Fiat Bartoletti type II Race Car Transporter
Hi. Here it is the Fiat Bartoletti Type II Race Car Transporter. Used by the Alan Mann / Ford Race Team in the mid 1960s.
About this creation
Inspired and built for Ape Fight’s - Classic Race Teams Group . The aim of the group is to recreate the race teams from the 50s, 60s and 70s – the Golden Era of racing. I have chosen the Alan Mann / Ford Race Team. This transporter was used by several race teams throughout the late 50s and 60s. It carried cars such as Scarabs, Cobras, Fords and even Ferraris. In the 1960s Alan Mann got his hands on this beauty and transported all kinds of Fords all over Europe as the Ford Team boss. I intend to recreate some of the cars that were transported by this wonderful vehicle. Next I will build a Ford GT40 (now completed). And I am delighted to say that the very talented Joost Cumps, Austin Nomorinfo and Patrick Star have also built cars for the Alan Mann Team.

If this moc has inspired you to build something similar why not check out the group and see the wonderful creations already posted. It is not a contest but a friendly and supportive group with like minded builders.

A special mention goes to Nick Barrett for supplying the 4 additional wheels I needed (Via his Bricklink store VINTAGE TECHNIC UK ). He also advised me on the steering. I had to completely redesign the steering system half way through the build due to the sheer weight of this creation. The redesign has compromised the HOG system (slightly) and was also the final nail in the coffin for any hopes I had of including a gearbox. :(

I purchased an additional £40 worth of used blue plates and bricks from another Bricklink store - BRICKS_4_SALE . A very fast and friendly service, highly recommended.

I would also like to thank DeTomaso Pantera for some inspirational ideas (the hoses around the windscreen and the inside door panels) and loaning me a few pieces for the all important finishing touches.

Measurements:

24 studs wide
96 studs long
28 studs (not bricks) high
Approx 4 Kg (9 lb) in weight

Features include:

Hand of God steering
In-cab steering
Differential and straight six engine
Opening doors and cargo bays
Removable roof
Mechanically operated top deck (via the fuel cap)
Manually operated rear ramp
Reclining seats
Engine cover

Future modifications:

Pneumatically operated cargo doors
Mechanically operated rear ramp (via the second fuel cap)

Squint your eyes and the writing looks quite good. No squint some more, that's it ;). It is supposed to say COBRA Powered by FORD. The top line is supposed to say ALAN MANN RACING LTD., BYFLEET ENGLAND. No amount of squinting will reveal that ;)

Vitruvian Mann Racing Team? Team Owner Leonardo De Vinci

Turn the fuel cap and the top deck will rise and lock into place. I intend to build a similar function for the rear ramp using the other fuel cap.

The money shot

I hope you like it. Sorry about the photos - they are rubbish I know. I will take some more on a brighter day.

Overall I am very pleased with this moc. I used classic Technic principles (nothing fancy) to build the chassis and framework, then bolted on as many blue plates as I could find, beg, steal or borrow. Due to this it is very strong and playable but not as heavy as a pure brick built creation.

My only disappointment is that I did not include a gearbox. There is plenty of room under the cargo area (for a gearbox) but the main problem was attaching it to the gear stick. The forward cab design and the location of the engine (under the very front of the cab) made this extremely difficult. I am sure it is possible but you need to be a lot more cleverer than I is ;).

I would love to hear your comments :)

Quoting TheLegoNoitAll . a complete rebuild? I could imagine this one took forever!
Just the front end. My car builds tend to be very light weight (but still strong) so I can easily take things apart. Under the plates is an oldschool technic frame which should allow me to get inside and make changes. Time is the major issue.

Thanks Noitall! Yeah there is plenty of room for the gearbox itself but getting the gear stick (shifter) into the cabin was the issue. The straight 6 engine, steering wheel mech and the seats are in the way. I am sure I could make a ‘hand of god’ style gear shifter on the roof but that would also look ugly. What’s your idea? I am always keen to learn new techniques and ideas.

Awesome truck! So you say you couldn't figure out a way to make the gearbox work, but there's enough room behind the cabin? if you were going to use the official gearbox parts, i have an idea :)

Quoting Tim C Can't believe I haven't seen this yet, Joe. Some really nice stuff going on here. First off, I love the technic function work you put in here. That had to have driven you half-crazy getting that all to work right. Your hose work is perfect. Very creative. The Vitruvian Mann Racing Team is so witty. Being a closet arts fan, myself, you gave me quite the chuckle there. What really made me say, "Oh, wow," (literally), was the creative use of parts to write Cobra and Ford on the side. Brilliant.
Thanks Tim. You have highlighted some of my favoutite parts. Most of my mocs tend to look a lot better if you squint your eyes. I think you are the first to mention the Vitruvian Mann - Is it wrong to laugh at your own jokes ;). I am also a bit of a closet ‘arts fan’ I have a few artsy mocs planned for the future which I hope you will like.

