A 4-wide Volkswagen T1 panel van with working and guided sliding door and new chrome wheels.

About this creation
I really didn't want to build another VW T1, but then I was challenged to build a sliding door when I saw Hot Rod's panel van. I found a way to build a working and guided sliding door and then the T1 was my first choice to include this gimmick :-)) So I made another one, this time a black/white one. So this is it:
Side view, door open, ...

... half closed ...

... and closed.

Eat this, Vince! ;-))
Detail of the door open, ...

... half closed ...

... and closed.

The door is really sliding and it's guided by two rails. For a 4-wide the door is quite thick, but for this system it has to be 1 stud wide with another stud for the inner panel. On a bigger model it would look a lot better. And yes, I will add more photos of it, later ;-))
Did you notice the chrome wheels ...? I found a way to make these wheels with 1x1 round plates as hubcaps:

This is the "underwear":

A 2x2 plate with Technic holes and 2 half Technic pins with a knob. Then there is a 3 studs long "light sabre" and a 1x1 round plate with a hole on each side (these are included in some of the LEGO board games). Adding a 1x1 round plate as hubcap on each side you get a nice rim for classic 8mm tires.
The design of the T1 panel van is based on my Camper, but for the sliding door it had to be 1 plate higher. I put the additional layer right under the roof plates.
Bonus photos: Family meeting...

Volkswagen T1 panel van (black/white), double cab flatbed Transporter (blue/white) and Camper (red/white)
So, this is my 4 wide LEGO VW T1 panel van with some new gimmicks. I hope you like it.
Update October 1, 2012:
V1.1, a little update for the T1 panel van with new side windows like V3.1 of my camper van.

Great Job! I never really thought a sliding door was possible at this small scale! But you pulled it off! Thanks for posting how it's done also.

That's ok, this was my favorite of the two. The idea for the sliding door was really cool, also I like how you did the wheels, I always wondered how people did that! |

... The main reason I'm leaving this comment is for the SPECIAL DELIVERY CONTEST. This creation is entered in the contest along with another creation of yours, I would appreciate it if you remove one because you are only allowed one entry into the contest. ... OK, I removed the other model from the contest group. Sorry, I forgot that only one model is allowed and not two of them. |

This is good. The main reason I'm leaving this comment is for the SPECIAL DELIVERY CONTEST. That's great! At a first look I didn't realize the scale. Even more impressive that you managed to build this in 4w! |

Chinchilla, DeTomaso, Patrick, Marcus, Vince, Nick, and Joe: Thanks for your comments, I'm glad you like it! :-)) I'll post some more photos of the door system, soon. I just have so much work right now, that I don't have much time for LEGO. The last days before Christmas holidays are always crazy in the office :-/ |
