Combinators 2011 - space ninja team super robot prototype LDD
power rangers inspired combiner
About this creation
What on Earth are the Space Ninjas?
I've been asked that question a few times across various websites and the simple answer is... I don't know. I made up the name about a week ago (late November 2011) as a catch all, power ranger like, super robot team. My original plan was for a team of robots that combine to form a bigger robot, but the mechanics at this scale are HARD! So I compromised with this Mega Zord inspired micro mecha concept.

I've since been toying with some story ideas for the Space Ninjas, many of which are blatant Power Ranger inspired fan fictions. But to date this is the gist:

2,000 years ago the combined ninja clans of Earth banished a great and powerful evil into the abyss, from which it was prophesied that it one day it would eventually escape. Fast forward to the future, approximately 500 years from now. To prepare for the return of the great evil, the ninjas infiltrated various facets of human culture, arranging for the construction of a colony/training academy to be built in secret on a newly colonised Asteroid beyond Saturn. There they have devised an entire fleet of craft capable of assuming super robot forms. Piloted by ninjas, these robots are like a scalpel cutting away evil from the galaxy, where as the regular military are more like a bazooka.

But the prophecy is about to be fulfilled and the great evil has chosen the BioBeasts of Glorm as his instruments. When they recapture the abyss, he will rise again!

I've been toying with ideas for a super-robot combining team figure for ages, but my understanding of how to make micro-scale joints always limited the results. Even here, possibly my best effort so far, I've not quite pulled it off. But I'm getting closer to my vision.

Ok back story, these are the Space Ninja Team Fleet. Corny I know, but all the best Sentai and super-robot shows in Japan seem to have titles like that, or at least the poorly translated English versions do.

The team is made up of 5 parts (so far):

Yellow Galactic Bomber / torso
Red Hover Tank / Leg (either left or right)
Green Hover Tank / Leg (either right or left)
White Space Fighter / Arm (either left or right)
Blue Space Fighter / Arm (either right or left)

Creator notes:

I love the fact that this figure has a fair amount of posing capacity. Thanks to the double shoulder joint, the arms have a reasonable range of motion, the elbow is limited to 90 degrees, but I don't think that's too big an issue.

The legs however are a bit bulky and sadly would not really allow for much movement with the heel struts extended (as shown in the Leg Mode pictures below). When I get round to redesigning this model I'm going to try and create a more solid foot, while still having a passable alt mode.

While I'm 90% happy with how the main body turned out (a classic zizy2 inspired micro-mech basically) I'm only 50% happy with the limbs. The arms have two cute little chibi fighter modes, but are fairly limited arm modes. The Hover tanks were a compromise, to be honest I don't know WHAT they are meant to be?! Leg modes are not what I was aiming for at all.

I'm calling this a prototype because basically it's a work in progress. Finished as far as it does everything I set out to do, i.e. create a five piece super-robot in micro-scale. But there is a shopping list of changes which will need to be made before I post a version 2.

Quoting Twilight Hunter Super Special Awesome. I like it. simple and effective, works well visually, and has good potential for "auxiliry Zords" so to say. meaning parts that could replace other parts, or parts that add to other parts.
This is the original prototype version, I have since added a lot more units, and several auxiliary units.

Quoting CEO Luiz Camargo "Oh no! The moster is growing! Let's call Megazord!" ~ =)
ha! I'm working on a version 2 that might make a decent Ultra-mega-zord, for when things get sticky and they need EVEN MORE power.

Quoting arik lego oh wooow... how do you think up these things?! :P great work, Andros.
I just love experimenting with what lego can do, and I'm definitely a big big fan of micro mecha of any kind. As for where the ideas come from? Japanese animation mostly.
