Piranha Sport Hybrid Concept
The Piranha is a concept car I built specifically for the 50th LUGNuts build challenge over on flickr. The idea of the competition was to build a car that represents the mysterious female character introduced in a short story. From the reading, I pulled several little details to incorporate in the car, like the mention of automatic headlights and "A car that only made sense in my wildest dreams!". This is the result. I named it after the terrifying and sinister Piranha fish of the Amazon river because it has a rather fishy appearance by way of rear fins and gills on the side. Also the big gaping grill on the front is sort of like a fish mouth. The car is insanely hi-tech and features all sorts of LCD displays in the interior. At the rear, there is a solar panel and batteries for powering the electric engine in the hybrid drive train. This car not only goes fast, but it will get you long distances! It will look good no matter where you end up! Thanks for viewing! If you know about my flickr account, please visit there and give comments and support so I might have a better chance of winning the contest! Thanks!!!
About this creation
The forward-clamshell hood slides forward and pitches down for access to the gasoline motor. Like my Triacorsa concept, the engine head sticks out of the hood when closed.

The engine has what little detail I could actually fit onto it and still allow the hood to close completely. I'm a little disappointed in this part...

Like the hood, the roof section opens upward and back for a true jet-pilot style entry! This was inspired by the SAAB Aero-X concept. (R.I.P. - SAAB - December, 2011)

Here's a shot with just the roof canopy open.

The interior is actually where I began building this car and I designed around it. It's full of screens and buttons galore! The floating center console is inspired by Volvos of the late 2000s.

To improve my chances in the build contest, I decided to build my interpretation of the mysterious girl mentioned in the story. I normally don't build figures, but I really like how she turned out!

Another shot with the girl and her insane vehicle.

The canopy opens by a press of her remote!

The story mentioned headlights that automatically turned on with the push of the button. When I first read that, I knew I had to use glow in the dark pieces!

Dark photography is ridiculously hard with my digital camera... but after adding a bunch of effects in Google Picasa, I got this neat little picture!

Front 3/4 view. So aggressive looking! Try and tell me "Piranha" wasn't the most appropriate name for this car!

Top view. Pay close attention to the hood. I built a little angled hole opening in front of the engine head, but the photo is almost to dark to see it.

Side view. The window trim pieces were an afterthought, but I'm so glad I put them there!

Another front view. The green accents on the car played a huge role in this design.

The taillights are crazy to say the least. Besides being nearly impossible to clean after a trip down a dirt road, I figure they looked pretty cool and futuristic. What do you think?

Rear view! The diffusers on the bottom are only easy to see in this picture. The rest of the pictures are a bit too dark.

Rear solar panel! Sparkle sparkle! I'm so glad my friend gave me his old LEGO collection that was full of classic space parts!

The solar panel lifts up to revel the batteries! The solar panel charges the cells for the electric motor, but you can also use the DC plug to charge the batteries from an outlet in your home!

UPDATE 1/5/12 - Thanks for all your support! My entry took 1st place in the contest! As a prize, I received the new VW Camper Van set and Cars 2 Francesco, a total value of $160. Wooo! :)

This car is very reminiscent of those concept cars that Hot Wheels and, to lesser extents, Matchbox and Tonka/Maisto make. It also reminds me of a real-world electric supercar called the Tesla Roadster (Google it if you want some more information). However, style wise, it reminds me a bit of the mid-2000s Mitsubishi Eclipse. The sheer amount of detail is insane and the girl looks like she'd fit right into the Test Drive, Midnight Club, or Need for Speed universes, let alone the car, too. You did a good job with this MOC, sir.

Quoting Steve The Squid I have to say that this is the single most stunning lego creation I've seen... And I've seen some pretty stunning things! My only complaint is the clear rear wheel wells, they are a fantastic idea but they don't fit the car in my opinion, perhaps if they were black. The green simply MAKES the car, a car of any other color would not look so cool. Those green highlights are mad genius! The futuristic paneling in the car, from the holographic display, to the clear steering wheel was great, and the seats fit the car so perfectly at such a great angle and shape! The engine compartment does indeed look simple, but that is the beauty of it... a futuristic car with a futuristic engine, it just really looks like shiny coverings for it, so I love it. All the curves of the car came out so great, from the fins on the back to the silver trim on the windows to those little swirls you put in front of the windows with the teeth. The low profile of the car also add greatly to the effect. The addition of the solar panel was such a nice touch too, especially how it's completely flush with the rest of the car. I have to say, I think one of my favorite details on the car is the green underneath the doors, it looks so cool and realistic. I dream of having ability like this, and I congratulate you epicly! I cannot fathom how anybody could beat you in whatever contest it is that you're entering, and I wish you good luck, though you probably don't even need it!

Holy mother of pearl!!! Sexy, aggressive and simply stunning, the car is not bad either ;). I agree with JS below one of the best looking cars I have seen in lego. The details are breathtaking. My favourite bits are; the sideways grills, the flashes of green, the exhausts, the interior, the little silver fins that stick out the top, the opening features... I could go on and on. My only gripe is the trans windscreens - they look great from the side and rear but on th 3/4 rear view they look slightly out of place. But that is it. I only say that because you asked specifically. Amazing work, good luck and merry Christmas :).

Sorry, one other thing to add... I like the glow in the dark pieces, but it would be great if you got some light (like those from Artifex Creation) and added more light features- front, back and interior. I think some lights in the interior would work great with the floating console.

One of the best-looking cars I've ever seen on MOCpages. The styling is fantastic- sleek and sexy with a bit of wickedness. I hope you win the contest because you put together an incredible car that truly has a concept car feel to it. One minor point is that I think the solar panel came out after classic space because I never remember that piece. Trans-yellow and later trans-green was about as crazy as classic space got.

Absolutely stunning! I see a lot of clean, beautiful lines throughout this car! I noticed the grille pieces first- I like how they are placed sideways and flow with the sloped plate above. You shaped the body into a very sleek, quick-looking design. The flip-up roof and hood are very unique and work well on this car! The colors you have chosen go together very well- the green interiors works well, with the black and metallic silver exterior. The use of the metallic silver was very successful- I really like the striping you did with it. One of this car, that I especially like is the rear. With all the diffusors and winged elements you have created a very unique shape on the rear end, and to not mention the use of the Speed Racer windshields to cover the back wheels- that is very futuristic and adds a cool effect to an already cool car! Very well done, my friend! Keep building! -Anthony Dunne
