About this creation
A small town in Colorado in the year of 2015
Caleb opened his eyes slowly. The sun was in his eyes. He was soon aware of the ropes that bound him. He reflected back on the night before. He had been with Amy when he had been attacked. The fight was blurred, but he remembered that he'd managed to knock on of the men into the river. Good, maybe they could barter him back.
One man, who appeared to be their leader, was standing in front of him.
He was in a small camp, 9 people in all. This confirmed that the sheriff had gotten the man.
A man was using a log as target practice.
There was small, but building, fire with some men around it.
Some of them watched as their leader began to talk to him.
"Now, in a few minutes, you're gonna hafta call your friends there and arrange a trade, if you don't we'll kill ya and go back for more of yer people!" the leader said.
Caleb knew his type. He wasn't kidding.
"We need to arrange a trade of some kind!" Doc argued.
"How?" asked the sheriff,"How can we talk to em if we can't even find them? And if we could find them, wouldn't it be better just to attack them?"
"As far as I can see, there is no way to do a trade. What we've gotta do is guard the prisoner, and send out search parties. I see no other way," spoke Mr. Johnston.
"I agree," said the mayor, "Well, thanks to Caleb we even have this prisoner, otherwise he would have no chance!"
The prisoner listened, but there was nothing he could do
Outside, Amy ran toward the door.
"It's Caleb, he's on the phone!" she said as she came in.
She put it on loudspeaker and they listened.
"Hello guys. I'm fine, don't look for me though, I'm calling about a trade to be made. Their guy for me. Meet us at the ford at five PM in two days," he paused. The sheriff was aware of Amy was thinking hard, as if deciphering something.
They heard a muffled sound, a kick, then Caleb continued, "come with only five men, if not, they will not come goodbye," the phone went dead.
Amy breathed in a deep and unsteady breath, then spoke, "Caleb and I developed a simple system of communication for something like this. Almost like he knew this would happen," She paused.
"Go on," the sheriff prodded.
"There is a message within the massage we just heard." she breathed in, controlling her feelings,"It's a trap, he says not to come, no matter what."
