Aesopís Fables
- The ancient Greek storyteller told many fables with a moral lesson that could be expressed explicitly by a maxim. Choose one of his fables and recreate it as a scene or story.

Hello, come on in. Welcome my friends to this week's episode of Fables by Aesop.
Tonight I shall tell you the charming tale of the Tortoise and the Hare.

The Hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals.

"I have never yet been beaten," said he, "when I put forth my full speed. I challenge any one here to race with me."

The Tortoise said quietly, "I accept your challenge."

"That is a good joke," said the Hare; "I could dance round you all the way."

"Keep your boasting till you've won," answered the Tortoise. "Shall we race?"

So a course was fixed and a start was made.

The Hare darted almost out of sight at once...

...but soon he stopped and, to show his contempt for the Tortoise, lay down to have a nap.

The Tortoise plodded on and plodded on,

and when the Hare awoke from his nap, he saw the Tortoise just near the winning-post and could not run up in time to save the race.

Slow and steady wins the race.

And now the moc...

This was my first real attempt at creatures and non minifig scale scenes. I know now why I don't often adventure out from minifigs... my collection is only just big enough for the scale of these critters I built! This moc is the size of my whole building table. (see bonus pics at end of post)

The track is simple, race down the straight, over the bridge at the end and back down the other side to the finish line.

This tree stump is home to some very small animal or maybe an insect.

What do you think lives here? Whoever it is I'm sure he's not too happy about Hare using his house for a bed.

Mouse enjoys a relaxing afternoon fishing in the creek.

Black Bird enjoys a juicy worm.

Arrows along the track help direct the animals towards the finish line.

It is a crisp autumn day in the woods. Perfect weather for a race.

Fox sets the course and oversees the race, he makes sure nobody is cheating. Just between you and me, he is my favourite.

Hare is dreaming of carrots and fields of long grass.

Sweet dreams Hare.

Bonus pics:

Behind the scenes day one. This thing is massive! Biggest moc I've ever built.

Building up the ground and hill took the better part of two days to shape.

Ok everybody! Up out of your chairs!

Take a step to the left...

... no Mouse, the OTHER left.

Shake that tail feather!

This moc was so much fun. I loved building the cute little creatures. They were very, very tough to do and took me a long time because I've no experience with that type of sculpting, but I'm really happy with how they turned out.

Thank you to the judges, I can't say it enough you guys are just amazing. And I also thank you. Yes YOU, the viewer. To every single person who has looked at my mocs during this contest and given me your encouragement, I thank you. You are the reason I made it this far, got better with every entry and enjoyed each round more and more.

Lastly, to Jason. Wow. Your Ant and Grasshopper is sublime. I wish you the best of luck.

Wait.....you won?! WOW!!!! That is amazing! I bet you're super excited! I'm so sorry I missed the whole thing.....between work, travel, video game reviews, MOCpages being broken half the time, and my own laziness I had a tough time at the end of 2011 keeping up. I'm hoping to turn that around in 2012. Anywho, back to your lovely creation. The animals are simply amazing, but I really love the track you created. My favorite part though (and I do love the fox too) has to be the bunny ears changing throughout the story! A perfect touch of realism and detail that really moves your skills forward by leaps and bounds. Not sure how you pulled this off in only a week (or so), but I'm sure the empty wine glasses had something to do with it. ;) I feel bad for Dave.....that's gonna be a humongous shipping bill! LMFAO You'll love the tower....mine is still built! I'm extremely happy for you Leda, this is indeed a tremendous victory. Good on you!

Knowing that I made you laugh is truly the bright spot of my day! As far as Toby goes, I'm sure there are those among us who would be traumatized by such an event. However the rest of the demented fun-loving wackos (including yours truly) loitering about these parts would revel in the carnage. In fact I can picture little mousy tidbits scattered about with trasparent red bicks between them for added effect!

And now the MOC Olympics are over and you won without my vote. But you would have gotten it, though both entries are stunning. But this here is more than a simple MOC. Remember when I told you that I want to own a Harry Potter book illustrated with your MOCs? This here is even better. It's not just ABS anymore, it's ART.
Cheers Thor. Thanks heaps for your comments throughout the games. I have been playing on my favourite photo gift website the last two nights and have just finished turning this story into a photo book, as a keepsake. Now (when it is delivered) it will look like a children's book that you can actually pick up and read.

