The Type 2 Flying Boat is a 4-man photo-recon patrol aircraft that is intended to fly the vast tracts of ocean in search of enemy fleets, subs, and the rescue of downed naval aviators.
About this creation
One of my more...enduring memories of RTSs is flying around in Batlle Stations: Midway for 15 minutes on end prowling through the seemingly endless Pacific in a PBY Catalina for that dastardly Japanese fleet, just to have to switch back to my capital ship to take care of a sub, and then loose track of where I was with the Catalina; and to start all over again...

Here's the Type 2 FB. Accommodations: 4 with up to 2 rescued naval airmen. Quarters? Non-existent. Facilities? You're joking. Entertainment? Hours on end of staring into the endless expanse of ocean struggling to stay awake. Perks? The undying gratitude of those you rescue, but what does that do for you when you're flying through a storm and you happen to be the nose-gunner? Of course, none of that is on the recruiting posters, would you sign up for that?

The crew consists of a forward gunner, pilot, and two observers/camera suite. Armament consists of one 0.50 cal machine gun, and up to 1,000 lbs of external munitions from bombs to torpedoes to depth charges depending on the mission.

Nose-gunner's nest. I really liked the way this came out.

Cockpit. Yes, that's a steering wheel. That's how they did things back then. Don't ask me.

I feel bad for the poor nose gunner. He's probably awfully cold.
In all seriousness, very nice plane, it's amazing. |
