Greymere Tower
Phew! Finally done!
About this creation
I need to get better at coming up with names for my builds. I came up with the name 'Greymere Tower' today on the basis that this is a grey tower on a lake ('mere'). I had a sort of 16th century western European design ethic in mind when I built this, although in the end it was more a case of aesthetics over historical context (and defensibility!).

Entry is through the southwest gate house then along an internal parapet around the courtyard to the main residential tower. This opens onto the south wing, which contains the great hall. The west wing holds barracks below and the traverse to the throne room in the western tower. Servants' quarters are in the attic over the traverse and there's a magic laboratory in the garret over the throne room. It might have made more sense to build the rooftop observatory closer to this, but I've stuck it on the main tower above the master suites instead. The basement holds the armoury, kitchen, extensive stores and the entrance from the small dock at the base of the main tower. A large parapet overlooks the lake to the north.

I've probably gone a bit crazy with the large oak in the courtyard, but it was all looking a bit drab without it.

There's a fully detailed and accessible interior, although I'm most happy with the basement - which is convenient since I can't seem to take a decent photo of any of the rest of the insides.

I've been building this for far too long - a week every few months for the last couple of years. Slow going! I think I'll be sticking to smaller (and less intimidating!) builds for a little while now. This will also be my last personal build using old grey - I've finally overcome my snobbery and have started collecting new and recent sets in earnest, so future builds should be a little more colourful.

Quoting Antonio of Croatia This looks great. How did you have that much bricks?
Thanks! I went through a stage of buying a lot of old castle sets and loose pieces on eBay and BrickLink - most of which I sold last year.

Quoting Matthew Oh Spectacular work! I love the amount of detail in this amazing build! This is one of the best castle creations that I have ever seen! The roofs, with their slants are totally beast, and the name suits this castle! As I said before, SPECTACULAR! I am totally awed by this moc! STUPENDOUS WORK!
Thanks Matthew, that's an incredibly generous comment!

Quoting Chris Bramley really like this. i think you've made very good use of your BURPs as they are quite limiting, but your use of them is probably one of the best ive seen! really like the amount of detail you have put in this.
Thanks Chris - I bought a heap of them on eBay about 6 years ago and felt a need to use them! I'll be selling off all my old grey and old dark grey soon though - including some yet-to-be-built MOCs - so I'll be replacing the BURPs with dark bley slopes for some better-looking rocks in future builds.

Quoting Tasty Muffins This is a super nice castle! I like the great details on it! I think you could really improve the rock structure and make this a fabulous castle! The low level of detail on the rocks really contrast how great the castle is!
Thanks, I think your comment is spot on! Better rocks next time...

Quoting JD Snyder Wow this is excellent! It is the perfect size and design. Its not so huge that you can't show it off, and the design is very appealing to the eye. Your castle mocs are some of my favorites. The towers and water are a great addition to a great moc!
Thanks JD! Just needs a dragon perched on top... :)

Quoting I Scream Clone A really great castle, crammed with details. I find the water a little boring after all the work that has gone into the castle itself. The reeds do help somewhat, maybe it just needs tiling, or a fish jumping out somewhere, just something to liven it up a little. Still a most impressive creation, bravo.
Thanks! It's funny, the more I look at it the more the water bores me too. I just had a look at your creations - incredible! Will comment when I have more time.

Quoting Medieval Guy More details on the walls? No. The way this is done is absolutely perfect. The lines, the shape, and the different colored sections blend together perfectly to create a stunning MOC. To much more detail would make things seem overcrowded. However, I second the motions for more detail on the rocks and water, but those are easily fixed. Truly, this is a lovely castle.
Thanks very much! What a great comment!

Quoting Kayne _ The castle itself is great! I love the entire build, and the interior details are fantastic. Rockwork takes a few times to get right(at least for me it did!), so be patient. WIth the skill you exhibited on the castle, I am sure your landscape prowess will be great as well.
Thanks Kayne - I've just been looking at your work recently and I can see the awesome progress you've made since coming out of your dark age.

Awsome! You did a great job with the windows and the Interior. On the walls of the castle I'd build some more details.

Some very salient feedback there. Yes, I agree that the walls, rocks and water could do with some extra attention. This was my first build after a dark age of a couple of years, but from now on I want to pay more attention to the finer details. Thanks for the tips!

Nice work! I like the architecture; the lines are clean, but not boring. I think more detail on the water would be good, as well as some slopes on the rock, so that it's not as obvious that you're using the big rock pieces.

Very nicely done! I know that the build is on the tower, but a little more detail in the water would be great too, it looks a little bit too flat. Other then that a very good job! The photography was good as well! -LB Senior