Quoting Mike Johnson Well lets try this again since my last comment never made it. I mean it wasn't that racy so I don't think it would of been blocked but oh well. Any hoot congratulations on your victory for there is no question in this hairball spewing kitty's mind that you earned it lock stock and barrel! In fact I might just steal that adorable little mousy for a potential future project I have in mind. At the very least he'd make a great toy to bat around as well as a tasty snack, meeeoooowwww!!!
Hahahaha that's priceless. You make me laugh. That mouse is all yours to bite the head off and leave on the doorstep. I was going to put a pic of my cat Toby playing/attacking that mouse in at the end of the post but was unsure if people would all die in shock and horror at the sight of the possibility of sharp little kitty teeth and claws scratching the ABS.

Well, I hope it doesn't take too long. Don't want you to have to be waiting till after new years. Actually I think I might have gotten a prize, but I'm not sure. Anyways, movies are the best way to relax and get MOC ideas in my opinion. Yep that's the same here. I hope you'll like it. It wont be too big certainly not as big as this of course, but bigger than any of my MOCs. Funny thing is that my most popular MOC is also my smallest. Ooh I can't wait to see that! That would also be fun. Well... anything that you make is fun and spectacular. Oh and congrats again, Leda!

Quoting Chris Stone Is that a mini Tortoise and Hare behind the Fox in the second pic?
Yay somebody noticed them! I never mentioned them because although the mini tortoise looks good, the hare, I must admit, does not. I initially planned to have two pics of the Fox in his burrow, the first one at the opening of the story, sitting on the chair holding the book, and the second one at the end of the story we return to the Fox and he is standing at the fireplace with the tortoise and hare ornaments on the mantelpiece.

Yes, you really should build that Tower Bridge and then relax and watch some movies while taking a breather. At least that's what I would do if I won something. Btw I have this great idea for a MOC to be building through the holidays so be looking for something BIG. Congrats yet again, Leda!
It will be a while before the Tower bridge reaches me all the way down here in New Zealand, but as to the movie watching, I hear ya there buddy! That is my plan tonight actually, I just realised when I came home from work today just how exhausted I am! I've been running on excitement and adrenalin, coffee and candy throughout these games and now its time to put on a favourite old movie and just chillax big time. Can't wait to see your big creation soon. My next step I think is some kind of Christmas special... or maybe I'll just blob a bit till New Year!

Quoting Chris Phipson Leda, first congratulations on making the finals! Ok, so I actually sat for a good hour or so pouring over the details of both mocs. Both you and Jason went with the same basic scale (which made the decision tougher) and both of you really portrayed your stories beautifully! In the end it boiled down to the "little things" that swayed my vote. Your addition of the extra characters (fox, mouse and so on) plus the things like the home/hole in the tree trunk that pulled my vote. Speaking of which, you got it! Millie, The MocOlympics is truly a test of endurance. You've given us seven wonderful builds over the last 3+ months, and put tremendous effort into each and every one. You started with a study in lighting that proved that the size of your collection has nothing to do with what you can build. The same technique was applied to the space MOC, in which you played to your strengths. The Harry Potter build brought in your ability to tell a minifigure scale story and how well you can capture action. The Mask was certainly a different take on the category, and a very personal choice and gamble that payed off in the end. The story you told in round 5, was really more of a movie and had so many wonderful details in technique and part usage. The movie poster returned you to where you started and showed what you are so good at. This round, you FINALLY stretched your comfort zone to build in a different scale. The race course was filled with wonderful and whimsical details that brought the scene to life. What I liked best however, was the expressiveness you were able to convey with the creatures, particularly the hare and the wonderful design of the fox. You have earned my vote in a category that I tried to save for the final round because of the challenges embedded in it. I was amazed at your consistency through out the competition and how much you've grown throughout the process. Thank you for helping to make this competition such a success. ~Dave

Well Leda, here you are, in the MO finals, in the spotlight, and performing like there is no tomorrow. This is one spectacular entry, rivaling all of your previous bests and putting every other entry in the MO to shame. Brava, this is my favorite of yours. Once again your superior photography plays itself brilliantly and captures the scene perfectly. The build itself was drop dead gorgeous, not to mention the refreshingly simplistic approach to this category. You and Jason are going toe-to-toe with 2 equally draw-dropping entries. The very best to ye both. -Blessings, Blake

Wow! this creation is phenomenal, I, I never saw you create characters cubic, and I must make you my compliments, I think that it was not easy, but what came out is sensational. I love the tree with red leaves yellow and orange, is a touch of class, and creates a fairytale atmosphere. The characters are wonderful, the fox, it's perfect, I love his tail, the rabbit is spectacular, with those red pants and suspenders, and the tortoise, is simply legendary. Once again, I congratulate you for having led all MocOlimpycs with evocative creations, full of surprising harmony. Congratulations, the victory belongs to you.

