kids.

Look at the poster and what film they’re showing.

This floor contains a store from the film, though I left a ‘letter’ out (which I realised too late). More broken windows. In my version, the zombies are in the store, not like the ones in the film.
Hey, there’s also a guy, quite recently eaten. See how he’s transforming. The guy on the moving stairs will have to wait a little longer, but at least he can move his body with his arms after the transformation.

Finally, the arcade with our three heroes and our heroine. I created some stickers to match their original costumes. To find out what happens to them you’ll have to watch the film. No spoilers here. But it’s worth it.

4th wall comment:
Like many of you know, the original LEGO® zombies from series 1 are quite expensive. I’ve been lucky enough to buy quite a lot when they came out, but I used most of them for my ‘Shaun of the Dead’ MOC.
I neither wanted to take it apart, nor wanted to pay a fortune for new zombies, so I decided to create my own. Regular stickers, like the ones I used to the hero’s costumes, are too thick. You can clearly see the edges and hairpieces won’t fit anymore.
I tried something new (okay, new for me) and bought waterslide decal paper. Then I designed some custom faces based on the original zombie and voilà, my little army was ready.
I flirt with the idea of selling them (after I created some custom bodies).

Nice busted glass. Also nice subtle touch with the poster too. I prefer The Walking Dead but I did like the English sarcasm of Shawn of the Dead. Oh and I really like the basement seen too.

Quoting Finn tegotash Very nice, Mr.Xendomurphy. I especially love level two (with the zombies in the store) but all the levels contain great techniques and details. What material do you print your stickers on? Also, could you post the decals for the Zombies and the Day of the Dead movie poster. Pretty Please...
Thank you, Finn. I uploaded the decals and the poster over at my flickr account due to higher resolution (http://www.flickr.com/photos/59454670@N07/). I'm using waterslide decal paper which I order online, a standard laser printer and an acrylic coating to seal the decals. That reminds me, I always wanted to post a little tutorial on the bricksofthedead page.

Quoting Kalva Pevensie I noticed nobody else asked this so I will, did you make the McDonald's sign out of lego tongs?
I used the official LEGO® rigid hoses.
Quoting Kalva Pevensie Also, although an outstanding build, in reality if those zombies had broken through the glass, wouldn't they have gotten to the other side of the wall?
Some of them already had been there (see the bodies). But those, who were locked in the Penney's mart, just managed to break the glas right before I took the photo.
Quoting Kalva Pevensie Anyways as I and others have said, an outstanding build, and I especially like the boiler room level.
Thank you, Kalva.

Quoting Deff . Wo kann man in Deutschland am billigsten Steine bestellen? Bricklink?
Thank you, Deff, very kind.

Thanks, Stu. Finally somebody who mentions Tom Savini (http://www.best-horror-movies.com/image-files/dawn-of-the-dead-head-savini.jpg). His minifig is all original LEGO®, no custom stickers and yet I think he looks spot on. About the bike: I considered adding one, just like a helicopter on the roof, but then I was running out of time.

Well you know I like the zombies mate as I told you elsewhere, but I love the staging of the scenes too. What to say ... Morphy as always, you create something unique. The zombies are really well done, to the point of being almost funny. hehe To be a creation so small everything is taken care of in detail, the escalator is beautiful, creates a wonderful bond between the floors, creating a lot of continuity. My favorite plane is the Level -1 and Level 2. A work worthy to bring your great signing.

WOW! This is choc-full of excellent techniques and...obviously...some awesome zombies! The decals are excellent. My favorite has to be the mustached zombie that is the old Uncle Vernon minifig from the Harry Potter sets several years back. But the Soccer-Player Zombie comes in close second. I'd hate to have him playing on my team! :D The escalators rock and I love the McDonald's in the cafeteria. I might have to hijack that escalator technique at some point. Good luck in the contest!

Very impressive! This is a spectacular tower, even though I've never seen a zombie film. It's remarkably clean, and stays uncluttered even with all the details. The boiler room is excellent, especially all the pipes. I also like how you did the tilted vent on the back wall. The McDonald's "M" is superb, as is the brilliant brickwork on the wall. The railings on the escalators are fantastic, you really put flex tubing to good use in this MOC. The broken window and fallen flowers are terrific, as is the elastic covered corpse. Also, awesome work on the zombie decals, they fit the build well. Great work!

Just awe-inspiring my friend! This build is just phenomenal for a 16x16 base! When I first looked at it the escalators really caught my eye. It must have been hard incorporating them in this! The little things are nice as well such as the bursted pipe and knocked over plant. The gore in this is just beautiful! I love the way you made the guy who shot himself. Unfortunately I have yet to see the "Dawn of the Dead" so I can't really relate this to it. Overall this is an amazing vignette! Very well done! Good luck in the contest :)