Quoting Gabor Horvath Oh, you have already bought it! Happy Birthday! :)
Hi Gabor great to hear from you. I had a feeling you would buy it too. I haven’t built it yet, hopefully tonight. I did wonder about the large motors, maybe the XL motors will give it some extra power. I actually bought it for the pieces - I have a few mods in mind so watch this space. @ LB jnr it cost £140 which equates to about $200 dollars I think.

Quoting David Roberts This creation is impressive because of its size, the detailing and the working features. Plus I'm envious that you own NINE of the big Technic tires of my childhood! I like the detailing in the cab, like the bulkhead clock and the statue. The lettering on the truck works well too. I also like the way that there are studs everywhere and this model proudly declares that it is Lego!
Thanks David :D really glad you like my studded style - it is not to everyone's taste. I had to buy 5 wheels from Mr Nick Barrett to complete this beast(he is on Moc Pages too, if you like studs check out his awesome mocs).

Hi Joe :-), thanks for your lovely comments on my moc. You are right that the crash costs me a lot of viewers, because yesterday there was kind of a rush on the views. But hey, I am hapy, I have more then one like out of ten viewers, and it is for the love and joy for the Lego, other stuff is nice but not that important. Some suggested I made a windscreen for the car, and they are right, but I did try for a view hours, and oh boy, that won't be easy. I wish you good luck with the GT40, I am sure you make again a masterpiece. If once you fall into mocblock again, try the Falcon or the Escort of the racing team? Greeting to you and yours, I can't wait till thursday for your minimoc :-)

I thought you might be intrested in more info about Lego animation. Yes, animation does require lots of patience! The walking technique that my brother and I currently use is a often called a 5-step walk cycle. The easiest animation to see this that I've made is the test #3 - 4th animation. I suggest doing tests like we've done, then do more complicated ones as your skill in animation improves. And as far as editing, it can be a pain, so right now we don't have any sound for our videos (it makes editing a million times harder). For regular walking, each frame is 0.1 second. I'd love to see a animation from you and DeTomaso. BTW, search "MICHAELHICKOXFilms" on YouTube - he's a REAL master at Lego animations!

Super ultra spiffy! At least your ramps have some functionality, since there appears to be no tranny... =P Also, the mini lettering works very well and those wheel designs great! Another wonderfully blue transporter for the group!

this is great, vehicles this size can be extremely tough to make, but you nailed it! Also, thanks for mentioning me, I can't wait till my Mustang is done! 5/5

This is something to savour - Wonderfully thought out Technic functions, brilliant and unique looks, a huge asset to the group. Transporter heaven! It also benefits from a Chapman-esque lightness - 2.5 kg lighter than mine, and it does all the same things and looks as good (maybe better ?). Bravo!

Oh Yes!! I've been waiting for this with much anticipation and you haven't disappointed; this looks even better than I'd hoped!! The full-stud bodywork looks wonderful, and you've teamed it with some simply superb details (the grill, art-deco interior lights, and mirrors are my favourites). The best thing is I think all these transporters are of roughly equal complexity and brilliance, and all are slightly different depending on what the creator chose to focus on. This and Nick's are the most Technic-y, and it's meant you've been able to do thing I never could with mine (like the mechanically working ramps for example). Your best creation by far : ) 10/10

Thanks everyone, it means a lot coming from you guys as you are all excellent builders. @ Tom - Thanks mate, it's not a patch on yours but I really appreciate your carefully chosen comments. A wide angled lens is needed for these beasts. :)

I'm loving these and this fits right in with the others already built. Stunning.

Weyhey another beautiful transporter for the collection! I have seen this in person and I can tell you all it looks better than the photos suggest. So many wonderful details, I'll name a few of my favourites. The all round studlyness, the way the writing is portrayed, the quirky details like the gear knob and badge on the front, the working ramp, the very clever wheel spoke design and everything elso lol I don't think anybody could have done a better job on this, I absolutely love it! You should bring it over here after Christmas and well get some better photos of it using my wide angle lens ;-) and the transporter crew need to get together in the pits for a mega photo shoot soon!
