5000+ piece custom Death Star - NOT exactly minifig scale (a minifig scale Death Star would be approximately 75 feet high lol), but is built to fit minifigs. 6 Levels, composed of 6 individual stacking modules. Measures approx. 22" tall.
About this creation
This is definitely my crowning achievement in LEGO building. The project started out as a small 8-inch high Death Star that was made up of 5 small stacking sections. A fun little exercise really. But over time I constantly expanded it, tore it down and rebuilt it, added levels and details, until it is now the 22" tall behemoth you see here.
Die-hard LEGO fans will notice the large amount of non-LEGO pieces present in the model. I make no apologies for this - fact is that the easiest and cheapest way to find the thousands of battleship-gray pieces required for this was to use Mega Bloks USS Kittyhawk aircraft carriers. There are 3 used in this model, along with 2 Mega Bloks Battleships. Many of the details are built with LEGO, so it is a hybrid model making the most of both families of pieces.

UPDATED MARCH 2011 !!
I wanted a new large LEGO project to work on, and decided it was time for yet another rebuild of the Death Star. So it was completely torn down and rebuilt from the ground up. This time I did not include the outer shell, which is what had kind of set me apart from most other models, but I really wanted more play area and the outer walls were getting in the way. With all the pieces I had to work with by not doing the outer shell, I was able to make the core structure much stronger and larger. So the model grew in size and now has much more space for rooms and hangar bays, etc.
I had a lot of fun incorporating the details I had used before, and also took some ideas from LEGO's own Death Star. Funny thing - the official LEGO Death Star did not exist when I did the previous Mark V version, which had many things that showed up in LEGO's offering when it came out about 6 months later... Sometimes I think they saw my model here and took some cues, lol :) Anyhow, I turned around and rebuilt mine like theirs (no outer shell), only bigger and with more going on inside.
Here are pics of the latest version, I am still adding details as I go but this is pretty much final (used up all pieces from previous MARK V version, as well as additional LEGO and Mega Bloks elements I had lying around):

Very nice work! I have tried, and failed, multiple times to build my own Death Star; congrats on yours! Also, your use of Megabloks is completely acceptable. It's not cheating, it's being frugal! And finally, a suggestion: make the vehicles unable to fit a minifig. They will look fine and fit better on the model, and you will be able to achieve proper detail and scale, with more room to play on the actual Death Star. 5/5! |

Hey all,
Haven't checked in for a while... Thank you for the nice comments. I actually went recently and rebuilt the left side middle section, adding some hallways and lookout spots for Stormtroopers, makes it even nicer. Will post pics soon, along with another giant Space LEGO MOC that's been taking my time up lately.
One question - why so much hate for MegaBloks? I mean really, I know they're not as good as LEGO in how they click together, but in the end who the heck cares what pieces went into the model, it looks just as it would if all the grey pieces were LEGO. I just don't get all the hate. Plus, LEGO simply does not make those nice smooth flat plates that I used for the flooring, which I have to say are the best most appropriate thing for the Death Star floor and really make the model.
Anyhow, thanks again for the kind words, but please tone down the MegaBloks poo-poo'ing, as I don't think it's relevant to the actual appearance and playability of the end product. I had 3 MegaBloks USS Kittyhawk aircraft carriers in my possession and they allowed me to build all this just fine, why invest tons of $ on bonafide LEGO pieces to achieve the same result? It's all LEGO minifigs and specialty pieces, just MegaBloks for the structure and flooring. I worked with what I had...
Cheers,
Paul |

This one looks so nice! I like the way you hinged it. I agree that the lego one that came with minifigs is cool but needed the outer shell. The USC version is nice but you can't play with it. With this one you get the best of both worlds |
|
|
Mmmm.. Its good "Rainbow warrior", but if it was all grey it would be even better!! Keep the collection growing and you'll get there! P.S for grey I would buy the Knight sets.. |

no comment, no rating. without the impurities, it would have been a genuis creation. it's nothing personal, but this moc perfectly describes my view of megabloks

apart from your size calcs of 75ft minifig scale being WAY off it's a rather impressive work you show here. could get a little rounder in the next version but that's details ;-) ... As for the size, the first DS is said to be 160km in diameter, given an average size of 1.75m per male human this would be somewhere around 91.5k males on top of each other to get the size; with a plain minifig standing at amazing 4.1cm you come to an approximate minifig scale of 3.7km diameter so a true(!) minifig scale Death Star 1 would stand at about 2 miles height |

The best part about your Death Star is playability (I think if you figure a minifig is 1.5 meters then a scale death star would be way bigger than 75 ft. A scale Blockade Runner would be like 6.5 ft. long.) |