Quoting Giovanni & Lennaert Seynhaeve First off, Leda: I'm so happy you went out of your minifig comfort zone; fox is a brilliant piece of art, ART, I say! I love how you give various expressions to rabbit by its ears. Then the amount of detail added by mouse, the little place under the tree and your typical style of rockwork. The only thing that disturbs me is the pattern of the path; IMO it looks too much and draws away attention of your amazing animals. Amazing entry, Leda, you haven't dissapointed once in this contest. From the bottom of my AFOL heart: thank you for playing and good luck with your judges!
Thanks for your awesome praise! I agree with the path somewhat. Hare's feet disappear a few times in it and it is a bit busy. My plan (it looked good in my head) was to make it look like a woodland path, covered in dirt, stones, leaves, mulch, twigs, grass etc. It was hard to make that a reality... my mind's ideas often stretch well beyond my skill level.

Quoting Elk Guard Great work, I really like the rabbit and fox character design and the autumn tree in particular. Fantastic photography as always. It seems the build was so epic that the story was a little underdone?
Thanks for your comment. Regarding the story, I chose at the very beginning to deal with the simple retelling of the original fable. I liked how it is short and to the point. There are lots of retellings where the story is expanded and I stole some of that for the scene as a whole, eg the fox at the start line. Having seen Jason's expanded story I kinda wish maybe I had done that too because it works really well. But my intention was to let the pictures say it all.

Congrats on a great run in this contest, and I'm guessing this will be another nail biter, right to the end! Two great entries, but I feel that the layout, details, and major characters in your entry have an overall more consistent level of detail and intricacy. So you get my vote, and good luck with the rest of the judges!

First off, Leda: I'm so happy you went out of your minifig comfort zone; fox is a brilliant piece of art, ART, I say!

It has a very different, for lack of a better word, jagged look that I like a lot! I think it's the use of a lot of small pieces, but the very un-snot look is appealing! Good job!

I absolutely LOVE this moc, it is, my idea, your best work in the contest. I adore the scenery, and you did an amazing job out of your comfort zone. Thanks to you and you fantastic work I had a great time following a great competition. I wish you all the best, as Jason's entry is really great also.

Asolutely fabel...bulous! The creature design alone is fantastic but that Hare really has character due to its great posability. I think the judges are just wishing to be somewhere else.

Well done mate, I'm really pleased to see a strong and evenly contested final. I just love the fox - the tail and ears are super use of that inverted slope piece - and the hare is so full of character. A hearty congratulations on making the final, and good luck against Jason.

Beautiful work Leda. I love the scenery. The bird catching the worm and the fox are my favourite parts. Also really like the start line. Good luck Leda and Jason - you are both very worthy finalists in this fantastic contest.

Flipping fantastic! Wow! Those critters are superb! The course is brilliant and really gives the feel of art from a children story. Man this just blows my mind! I'm going to say good luck because judges can get it wrong, as the build goes you shouldn't need luck at all! ~Thoy

You slayed it. Love the whole Saturday-morning-cartoon aesthetic, and I can't stop drooling over the beautiful set and your characters; the Hare's goofy running poses put a grin on my face. Best of luck, now pardon me while I get to work on my own cartoon animals! ;-)

AWESOME, Leda! Those critters are very cute and masterfully built. I think you should venture outside of minifig-scale more often. As I looked at each panel, I kept thinking of the Loony Toons episode with Bugs against the hare. I love that this has a very cartoony feel to it. Good luck with the judges!

The earth shakes, while the Lego Gods themselves take their final gargantuan strides in a three-month long race. Both of you have through this competition produced some truly stellar builds, and I can't decide which of your final entries I like more. They are both masterworks, and testaments to the highest standards of building, story telling, and photography that MOCpages has to offer. There is just so much to love. All I can say is excellent work, and good luck with the judges!

Wow Leda, absoloutly top notch work! Your brick built animals are great, and are perfectly complimented by your landscaping. The colour combinations are fantastic, especially the autumn tree with it's carpet of leaves on the ground. :) The tree stump house is also a sweet touch, and the crazy little bridge fits in well too. So much to look at! Best of luck with the judges mate, although i reckon you've made the need for luck redundant with this beauty. :)

Oooh WOW! Everywhere you look you find something new! There are just so many fantastic details hidden around the forest! I especially like the mouse fishing and the tree surrounded in fall leaves. Those animals steal the show, though! They have so much character it looks as if they were pulled directly from a cartoon! The posing really make these characters come to life! Phenomenal work all around! Best of luck to you, Leda!

Brilliant, good luck! The animals are especially well done, and my favourite is the fox as well. The bridge is fantastic, and I like how throughout the MOC pieces aren't completely pushed down, giving it a outdoors look. The room where the fox tells the story from is incredible, and the fireplace is excellent. This is exactly why you got this far, and again, good luck!
