The Day the Canary Died.
About this creation
MocOlympics Round 5
Leda Kat vs Gabriel Thomson

Category: The last word.
Build us a story, any story you wish but here’s the catch...
The first line of your story MUST read:
"After the canary died the mine was shut down, but that wasn't the end, only the begining."
And the last line of your story MUST read:
"And to this day, I still cry whenever I see a mocha frappuccino."
We don't care how you get from point A to point B. We don't care if it's two panels or 40, just that you have the lines make sense within the story. This category will be judged on both building AND story telling.

After the canary died the mine was shut down, but that wasn't the end, only the begining.

The deputy sheriff found him early that morning in June. He had been the high school's team mascot and the team had secured a fine win the night before.
Obviously, a drunken dare gone wrong thought the deputy... everybody knows that mine was dangerous, but kids will be kids.

This was the last straw however, red tape and bureaucracy had left the mine open with just a warning sign out front, but now a kid had died the mayor would surely come to his senses and safely board the death trap up.

I was filing papers when Jed came in with the grisly news.

"Looks like little Scotty Thomas lost his footing" said Jed with a heavy tone. "I remember that kid's christening and all. Sad day, sad day."

Jed went to contact the kid's parents and I headed to the coroner's office to confirm the deputy's story.

Having had a late night doing paperwork my head was pounding, I stopped at the diner for a coffee.

Looking radiant behind the counter stood Bella May Marcus. The love of my life, could today be the day I tell her how I feel? No, there is work to be done... tomorrow perhaps.

"Give us a brew doll face, and make it strong."

"I heard there was a tragedy up at the mine, Jim... " she handed me a strange drink... cold coffee and chocolate, crunchy sort of, like it had crushed up ice cubes in it. I nearly chucked it back in her face, but her face was just so damn pretty that I couldn't bear to do it.. so I tried the drink. Tasted good.

I answered her question with little more than a nod of confirmation and left for the coroner's office.

The drink was cold and refreshing as I wandered the street on that warm summer's morning. It cooled my insides, satisfied my sweet tooth and kick started my brain all at the same time... odd, how a taste can stir a memory...

At the morgue I looked at little Scotty Thomas with a heavy heart.

He was my nephew's friend, I'd known him since he was in kindergarten.
Sad day, sad day...

I was doing my taxes late that night when my sister knocked on my door in a panic.

"Jimmy, Peter's missing. I haven't seen him since the game last night. Jimmy, help me find him."
My nephew Peter. Scotty's friend. Abigail's words ran down my spine like ice... Peter's missing. The mine. Of course. He was in the mine.

I instructed Abigail to fetch Jed and have him meet me there, I then went on alone.

In the darkness I felt the warm air down the back of my neck even before I heard the sound of the breathing behind me. Oh to be young and fit, but alas my reactions failed me.

... Darkness.

When I came to I was deep inside the mine. I have seen many things on television and once I saw a pig do a belly flop into a pool, but never before had I seen a sight so strange...

"Bella May?" the love of my life... could it be? Was I dreaming? Bella May a witch?

"Yes Jim." her voice was suddenly unfamiliar to me. "shame about the canary, he really looked cute. But I couldn't let him poke around my den and reveal my secret before my plan could take effect. Bella May was just a ruse you see, a lure, to soften you up with my fine barista skills. My purpose here is you. You, who are the second cousin once removed on your mother's side of the president of the United States. The most powerful man in the world. You, who have been invited to his dog's birthday party next weekend. It is in your body that I will be able to posses him and take over the world!"

So she planned to posses me. I didn't understand what that meant, I'm a simple man who lives a simple life. But what about Peter? I forced out his name, a cry muffled by the gag in my mouth but still recognisable.

"Peter? Peter who?... oh, you mean...
... THIS PETER?"

My breath froze mid inhale and it was as if somebody had plunged a knife into my heart.

But at that moment Jed crashed through the tunnel, he aimed his pistol and fired.

