A Glimpse into the LEGOratory
From the Vintage 2012 Collection
About this creation
If anyone was at all curious what my studio space looks like, or how big my collection is, here you go.

On my desk is a 15x20 mosaic back that is glued with a checkerboard pattern painted onto it. Behind is a big, black 'W' which is still in the prototype phase (hence the single color), and 'Vote Spock' on the wall. You'll also see a few basic tools on the table too: Acetone, paint brushes, brick separators, pencil sharpener, a ruler and my trusty rubber mallet. ...just out of frame are my Prisma Colors.

On the racks, you see my brick separated by type and color. I've been using quite a bit of brick lately for projects and commissions and haven't been replacing it, so supply is getting a bit thin. I'm a few months out from a healthy spending spree to restock.

I typically work on this side of the table with my back to the drawers on the wall. I keep my plates and minifigures in these drawers. If I have too many of a single element and they don't all fit in a drawer, I fill the drawer and then store the surplus in a container on the big racks.

I keep some of my work on the walls and on top of the drawers behind me. You can see two of my kachinas, some QR codes (functional), a couple official sets that I thought were too cool to take apart (their times will come), my Planet of the Squid photo and some stuff I did for Papa Roach back in the day ...I got the bricks and the photo autographed by the band.

A different view of my home-made 'Pick a Brick' wall. You can see a nice glimpse of all three racks. At the very top, there is a stack of 30 8x16 grey baseplates that I will be putting to good use soon.

You can see Spock again, on the floor is Al and the Arizona Wildcats logo.

Thanks for checking out my collection, I've been hoarding LEGO for just a few years now, before then I was building with my kids' bricks.

As always, feel free to comment or ask questions.

Dave I'd love to have a talk about how you mount your pieces. And how you make sure that the underlying baseplates stay together without leaving an ugly gap. I have my own solution but it requires an extra layer of plates (expensive) and have the mosaics framed (very expensive). Looking for more cost efficient ideas. Arthur@gugick.com Art

hey nice collection! I hope to some day have one like it. I am a teen and have a decent collection. I mostly sort by part mixing colors. would you recommend sorting by color? And you said you sort by color and part, how do you decide what parts you sort out of color? happy building!!

Quoting Blake Baer I've never had the chance to walk into another FOL's house. I have a good friend who does LEGO but his sorting system is embarrassing. Functionality is indeed a huge part of the collection. I may post mine soon, but mine isn't nearly as systematic as yours is.
Post it anyway dude! Before I deleted my account, I had posted my son's collection that I built from. It was a lot smaller and sorted by color only. I think EVERYONE has to sort by color at least once, its certainly a learning experience that needs to happen so we can move past it.

I still place blame SQUARELY on Keith Goldman for this sickness. I started building in 2006 with my kids' LEGO, I finally started buying my own brick in late 2008. In early 2009, I went to Keith's house and saw this amazing work space and well organized (and massive) collection of brick. I was immediately struck with 'collection envy' and I have had a complex since. Although this is less than four-years of accumulation and organization, most of the growth happened in 2010 and 2011. I am eager to see what 2012 has in store.

Quoting Blake Baer The mosaics on the wall add a TON of professional atmosphere to your gorgeous room. Your sorting system is very efficient and inexpensive compared to some as well. Congrats on a very well rounded building quarters.
Thanks Blake, a lot of thought has gone into this room. I'm pretty happy with it, but there are a million things I would do differently. ...starting with getting a bigger room ;-) You're right, containers get expensive, not quite as expensive as the brick, but darned expensive. The most important thing about it though, is that its functional. That's the key in any layout, it has to work for the builder.

The funniest part to me is when you said the supply of bricks on the wall was getting thin. :) Very nice and clean. I really like it!

Your collection is incredible, but I really think that seeing your lego portraits of your kids hanging in the house is probably the coolest part of all!