He missed. Stupid kid. It knocked the cauldron off its balance and the liquid potion spilled over the beautiful form of Bella May Marcus.

"I'm melting! I'M MELTING!!"

I wouldn't have understood that either -we live simple lives here- but I saw it in a movie once so I knew witches melted when they got wet.

Like the plot of some corny TV show I was saved in the nick of time.

And to this day, I still cry whenever I see a mocha frappuccino.

- from the cutting room floor -

Out of all rounds in this contest this truly was my favourite. I haven't sunk my teeth into a story in such a long time and in doing this I remembered just how much fun it was. Good luck to Gabriel and all of the final 8. And huge thanks to the judges for your time and I don't envy your ever increasing difficulty in choosing the winners.

Like several others, I have neglected to comment here because I tend to pass comment in the lounge and forget. Silly Stu, never miss a chance to lavish praise. Everybody knows I love a good tale and this was a riot. A touch of twin peaks as Thor said, a dash of no country for old men, a liberal sprinkling of Tarentinoesque staging and dialogue, and a melting witch and a dead kid in a big-bird costume (as I cannot think of anything else when i see it), what more could I ask for? Superb sets, brilliant lighting (loving that morgue) well written and paced. All round great, good luck for the semis mate.

Quoting Mike Johnson Poor little Petey, now he's just a head on a brick! As for canary boy, I say we fry that birdy up and serve him for Thanksgiving Dinner. The only mournful spot was when that sweet and loving witchy woman got melted by that bumbling deputy. Oh well. Once again you prove you are the true mistess of the brick and that all unworthy souls should bow down and worship you. Or at least just me, meow!

Great story, Leda. It felt like coming back to Twin Peaks - fantastic. It's not easy to compare your MOCs for this round to Gabriel's, since those are 2 different styles. You built mainly(!) settings to create wonderful photo shoots, whereas Gabriel created whole sets and used them in many different angles to tell his story. Thus said, I shall take the liberty of not voting here. But let me assure you, your diner with all the pastell shades will always be a reference of perfect interior for me.

Quoting Gabriel Thomson Amazing Leda, just amazing! I reckon you've got me dead to rights here. The story is great and your lighting and framing is truly superb. I love your interiors so much, i was trying to channel some of your interiors mojo in my Atlantis villa but you defintely are the master here. Best of luck in round 6 mate, hope you go all the way! :)
Thanks :) It will however be a tight one for me this coming round. My opponent will have it in his favour as I'm off to the Gold Coast this weekend Thurs-Mon night, so the bulk of my building time is gone! I will have to go with the phrase "sleep is for pansies" to pull off a round 6 entry worth posting! All the best with your upcoming surgery and recovery.

Quoting MCLegoboy ! That was awesome. Exactly how does a western style time period have high school football?
Apparently you never watched Little House on the Prairie. =) American high school football has been played since the 1880's. Now, for the real reason I am here, this wonderful creation! Darling, you had me riveted from line one. Such a mix of serious ambiance and subtle, satirical humor; your play on the canary was hilarious! Your sets just get better and better too, like Gio said, the diner is pure GOLD! Congrats on making the Final Four, should be epic!~H

However, this is a truly amazing entry and worthy of a round 6 advance! Welcome to round 6! ~ Chris.

Quoting Riccardo Zangelmi Leda, this is art! What a story, and photographs, the most beautiful films Lego ever made! Your story is so incredibly fit the category assigned to you, and brilliant, and so many small environments, all so perfect in every point of view. I watch and re watch. and finally, what I can add, are my biggest compliment, I think that in this creation, you've pulled off your artistic expression, at best. It was a very long time, I could not see anything so special. Bravissima. Ps: I have to learn a lot more .. ;o)
Gosh, that compliment actually brought a tear to my eye. Thank you highly. I think you're right about my artistic expression. I am pruning and tweaking my style and influences during this contest.
